About 450 Victoria Public school children dressed in pioneer
costumes of 1827 gathered in Courthouse Park on Tuesday
Dear Editor...••••••
• from page •I
Chapman was not among
them. Thus his letter has the
credibility of a music critic
elaborately describing a
concert he did not attend.
Before the end of the
Council meeting the Signal -
Star reporter asked Coun.
Wheeler for his written notes,
"in the interest of accuracy",
and at once received those
notes containing Mr.
Wheeler's statement. We
were all there.., And the
subsequent report was
practically all direct
quotation.
The Chapman letter is all
furious shooting without
ammunition or taking aim. I
find it a most puzzling
exercise. Perhaps he .was
poorly served by his in-
formant.
I pm afraid I am much too
busy to go into details on the
spot, but Mr. Chapman's
vague references to ad-
ministrative matters of
meetings, minutes,a cost to
taxpayers etc. can be easily
checked and correctedby
contacting the Administrator,
a professional nran of
knowledge and experience.
When Mr. Wheeler and Mr.
Chapman °repeat, with
solemn emphasis, ex-
pressions such as "unac-
ceptable behaviour" of Coun.
Haydon, one would think that
the least I did was to dance
the can -can on the Council
table! The commotion
created by my leaving a
Council meeting about ten
minutes early, admittedly in
protest, is out of sensible
proportion and becomes
really funny.
Relax, gentlemen. I do
take the office of Council
most seriously, more so than
myself. Usually it is the
dignity and importance of
this institution I have in mind
whenever I get myself "into
trouble" by asking questions

some may wish to avoid or
taking steps_ to simply point
out situations which should be
more closely and openly
examined in public interest.
The episode is over and I
have no hard feelings. I have
no doubt that Coun. Wheeler
acted in good faith and out of
noble motives. But that
proves exactly the point I am
always making - the
municipal council members
are equal but different. They
are not subject to limp
assimilation by party politics,
caucus limitations or- the
dictatorship of group men-
tality. They are individuals in
their ow,n right; acting within
the framework of Statutes
they are answerable only, to
those who elect them.
I do not say it with
belligerence, but matter-of-
factly: I am not about to give
- up the freedom` and
responsibility of my ex-
pression of individuality. If
all Council members had to
echo one voice and imitate
one style, there need not be
nine of us. Tf,anyone attacked
Coun. Wheeler's rights as
individual councillor I would
be right there to defend him.
See you at the Jubilee 3
activities when we celebrate
what binds us as well as what
makes us different.
Sincerely,
Elsa Haydon
Diary opened
Dear Friends,
My uncle, Frederick M.
Thomson, is planning to
participate. in some of the
activities attendant with your
]50th celebration. He will be
to sing and celebrate Jubilee 3. Afterwards they marched
back to the school for birthday cake. (staff photo)
attending in the company of
Dr. William K. Thomson and
his wife Maxine of Ottawa,
being in Goderich about July
3or4 I
That will let Ju know how I
happened to hear of your
celebration; How I wish
others of the rest of our
family could participate!
My request has to do with
past history. I have my great-
grandfather's diaries. The
start of one section is "Diary
- of Trip to Dakota", and
states:
Left G on Thursday mor-
ning at - after a sorrowful
parting with almost life long
friends. The party leaving G
consisted of myself daughter
and son Herbert, Mr. and
Mrs. Halcrow and family.
Mr.4 13. Wilson, wife and
family, R.R. Thompson wife,
child. niece and father F.
Davis, R. Jameson, Frank
,, Hick. Ab Cox, two sons of
Wm. Arthur Wallace and
Frank Louis Bull, John
Pharis and sister, Mrs,
Trundby and two Miss
Tweedles and two grand-
children. A Gordon G. Butler,
David Van Altenboy, G.N,
Parker and fathep, in all 36,
with three car load of horses,
oxen, cows,furniture, etc.
The Thursday mentioned
was March 17, 1881 (the
writing giving the date was
added later, and even that
isn't the 17 for sure but could
be read as 11).
Would there be tiny
possibility -at all that there
would be a newspaper article
in the Goderich paper of that
time, listing,,those departing?
The list above is not com-
pletely legible, and having
been written with an indelible
hili
ah
pencil, has run slightly where
dampness occurred.
I would appreciate having
you turn this letter over to
your local newspaper,
,historicalsociety, or
genealogical society, or
whoever might be able to
furnish a , photo copy of a
newspaper clipping of such a
group leaving Goderich in.
March of 1881. Will be glad to
pay for such a copy
My home area has always
been North Dakota-, l'atherle the•
Thomsons settled. My mother
was Edna May Thomson,
oldest child of Herbert
mentioned in the diary.. I,
moved to California in March
of this year. Do- hope your
celebration is a grand and
glorious success.
Very truly yours,
Edna Ray Hinman
