PO holds
open house
on July 5
On Tuesday, July 5, in
conjunction with God•erich's
Heritage Day celebrations,
Goderich Post Office is
holding an Open House.
Ceremonies. are scheduled to
begin at 3:30 p.m. on the
lawn at the east side of the
Post Office and will feature a
tribute to Goderich Post
Office pioneers and present
staffers, speeches, a tour of
the post office and free
refreshments.
Canada Post has a history
of 141' years of continuous
service in Goderich, begin-
ning with the town's first
postmaster, E. Griffin. Since
then, 10 postmasters have
served, including the present
postmaster, Mel Farnsworth,
appointed in 1974..

HARRY M.oSHACKLETON
Harry M. Shackleton,
Goderich, died Monday, June
20 in University Hospital,
London. He was 77 years old.
He was born February 4,.
1900 in Ashfield Township to
Thomas Henry and Susanna
(K iipatrick) Shackleton.
Mr, Shackleton is a former
principal of Central School
and Victoria School in
Goderich from 1935 to 1963.
Before that, he taught in
Saskatchewan, Blyth and
Mount Forest.
He was a Flight Lieutenant
in the RCAF serving as
Control Tower Officer at
stations in Ontario, Prince
Edward Island and
Newfoundland from 1941 to
1946, and then in the Sup-
plementary Reserve from
1946 to 1957, Ile was a
member of Branch 109 Royal
Canadian Legion, Goderich.
Mr. Shackleton had served
on the Goderich Library
Bpard, he was an honorary
life member of the Goderich
Lawn Bowling Club and he
was for a long time a member
of the Menesetung Canoe
Club,
He was a member of Knox
Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife,
the former Margaret E.
Mason: two daughters, Mrs.
William J, (Madeline)
Adams, Greenville; Texas
and Mrs. Jake (Beulah)
Brown, Waterloo: one son,
Thomas, Goderich; seven
grandchildren and one great
grand daughter: and one
sister, Mrs. D.J. (May)
Matheson, Sarnia.
He was predeceased by his
first wife, Ruby Allen; two
brothers, William and Albert,
and one sister, Mrs. George
(Minnie) Feagan.
The funeral service was
Thursday, June 23 at
McCallum Funeral Home
with the Rev. G.L. Royal
officiating assisted by the
Rev. Ronald C. McCallum.
Interment was in Maitland
Cemetery. Pallbearers were
Benson Feagan, Paul Mason',
Reg Ball, Al Calder, Lorne
Connell and Hugh Beilhartz.
MRS. MARGARET ADA
WAIN
Mrs. Margaret Ada Wain,
R.R. ' 1 Bayfield, died
Tuesday, June 21 in
Alexandra Marine and
General Hospital following a
lengthy illness. She was 61.
The former Margaret Ada
Marks, she was the daughter
of Charles Tudor and
Johanna (Galbraith) Marks,
horn May 8, 1916 in Bayfield.
Following her, marriage to
John Wain, she has been a
resident of Goderich
Township.
She was a member of
Trinity Anglican Church in
Bayfield and of the Anglican
Church Women's Guild there.
Surviving besides her
husband are two daughters,
Mrs. Donald (Mary) Knight,
Sheffield and Mrs. Arthur
(Janet) McDougall,
Goderich: three sons,
Charles, R.R. 1 Bayfield;
Tudor and . Robert, both of
R.R. 2 Goderich: nine
grandchildren: one sister,
Mary Marks of Toronto: and
one brother, John Marks,
Bayfield.
The funeral service was
Friday, June 24 at McCallum
Funeral Home with the Rev,
William Bennett officiating.
Interment was 'in Bayfield
Cemetery. Pallbearers were
Charles Wallis,.Doug Wallis,.
William McIlwain, Lloyd
Sowerby, Bill Parker and Ken
Mutzelburg.
AUSTIN STURDY
Austin Sturdy, formerly of
670derich Township, died on
Friday, June 24 in Huron view
at the age of 87.
He was born in Goderich
Township on November 2?
1889 to Martha Ellen (Driver)
and George Sturdy. He
—resided in Goderich Township
all his life until going to
Huronview in April 1976.
On March 4, 1919 he
married Emma Reta Keys at
Goshen Church in Stanley
Township.,1-Le was a member
of Zion United Church at
Taylor's Corners.
He was predecased by his
wife on January 26, 1958. He is
survived by one son, Chester
of RR 2 Goderich and one
daughter, Mrs. Douglas
(Zerelda) Robinson of
Goderich; one sister, Mrs.
Thomas (Linda) Laing of
Weyburn, Saskatchewan: six
grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
The Reverend John
Oestreicher conducted the
funeral service held at Stiles
Funeral Home in Goderich on
Sunday, June 26 at 3 p.m.
Interment was in the
Maitland Cemetery.
Pallbearers wereMait
Driver, Kenny Holmes, Ben
Whitely, Jim Young, Hugh
McCabe, and Bram
Eedenburg.
Flowerbearers were Jim
and Bruce Keys, Ervin
Sillery and Cliff Sturdy.
MISS MARY GORDON
Mary Gordon died . on
Friday, June 24 at Huronview
at the age of 96.
She was born in Goderich
Township on August 14, 1880
to James and Mary Gordon.
She lived in Clinton, Shep-
pardton (Ashfield Township),
Lighthouse Street in Goderich
and she also lived in Western
Canada for a while.
She worked as a seamstress
in the garment industry. She
was a member of Knox
Presbyterian Church in
Goderich.
The Reverend Lockhart
Royal of Knox . Presbyterian
Church in Goderich, con-
ducted the funeral service at
Ball Funeral Home in Clinton
on Saturday, June 25 at 2 p.m.
Interment was in the
Clinton cemetery.
