Mr. fCamphell .lived in G`gderich from the age of two until along in his 90s, and his - statements on local history may be accepted.as accurate. "Mr. W.F. Gooding," he told the newspaper, "lived about where Mr. Bedford's residence is now (1927) and his brother, Jasper Gooding, kept store, having con- siderable dealings with the Indians, as had all the stores of the early days." For good measure • in this matter of • brothers, there is a deed dated October 19, 1832, wherein, for the, con- sideration of five pounds, the Ca=nada, Company: granted Lot 23, on the south side of West street, to William Fisher Gooding and Jasper Kemball Gooding, general merchants." Lot 23 is the second west of Wellesley, but in the original surve, by the Canada Company it was numbered 4. Gooding owned most of the lots on what is now Cobourg street, and some on Lighthouse. Finding 'Mention of a son of W.F. Goodwin.. named Edwin and also a brother Edwin may seem confusing, but a Lake Shore lot in Colborne, sold, by the Baron van Tuyll to Henry Horton in 1893 had been„,qwped previously by Edwin kuthven Gooding. GOODING WIVES . . Rev. William Proudfoot, Presbyterian missionary, provides the only mention of the Gooding women,' and this was six years after the founding of the settlement. He wrote in his diary: "Feb. 14, London; met at the Inn Mr. Gooding, a storekeeper at Goderich, together with . his wife and his brother's wife. They „gave me a warm welcome to Goderich, and every encouragement to hope that a Presbyterian Church may be formed there. Mr. Gooding offered to take me to Goderich in his sleigh on Saturday. .March 3rd. Sabbath, Mr. Reid (hotelman) gave us th•e "use of his large room to preach In. , .Dined with Mr. Gooding. There were. present Mr. Black (of Black's Point). .also Mr. Reuben, Good.- .. .Among the , signers of a petition for a grant of land was Reuben Good." Despite this auspicious beginning, no record of the Gooding name is found in the records of Knox Church. Jasper Kemball Gooding was sheriff of Huron District in 1844-45, following Henry Hyndman and before John Macdonald. He died December 29, 1869, ..and the date ought to lead .to an in- formative obituary; but it doesn't, December is missing from the Signal file, and no Turn to page ll • The -Square of another era GODERICH onyor 150th BIRTH "The Prettiest Town in From The Management and staff of Heather B Salo 108 LIGHTHOUSE ST.
