In other 4 business, the
committee passed a motion -to
appoint Martina Scluteiker as
a new committee member le
replace Johnden— :
A motion was, also passed to
prepare a report on, the
Ontario Home Renewal
program. It was felt that this
prpgram, which prOvides
funds for the purpose of
rehabilitating old houses, was
not being used as well as it
should be.
MORE LAND
• NECESSARY
Building a two-storey
development downtown
means that a larger amount
of land will be required. The
town has an option on a parcel
of land on West Street that
would hold most of the
development, but another
three lots facing Lighthouse
Street would have to be
purchased to hold the entire
project.
The committee passed a
motion to renegotiate with the
real estate company owning
the land and to obtain options
on the three additional lots. •
The committee went on to
pass another motion to send
two members to Kitchener to

congregations. The first
Lutheran churches in Canada
'began in the Maritimes. The
earliest Lutheran church is
situated in Morrisburg in the
Upper Canada Village area.
PRESIDENT TO SPEAK'
Next year Will mark the
100th anniversary of the
Ontario district of Lutheran
churches as an organized
district. Dr. Albin Stanfel,
president • of the Ontario
district will be present for the
,dedication of Berea -by -the -
Water on June 12. He will
in„af.,,,agernoon service.
k.3 „The otheitispeaker will be
the Reverend WilljainGatz of
Mississauga, formerly a
Lutheran pastor at Dash-
• wood.
„The Lutheran pioneers of
Ontario were almost ex -
and Tom Lovett',
elusively of German an-
cestry. • They left their
homeland due to over-
population, frequent wars,
heavy taxation, compulsory
military service and religious
persecution.
Lutherans believe that the
Bible has the only solution for
our troubled times. Today
they make large use of all
modern means of com-
munication to get their
• message across. Perhaps one
of their best known means is
via the television program
entitled This I'S The Life. It
was first introduced in 1952
and is now one of the most
widely televised religious
programs in the world. It
presents Gospel centred
messages through modern
parables, dramatic • stories
each 30 minutes in length.
Locally, the television
program is not available at
the present time but the
Lutheran ,Hour radio
program is heard weekly on
Sunday mornings over CKNX
Wingham.
So, while the Lutheran
congregation may still be
relatively new and small in-
Goderich, it is also a healthy
'and di -riving one and Berea -
by -the -Water will be hard to
overlook.

dland.

Cattell, Margaret Moriyama
and Margaret Scott.

former film producer - the
Rev. Anson Moorhouse now
retired from Berkeley Studios
to Florence, Ontario. The
President -Elect is Mrs. Anne
Egilsson of Port Lambton.
She is the first lay person and
the first woman president of
the London Conference.
Resolutions passed by the
Conference included:
A thorough study of
marketing boards should be
undertaken as well as
"twinning" of rural and
urban churches to help uri:
derstanding".
That agricultural land
should be maintained for
agricultural use;
That lotteries are opposed
as well as widening drinking
facilities at sports events;
That there be continued
support for the, rights of the
native peoples in the North.
The Rev. Clarke
MacDonald, the Head Office
representative said that if
people failed in this support of
the natives, the church will
have lost all its credibility for
years. -
