MR. AND MRS.DWAYNE EDWARD LINNER
Tree planting honors
former area man
Arbour Day for S.S. no 2,
Kingsbridge, included the
fourth annual Tree Planting
Ceremony, a memorial
tribute to the late Joseph P.
Griffin and his wife, .the
former Bridget Mary Lennon,
of Pickering, Ontario.
Principal, Dave Zyluk, led
the Grade 1 and 2 students in
the singing of 0 Canada and
the Arbour Day Song. Poems
on trees were composed and
recited by Marie Dalton and
Teresa Foran. Father Ed
Dentinger, C.R., gave the
blessing which was followed
by the raising of the flag.
The black walnut tree was
given by Mrs. Jack Kinney in
grateful memory of her
grandparents.
Mr. Joseph P. Griffin was
born in Kingsbridge, a
grandson of the late Morgan
King, one of the first eight
settlers to come to the area.
He served on the Ashfield
Council as Deputy Reeve in
1883 and Reeve from 1884-1894
and was a Warden of Huron
County. Moving to Goderich
in 1885, he served as gaoler of
what is now the Huron
Historic Gaol for 24 years.
The residence was built in
1900.
In the May 15, 1903 issue of
the Signal Star, the following
quote is found. "The jail park
is a credit to the town and in a
few years will be one of the
pleasantest spots in town. The
diversity of trees planted will
in the distant future be a
witness to the judgement of
the planter Gooier Griffin and
his knowledge of tree
culture." Many of these trees
still stand.
Mrs. Griffin taught in the
parish school from 1872-1894
and was the first organist of
the St. Joseph Church.
Mrs. Kinney spoke briefly
on parish history and the
students then enjoyed
refreshments.
