The nature of God
The article "Understanding
the, character of ;. God'
published May 6, includes a
'quotation' from
Deuteronomy 6:4 "Hear, 0
Israel, Hehovah our Gods
(Elohenu) is Jehovah a' unity
(Echad)". In the American
Standard version this text
reads: "Hear, 0 Israel:
Jehovah our God is one
Jehovah." Being interested in
"Proving all things" (I
Thessalonians 5:21), I have
examined, with the help of
Strong's Exhaustive Con-
cordance, the Hebrew used
here..
And what did I find?:
Hebrew is a very exact
language, using 17 different
Hebrew expressions to in-
dicate "one". The expression
used at Deut. 6:4 is not
"Echad" but "Iysh". While
"Schad" does indicate a
unity, "Iysh" is described by
Dr. Strong: "Iysh - eesh: a
man as an individual as a
male person".
Therefore, what Moses was
indicating at Deut. 6:4 is not,
as the writer of the article
would indicate "the plurality
of the Godhead (Elohenu)
and yet equality of its unity",
but that Jehovah is an IN-
DIVIDUAL as a male person.
Furthermore, I found that
no such expression as
"Elohenu" is used there here,
but the word "Elohiym", of
which is said: "F.,LOHIYM
el-o-heem : gods in the or-
dinary sense, but spec
(ifically) used in the plural
thus, esp (ecially) with the
art (icle), of the supreme
God..,.as a superlative."
How apt are the words
recorded by Paul in 2
Timothy 2:15: re "rightly
divided the Word of truth".
Sincerely yours
C.F. Barney
