appeared before the Goderich
Recreation Board last
Thursday to outline plans for

jacent to GDCI.
The Huron County Board of
Board to consider
new rec office.
Goderich Recreation
Director Mike Dymond told
members of the Goderich
Recreation and Community.
Centre Board in a report that
moving the recreation
department facilities to the
arena or any other location
would make the department
less visible to the public.
The recreation board
wanted to look at ..the
possibility of establishing the
recreation office in the newly
renovated Goderich Arena
and at the board's • April
meeting Dymond was asked
to prepare a department
reorganization report.
Dymond said in his report
that the recreation depart-
ment could be located in the
arena or elesewhere and that
he was not adverse to the
move but suggested that the
present location was more
obvious to the foot traffic. He
claimed that a good per-
centage of that traffic
,through the recreation office
.would be lost through a move.
"I think that the recreation
department is more obvious
to more people at the present
location but I am,pprepared to
work anywhere." Dymond
said, "We can serve
everybody better at our
location now and we would
only serve a few well at
another location but I am
biased on the location." -
Dymond's main concern in
relocating the office ,was the
loss of visibility to tourist and
other information . seeking
traffic that he believes1Wo ld
be cut to a minimum at the
arena. He also cited the office
work of cheque signing, mail
handling, memos, and
general .contact with the town
hall would be much more
difficult and inconvenient. In
the report he said that offices
in the arena mean that people
would have to enter the arena
before entering the
recreation office and this
would promote inac-
cessibility and deter people
.from approaching the
department.
The town maintains the.
current location and main-
tainenace costs to the.
recreation board for cleaning

would men additional ex-
pense.
Dymond suggested possible
alternatives to relocating the
offices within the arena, The
first proposal was an addition
to the North-West corner of
the arena at a cost of ap-
proximately $15,000. The
transformer would have to
be relocated and a new exit
for the compressor room
would have to be installed.
This alternative would allow
people to enter the recreation
office directly from the street
rather than go through the
arena.
The second proposal was an
addition to the North-East
,corner of the arena to utilize a
portion of the existing office.
The other portion of the
existing arena office will be
used for, canteen storage and
again access to the office
would be availaibe from the
street. The board room would
have a private entrance for
public use, The cost of this
project was estimated at
$18,000.
He.also suggested that the
existing board room at the
arena could be extended to
provide the required area but
that proposal could provide
some construction dif-
ficulties.
Board member Bob Allen
suggested that if recon-
struction of the grandstand
facilities proceed within the
next year it may be possible
to build offices for the
recreation department within
the grandstand. Dymond also
suggested the possibility of
turning over the respon-
sibility of Agriculture Park to
the recreation department.
The department.
reorganization report was
tabled to the board's October
meeting.
Education allotted Meyers
use of the land for the con-
struction of a track and field
facility and he is now
proceeding with funding of
the project. '
Myers explained that the
school has already raised
$11,000 on its own and added
that ihe construction of the
syntitic track and pits
would have to be phased
depending on funds and the
granting structure available.
The project would be subject
to Wintario grafits and also
Community Centre Board
grants if ,the group in charge
of the project can obtain
designatftiv4 of the area as a
community centre area.
"We are not neccessarily
looking for money from ..this
board but we need your
sanction to build the track."
Meyers explained, "We are
going to get the project done
if we have to do it ourselves." •
The construction will follow
three phasesdepending on
Env
the granting structure of both
W intario and Community
Centres. The first phase is to
drain and tile the land with
levelling and seeding to
follow. Meyers claimed that
the students have now raised
enough money through two
walk-a-thons to drain and tile
the land. The second phase
would be the tracklayout and
construction and 'the - final
phase would be the con-
struction of a softball
