than a week, disclaim any responsibility. The asphalt shin-
gles, perhaps, but not the overhang; not the rolled roofing.
In disgust, I hang up on him in an impolite snit.
But there it is: A section of the roof needed on a new home,
a home not 10 years old.
I have saidit before and it is worth repeating: As a news-
paperman for more than 20 years, 1 was often accused of
inaccuracy and sometimes accused of a lack of profession=
alism. But ,many, of today's tradesmen and contractors in
general — one in particular — have indicated a lack of con-
cern in dealing with me.
So maybe he had no legal obligation. The portion leaking
did not come under any guarantee. But wouldn't you think
he would admit to a moral obligation? Would it not have
been fair to suggest that, since the owner of the home had
never been informed of what to do with the overhang, some
help in repairs could have been forthcoming?
Nope. Get it built. Get the money and get out.
In 10 years, we have had the side door fall right out of
its frame. It had never been anchored down, We have had
the eight -foot sliding patio doors crash into the livingroom
and break two chairs.
I shudder to 'think what might have happened if they had
fallen on a child.
And now, a leaky roofs '
To readers contemplating building a house, take it from
one with experience: Be sure you know your contractor.
Be positive that it is a reliable firm even if costs are a little
higher. If .any changes are made in the original contract,
find out what obligations you have as an owner before the
contract is complete.
Get a guarantee on your home if at all possible. It is the
biggest single investment most of us ever make. If the build-
er is confident, I can see no reason why a 10 -year guarantee
would not be reasonable to suggest.
As for our contractor, I hope his patio doors fall on him
someday while, he is worrying about his leaking roof.

..Easy does: it
Suifur in, small dose,
Sulfur is an essential part of
every plant and animal cell.'
However, it is required by
most crops in only relatively
small amounts.
For example, Michigan
State University reports that
'150 bushels of grain corn
contain only 10 pounds of total
sulfur, 40 bushels of soybeans
only four pounds and` 60
bushels of winter wheat only
five pounds of total sulfur.
It is unlikely that 'most
crops will benefit from the
application of sulfur fer-
tilizers, because their sulfur
•. requirements are amply
•supplied by many other
sources.
The Ontario Ministry of
Environment reports that an
average collection of dust
falling from.the air in south-
western Ontario contains 11
percent sulfate materials.
This provides a yearly ap-
plication ' of 18 pounds of•"
sulfur per acre - more than
enough to replace the sulfur
removed by 4 tons of alfalfa,
150 bushesl of grain corn or 60
bushels of winter wheat.
In addition, sulfur may be
added to the soil because it is
found in phosphate fertilizers
and in manure. For example,
20 tons of hog manure .con-
tains up to'54 pounds of sulfur,
Other manures contain only
slightly less:
At the present time, it is
unlikely that sulfur fertilizers
such as epsom salts, gypsum
or elemental sulfur will be
beneficial to crops in
southwestern Ontario.
