When the Goderich set-
tlement was 29 years.old, and
the town had been in-
corporated • for six, there
surrounded the new cour-
thouse on Market Square
three hotels, eight or nine
stores And a couple of
dwellings, with. two taverns
on West Street and three on
Kingston. William Swaffield,
a native of Dorsetshire, who
came to Canada in about 1852,
lived in. Woodstock for a time
and then came to Goderich,
gave to one of the newspapers
in 922 his recollections of the
tovin's business section. in
1856.
"Coming up .the harbor
hill," he related, "we would
- come to John McDonald's
house- around the bank
toward the lighthouse, for
there was a lighthouse where
G.M. Elliott's ouse is now.
Another residence in •this
vicinity was that of Thomas
Mercer Jones. He ran for
member of Huron and Bruce ,
against Coley. I am speaking
' of 1856.
"Moving up town we would r
come to Daniel,. Gordon's
cabinet shop, then on up to
George Videan's blacksmith,
shop. Near it was a • small
tinshop run by, Storey and
Davis, farther up on the same.
