frequently as a warden of St.
,George's Anglican Church.
His wife was Rebecca, fourth
daughter of Archdeacon
Elwood, longtime rector of St.
George's.
The Holt house on North
street is believed to have been
built in 1877. Judge Holt's son,
Gedffrey, of Toronto, a
talented musician, sold it in
1929 to Andrew Erskine, and
he -to ClyddEverett. It is now
the residence of the Sisters of
St. Joseph.
The Judge also had one
daughter, -Constance Marie
(1880-1944) and a son, Philip
Terence, who died in
Goderich on January 15, 1899,
aged five years and two
months.
Judge Lewis
Henry Dickson
Lewis H. Dickson was
Judge of Huron County from
1916 to 1923. He was born at
Pakenham, near Pembroke,
in 1860, obtained his early
-education in the Pembroke
schools and later attended the
'University of Toronto. He
studied law under Judge
Thomas Deacon in . Pem-
broke, and later in the office

Judge L. H. Dickson
of Loftus E. Dancey in
Seaforth.
He became a solicitor in
1884 and was called to the Bar
in 1897. He practised in
Exeter from 1884 with Isaac
Carling, Jr., a nephew of Sir
John Carling, who built the
residence now forming part
of Exeter Hospital.
Mr. Dickson was named
Senior Huron County Judge in
1916, on the retirement of
Judge Doyle. He had pur-
chased in 1910 the large
residence on Colborne street,
Goderich, which.. in later
years was that of Stanley
Prevett. He continued to
practise in Exeter until ap-
pointed Judge, and this
purchase was only one of a
number of similar in-
vestments.
He was president of the
Huron Law Association (a
document of . that period,
shows his signature to be five
inches wide.) He was a
member of the > hoard. of
Goderich Collegiate Institute
and of the board of Alexandra
Hospital.
He was a member of
Lebanon Forest Lodge A.F.
and A.M. , Exeter, and past
District Deputy of South
Huron. He was also a
member of the Independent
Order of Foresters and of the
Orange Association. He was a
staunch Anglican, chairman
of the Forward Movement of
St. George's Church, and was
frequently on the„ executive
committee of the diocese.
Judge Dickson died sud-
denly on December 17th, 1923,
in his. office while chatting
with Crown Attorney Seager
and T.M. Best of Seaforth. He
was survived by lfls wife, the
former Janet Sparling
McDonnell of Exeter; one son
and two daughters: Albert E:;
Chicago; Mrs. Ida Morris, of
Renfrew, and Miss Dorothy
K. Dickson, Goderich, sur-
vivors of six brothers and
sisters.
Judge Dickson made
substantial bequests to the
Diocese of Huron, Huron
College, Alexandra Hospital
and Trivitt Memorial Church
in Exeter. On November 6,
1955, four stained glass
windows, portraying the Four
Evangelists, were dedicated
at Trivia Memorial in
memory of Judge Dickson
and his wife.

Norman Lewis
Judge E.N. Lewis was
Junior Judge of Huron from
1917 to 1923 and Senior Judge
from 1923 to 1931. He was born
in Goderich on June 11, 1857,
theson of Ira Lewis, for 43
years Crown Attorney for
Huron. In his early years he
sailed the Great Lakes under
Captain G.L. (Lionel) Par-
sons, and took out his 'cap-
tain's papers. When a young
barrister, he wrote Lewis'
Manual of Maritime Law.
He was mayor of Goderich
in 1903, and was Conservative
member for West Huron from
1904 to 1917. While a member
of the House of Commons, he
was champion of the Great
Lakes sailors and was
recognized as an authority on
maritime law, as a result of
which he was nicknamed
"Sailor Ned." •

He had a penchant for,
flaming -red ties, He was
ahead of his time in that, year
after year, he ,sought to in-
troduce Daylight Saving, and
he pressed for abolition of
patronage in the Civil ;Ser-
vice. The Liberal Ministry►

on February 23, 1931, on the

McIntyre died on April 14,
1974.

Thomas M. Costello
Judge Thomas M. Costello
was born at Brudenell, near
Renfrew, in 1883. He obtained
his early schooling in that
area, and then taught school
for a while. He obtained his
Bachelor of Arts degree from
the University of Ottawa,
attended Osgoode Hall, and
was called to the Bar in 1913.
He practised law in Renfrew
with Hon. Thomas McGarry,
Provincial Treasurer in the
ministry of Sir William
Hearst. He was appointed
Huron County Judge in 1931..
An outstanding athlete, he
coached Goderich youths in
baseball, and was popular as
an after-dinner, speaker. He
was a member of St. Peter's*
Roman Catholic Church and
the Knights of Collmbus. He
died as result. -of ,a.. car__.ac-
cident on October 29th, 1954,
