WANTED COUNCIL INPUT
"I am afraid I will oppose this motion,"
Councillor Elsa Haydon told council Monday
evening, She argued that town council should
rule on what expansion should take place at the
airport and that there should be "some 'logical
sequence" of development there. •
' Councillor Dave• Gower said he objected to
council setting out airport programs, but added
that he would "respect any directive this council
• make to the airport. corn inittee."
Councillor Don Wheeler of the airport com-
mittee admitted it was "unfortunate that in the
pasta package•wasn't put together."
Wheeler also urged council to "stand behind
Colborne Township". He said it would not be an
expensive battle, even if legal action were taken,
'although it might be a prolonged affair.
"Stand behind them. stand beside them, but' in
front of them?" said Councillor Stan Profit.
"Pay all the legal fees?"
Councillor Bob Allen said he thought council
was forgetting the airport belonged to the town,
he said there was a considerable investment of
municipal funds at the airport which needed to
be protected.
"We're fortunate to have Colborne standing
behind us," said Allen.
Councillor Haydon asked if council was going
to be asked its opiniori regarding development at
the airport. Mayor Deb Shewfelt that "hard,
fast, concrete plans were put, concrete plans
were put forth in a democratic process". He said
all the airport program had been laid out in
committee minutes since the airport was taken
over, and reminded Councillor Haydon those
minutes had been presented to council.
"I feel that somewhere along the line we've
been let down by the consultants," said Mayor
Shewfelt.
Deputy -reeve Eileen Palmer said she could not.
vote in favor of the motion to pay Colborne's
legal expenses in this matter.
"I'm very much afraid we'll be left up the
creek. without a paddle," said Palmer, "We're
talking about unknown quantities of money . I'd
like to know how much money we're talking,
This sounds like and open-ended ditch."
Reeve Bill Clifford said that depending on the
extent of the action taken, the maximum cost
should not exceed $1500.
"That's the range we seem to Yte in on it," said
Clifford.
Councillor John Doherty said it seemed like a
"very minimal amount of money to protect an
investment of $250,000". -
The next airport committee meeting is June 22
at 8:30 p.m. in the town hall.
Due to lack of space, Town Council Briefs
will be published next week
