He uses quite a number of students.' ' At any rate, she was free when be called and was glad to .accept.. The Playhouse people„no doubt, are excited about her coming and the good influence she will have on the, already high quality of production. THE ACTORS The actors and actresses have been at the Playhouse now for. several weeks. Rehearsals for Plaza Suite, the first show of the season, have begun. The lead actors for this production are Aileen Taylor Smith, James Hobson. Judith Dagley and Christopher Benson. Small has performed at the Redlight Theatre, Theatre New Brunswick and Centaur Theatre playing such roles as Blanche in a Streetcar Named Desire and Linda Lohmon in Death of a Salesman. At the Playhouse she has played Amanda in The Glass Menagerie. She is a pleasant woman who seems generally well liked at the Playhouse. Hobson, also an amiable person, is making his first appearance at the Playhouse this season. He has appeared on Broadway in Fiddler on the Roof, Most Happy Fellow and Mahagonny. Dagley, a striking blonde, perhaps recognizable to some people from her "lunchingon milk" commercials, ap- peared most recently on the Anne Murray Super Special' and King of Kensington. Her theatrical experience in- cludes Cooler Near the Lake for Second City in Chicago and The Bald Soprano, Love For Love and Lysistrada for the Chicago Repertory Company. Benson may be familiar to the Playhouse audience for his performances as Andy in Star Spangled Girl and Jack Mumberly in the Mumberly Inheritance at the Playhouse last season. He trained at the Banff School of Fine Arts and has performed at Theatre Calgary.- Manitoba Theatre Centre and The Actor's Showcase. His television work includes The Canadian West and. the CBC drama Boy on Defense. Two acting apprentices, Jeannette Lambermont and Robert Parsons will complete the cast of Plaza Suite. Both are senior students at York University School of Per- forming Arts. This season there are about. twelve equity actors_ and actresses at the Playhouse as well as several apprentices. More than half of them are new to the Playhouse. The entire company including administration and - technicians numbers around 30 people from, as O'Connor puts it, "all over." Many of the actors and actresses live in a nine room dormitory right on, the Playhouse premises during the sseason. A few live in town. The actors and actresses are, as usual, devoted people who enjoy their work, often earning less than a laborer's wage at it, Frances Hyland counts it a good year when she makes $10,500 and has said that 90 per cent of the 2,000 -odd members of tne Actors' Equity Association don't earn enough from the theatre to put them above the $7,500 national poVerty line, GRANTS The Playhouse has received three LIP grants starting with one in 1973 for creating a summer theatre, then in 1975 for building a permanent theatre and again in 1976 to use for the development of an audience. This year the Playhouse received $22,000 from the Ontario Arts Council. Local support comes from surrounding municipalities. This • support cannot be overlooked as it seems to prove how much people appreciate having live theatre right on their door- steps. O'Connor feels that the Playhouse is an essential chance for many to enjoy live theatre. The top box office price is $5.50 with lower • prices for afternoon matinees and special rates for groups. These box °Ince prices ac- count for about 40 per cent of the Playhouse's operating COM* The. Playhouse has, given rformances in 38 major itiOns.. In 1974, the • • kc, Playhouse began a touring program sharing its summer season in more than 70 one night stands with Kincardine, Owen Sound, Fergus, Seaforth, Meafard, Hanover and Sarnia. The Playhouse has had four ed4cational shows, tour more than 100 schools. In all, Playhouse producti4s have- been seen by over 100,000 people. Most of the Playhouse productions are eurrent and 'old ,,hits, popular plays • actreestecidylobekitL usually comedies and musicals which- seem to be more popular with audiences dramas. is important tb build up than audience support first," say O'Connor who maintains that the tourist crowd which makes up much of the Playhouse's audience, don't NOW THRU JULY 9th.
