Separate schools name top
The separate schools in
Huron and Perth counties
held their field and track
meet at the Mitchell District
High School last Tuesday.
The event was sponsored by,
the Knights of Columbus.
The various events in-
cluded numerous races and
jumps and ball throwing.
At the end of the day -long -

visits birthplace
George R. Elliott, a retired petroleum engineer„pf
Santa Monica, California, was in Goderich a few days
ago and had a look at the Hamilton Street building where
he was born 89 years ago July 9, before posing for a
picture at the Jubilee log cabin.
Second son of Mr. and Mrs. G.M. Elliott, he attended
St. Patrick's ward school, studied Latin under Principal
Strang at the Collegiate and 'emerged with a senior
,teacher's certificate,
He left Goderich for the University of Toronto 70 years
ago, and Canada for the United States nine years later.
After some years in "the employ of the Department of
the Interior at Calgary, and two years active service in
the Army Signal Corps, he took employment with
Standard Oil, and later with the Phillips Petroleum
Company, his work covering oil fields in many states.
In 1963, on retirement, he was sent by. the Unifed
Nations Technical Assistance Administration to Turkey
for one year and Yugoslavia for another. Returning in
1955, the U.N. sent him to Argentine, and his report was
the basis for construction of oil and gas pipe lines there,
He married Jane Musgrove, of Canmore, Alberta, and
they have two sons; Dr, David, with National
Aeronautics. and Space Administration, and William, a
musician and composer in New York.
In Goderich he was the guest of his brother, W.E. and
Mrs. Elliott, and his cousins, Mrs. Hurne Clutton and
Mrs. Chester Feagan. In Windsor he visited his sister,
Mrs. Fraser McTavish and her husband,
Blyth Festival
opens season
The Blyth Summer Festival
opens its 1977 season on July 1
with A Summer Burning, an
original adaptation of Harry
Boyle's novel of the same
name.
Patrons are'invited to share
in the opening celebrations
with the staff and company of
the Festival. A hot turkey
supper will he served at 6:30
p.m. in the baserhent of the
Blyth Memorial Hall at a cost
of .$4.50 a person. Reser-
vations can be made for the
dinner at the Festival box
office. Square Dancing to the
music of the Festival
musicians after the per -
formance will complete the
evening.
The second play of the
season opens on Monday,
July 4. The Blood is Strong,
which played to packed
houses last season, has been
brought back due to popular
demand. The play features
traditional Scottish melodies.
A Summer Burning and
The Blood is Strong will
alternate performances until
July 9 and will return
periodically throughout the
season. Tickets and further

Festival ticket outlet or at the
