I think the airport is an.asset few towns have," Wheeler said adding that the airport was almost paying for itself now. "We have to make a commitment, take the -airport and improve on it or take other options (leasing)," he said. Mayor Deb Shewfelt said that the airport's total costs to the taxpayers should be netted out. He said the airport is producing jobs and revenue and in his opinion "probably hasn't cost (the taxpayers) toodarn much." °aft. 3 THE JUBILEE 3 COMMITTEE PORT OF GODERICH ."There is a real viable operation out there now," he said. Airport committee chairman Dick Wright said he thought almost everyone on the committee hoped the airport would expand. Wheeler has called for a "cut and dried" position by -the committee on the future growth of the airport once the engineering study is done. 'A11 the committeemembers agreed that the engineering study was the most fogicaiand most important first step before making any decisions. on the airport's future growth. NO NEWS YET In other business, ,the committee was told that nothing had transpired to date regarding the two building permits which were revoked by Colborne Townshlp`Council. The permits ward revoked because It** believed that they would have an adverse' effect on the proposed new runway,, If..the i191 's.pf these building permits had been allowed La retain the permits, it was feared 'that they,, might violate an airport regulation which states that all buildings must be constructed at least 750 feet away from any runway. After airport manager Al Ball's report, committee member Wheeler asked for a More comprehensive report in the future. Committee chairman Wright agreed that more statistical knowledge was needed regarding the number of take offs and landings at the airport. Wright said that the statistics were a must because the Department of Transport had asked for them. - In order to solve the problem of recording statistics committee members recommended that a full time manager be hired at the airport and that a buildingbe erected by the gas pumps at the airport as a placewhere users of the INVITES YOU TO THEGODERICH PATRIOTIC SERVICE JULY 1ST 1977 11:00 A.M. , COURT HOUSE PARK, GODERICH ALON4 WITH° R.C.M.P - I.O.D.E. - O:P.P. - ST. ROYAL MUSIC BY GODERICH LAKETOWN BAND SINGING led. by RALPH HENDERSON A QUESTION OF DOLLARS Terry Garland, director for the Southwestern region of the. community development wing of the Ministry of Housing, said, "I agree it's a good site but it's stilla.question. of money.. He said however, that "somebody should take a stand on a case like this" and agree.d to present it for board approval at the Ontario ministry level when the time comes. He said, "the social benefits alone won't wash" but added that a case might be made for the downtown revitalization aspect. "It is a question of what ammunition we can use to have exceptions made in this case," he said referring to the committee's request for more money from the ministryl The basic stumbling blocks the committee has faced in dealing with the senior citizen housing project for the past two years are the costs in- volved and the selection and purchase of a site. The committee's latest stand is that the land covered in the West Street site option is. in- sufficient to accommodate the proposed CMHC units. Senior citizens are not rushing to get ona waiting list for the housing project until they know where it is to be built. "Once the sod is turned, we expect E#. deluge," said committee member Don Wheele + In other business, the committee's newest member, Martina Sbhneiker was appointed secretary of the committee on an interim basis. Sv• P4,WETS HE6tEE TLtATW ° tW 4ANio A11RNp1HE fr ILKIE tr. pt ANT- WON) gP•M' TO A.M.
