Davy Crockett will be appearing in Goderich's
Sesquicentennial Parade next weekend. He's really Les
Arndt of Bay City, Michigan, but he's been in demand for
his impersonation of Davy Crockett since 1956 when he
entered the Michigan Veterans of Foreign Wars parade as
the lengendary Crockett. It is believed the popularity was in
part due to Arndt's great likeness to the real Crockett, plus
the fact that he did his first impersonation of Crockett as
Walt Disney's Crockett film era was in full swing.
Davy Crockett to
appear in Parade
"America's Davy
Crockett" smoke -signalled
tod-ay from across Hake
Huron that he will lead a Bay
City cont,nngent into the sister
city of Clltderich, along with
Bay City's St. Patrick's Day
Queen Jodi Frasier and her
court, for the Goderich
Sesquicentennial Jubilee 3
parade Saturday, July 9.
This representative of the
old frontier is a
newspaperman, who was the
official Davy Crockett at the
Brussels, Belgium, World's
Fair in 1958 on European
travels that also included
Paris and Hamburg, Ger-
- many, appearances:
Leslie E. (Les) Arndt, 61, a
copy editor -columnist for The
'Bay City Times in the Booth
Michigan newspaper chain,
hung up his buckskins several
years ago after more than a
decade of travels during the
Crockett heydey for
youngsters, including re -
'dedication of Fort Davy
Crockett in Northwest
Colorado in 1959.
But the hisotrical
panorama of the American
Bicentennial Grand Parade
last July 3 in Washington,
D.C., was enough to lure him
out of retirement. It should
have a Davy Crockett, and
who else but himself? The
late Moton H. Crockett, a
third cousin of the immortal
Davy, at The Alamo recep-
tion in San Antonio, Tex., in
1959 had called his likeness to
the frontiering Davy as
perfect in facial charac-
teristics, build and costume.
So he agreed to that "last
outing" in the big six -hour •
Washington Bicentennial
parade, never dreaming he
would be talked out of
retirement once more for the
Sesquicentennial parade in
Goderich. But Malcolm
Campbell and other Jubilee 3
leaders prevailed on him, and
with a warm spot in his heart
for the Goderich friends he
had met earlier this year
during Bay City's St.
Patrick's Day parade, when
he was featured in top hat and
tails as 1977 parade grand
marshall, Mr. Arndt said he'd
don the buckskins again.
Bay City expects more than
200 citizens will represent it
at the•Goderich celebrations.
Mayor John R. Willertz, other
city officials will be in
Goderich for the July 3 - 5
weekend, and American
Legion Post 18 Commander
Michael Kern says his post
and auxiliary are sending
more than 100 members,
including the women's sof-
tball team. The latter will
clash with the Goderich
Legion Branch 109 Ladies
Auxiliary team at
Agricultural Park at 4 p.m.
Sunday, July 3.
Kern said Post 18 will send
another delegation (about 20
members) to the parade
Saturday, July 9. A "sister
city friendship" bus
delegation of 46 will arrive in
Goderich about 11 a.m.
Saturday, July 9, and
headquarter at the Bedford
Hotel for the weekend. '

be others among the •visitors
who proudly acclaim
Goderich ancestry, like
"Ham" Pennell, whose
mother was born there and
whose great-grandfather
founded a grist mill, today
known as Piper Mills. Many
Bay Cityans are driving to
Goderich.
To get back to Arndt, the
frontier 'ng "Davy Crockett,"
he will have autographed
pictures for the youngsters.
He estimates he logged more
than 70,000 miles in travels
through 28 states and Canada
since that day in 1955 when he
donned buckskins and
grabbed his long rifle, Bet-
sey, for an appearance in the
Michigan Department,
Veterans of Foreign Wars,
convention in Traverse City.
He followed the trail of
Crockett through Tennessee
(the Cotton Festival in
Memphis) all the way West.
As Davy he has played such
other top American
celebrations as the New
Orleans' • Mardi Gras,
Oklahoma 1957 Semi -
Centennial Exposition,
Colorado 1959 Centennial,
Canada's Niagara Inter-
national Grape Festival in St.
Catharines, Chicago. and Fair
of 1957, Miami Lions Inter-
national Convention Parade
1958, the Holland, Mich.,
Tulip Festival, and a number
of state fairs.

Arndt says, "I've found
Alamo -hero ` Crockett a
combination of Peter Pan and
Santa Claus -- a magical
person who has brought
beauty and delight to children
of all nations."
"Kiddies are pretty much
the same no matter where
you go. I met many thousands
on European terrain, emit-
ting the same enthusiasm and
idolism as our American
moppets. In faces and
reactions, they cannot be
separated into nationalities,
races, nor creeds" he added.
In his civic endeavors,
Arndt was founder and first
president for the first
chartered People -to -People
chapter in the world in Bay
City under. the program
originated by the late
President Dwight D.
Eisenhower in 1956. He is
currently president again,
honored in the Bicentennial
year, and has led Bay City to
taking on five foreign sister
cities, including Goderich, in
building avenues to world
understanding. He also was
chairman for his city's
Bicentennial celebration and
authored a new 248 -page
county history book as a
Bicentennial memoir,
On his Davy appearances
he has been mobbed by
kiddies wanting autographs.
Did you ever hear of
another newspaperman that
popular?
Nope.
