BY JOANNE WALTERS
The first Lutheran church
service in Goderich was held
inthe.. chapel of Knox
Presbyterian Church in
February of 1972. ' The
congregation consisted of 25
ieople.
Now, five years later, the
congregation has grown to 78
people including baptized
babies and the Lutherans
have their very own church
building on Gibbons Street at
Suncoast Drive.
The Lutheran religion is
here to stay in Goderich.
The Reverend Marvin L.
Barz says the new church
building, which was just
recently completed, is im-
portant to both him and his
congregation.
"It tells the coMmunity
that we're here to serve on a
permanent basis; it provides
a place where we'll probably
feel more at home in our
worshjp; and it makes it
possible to expand our
program and plan definite,
fuller activities,"
The church building has
been named Berea -by -the -
Water keeping in mind both a
Bible passage and the idea of
being situated in Goderich on
Lake Huron. The tranquil
sounding name was decided
upon as far back as Sep-
tember 1974 after Mr. Barz's
son Jon did a study of the.
names of other Lutheran
churches in Canada.
Construction first began on
the building on October 12,
1976 and despite a severe
winter, it was officially
completed at the end of May
this year. It wil be formally
dedicated to God on Sunday
June 12 and will become one
of the 112 Lutheran churches
in the Ontario district.
The congregation in
Goderich raised about $7,000
for their new building and the
Ontario district of the
Lutheran churches paidthe
rest.
The building consists of a
main worship area of about 60
feet by 40 feet. The education
or Sunday school wing is
about 30 feet by 60 feet. It will
be partitioned intq
classrooms.
There is also a kitchen, a
minister's study and a board
room. A large, colorful
banner reading "...And they
studied the scriptures
daily..." hangs behind the
pulpit in the worship area
where services will be con-
ducted every Sunday at 10:30

John's, Michigan. The
minister says -in many ways
the rural areas here and those
in St. John's are similar.
The ,Barz's oldest son, Dan,
is married and teaches in a
Lutheran school in
Springfield, Illinois. The
Lutheran church maintains a
large number of these schools
and colleges in addition to its
Sunday schools because it
believes that children should
learn religion in connection
with all other subjects.
Pastor Barz says there are
three or four of these schools
in Western Canada but none
in Ontario.
Mark and Tim Barz are
following in their father's
footsteps. Both are attending
Concordia College in Ann
Arbor, Michigan preparing
for the ministry.
Becky and Jon Barz are
students at G.D.C.I. Joanna
and Debbie Barz attend
Robertson Public school.
CHRIST CENTRED
The Lutheran religious
philosophy, says Pastor Barz,
centres in the message of
Christ as the way people are
provided with God's gift of
eternal life.
"When we can focus and
have assurance of where we
are going to spend eternity, it
gives us a basis of how we're
going to live in the here and
now," he says.
Pastor Barz says he
remembers reading the
words of a professional
football player who put this
Philosophy in the language of
football by saying, "If you
didn't know where the goal
posts were, it would be hard
to play the game."
Because the Lutheran
church in Goderich is quite
small, it may surprise some
people , to 'mom( that world
wide, the Lutheran church is
the largast Protestant
denomination vvith more than
83 million baptized members.
The Lutheran church is
strongest in Germany and
Scandinavian countries.

LEARN TO CONSERVE
These days, a lot of people
are talking about energy and
energy-saving - so much so
that some people admit they
no longer think about what
they will cook and eat tonight.
Their first consideration is
how they will cook it. Then
they choose the food. Food
specialists at the Ontario
Food Council, Ministry of
Agriculture and Food, en-
courage you to join in and
think this way.
Plan menus so that if ihe
oven is to be used, it can be
used to cook the whole meal.
Select recipes that will cook
at the same temperature. For
example, you could start the
fruit pie baking at 425 degrees
reduce the temperature to 350
degrees F (180 degrees C),
pop the potatoes in to bake,
add the breaded pork chops
or casserole, and while
everything cooks - make a
salad. The meal will be
ready, the kitchen tidy! Oh,
„it's a good night to heat the
buns . . . the oven is being
used.
Try to cook as many things
together as you can.
