-the articles he handled, and
men came from adjoining
townships to bid. The
Goodings traded mostly with
Detroit.
"Identified j th,Galt from
its earitesrhistory," the Galt
Reporter recorded on May 17,
1876, "Miss Gooding, whose
funeral took place Wed-
nesday, was a resident of our
town for 30 years. . . She was
a practical Christian. She was
a teacher in the Sunday
• school of Trinity Church for
over 28 years." Reproducing
the news item, the Goderich
Signal added.: "A reference to
one who was among the first
settlers in Goderich. She was
an aunt of W.F. Gooding."
What seemed like a hot clue
turned up in a Signal personal
in 1882: "Mrs. W.F. Gooding
left for Brandon ,by the noon
train to nurse her husband,
.whose legbone was broken in
a fall from the scaffolding of a.
two-storey house in that
section. Her son Albert met
her in Winnipeg."
And in the same year:
"Misses Marion and Alice
and little brothers Clarence
and Walter left for Brandon."
The given names of these
children or some of them,
indicate that they were
children of W.F. Gooding and
Emily Marlton, mentioned a
few paragraphs earlier.
This clue was diligently
followed up, .with assistance
from the Assiniboine
Historical Society, of
Brandon. It turned up a
Gooding family originally
from England, but no con-
nection of the Goderich
ing evidently was in
' too, as we find" an
