AL
CHERNY
el
• Al Cherny was born in Medicine Hat, Alta., of parents, who came to
Canada from a village near Tarnopol in the Ukraine. While in high
school he studied classical violin, taking private lessons from a
dedicated teacher named Frank Novak. As Al says: "We were for-
tunate to have Mr. Novak at the time we did in Medicine Hat. He
taught me for four years and selected Me afid some of his other pupils
to play in a small symphony orchestra. We learned the fundamentals
of musicianship from him. 1 felt good playing the second violin in such
places as the Empress -Theatre end the United Church, wearing rented
. white tie and tails. We did many'concerts and I played solos at them."
In 1953,, Al moved to Wingham, Ont., and played over station CKNX,
the hotbed of country music in Southern Ontario. Here, he met Tommy

Hunter, Gordie Tapp, and many others who, like him, were strugg ng
to make a living in the country music field. Al played shows and
dances throughout Southern Ontario, in such places as Durham,
Hanover, Chesley, Owen Sound, Kincardine, and knows that part of
the country like the back of his violin. During this time, he received an
• offer from Cliff Mackay to play on CBC television in Toronto, but
thought he wasn't quite ready for network television. ,
In the early '60s, he got an offer to play on CBC -TV's Country
Hoedown series with Tommy Hunter, Gordie Tapp, the Hames Sisters
and Tommy Common. When Tommy Hunter was given his own show,
Al went with him and has been a regular on The Tommy Hunter Show
each Friday night on CBC television since.
In the interim, Al competed at the Old Tyme Fiddlers Contest in
Shelburne, Ont., where he won the open and novelty classes two years
in a row. He's the only Canadian to do so and regrets that the contest
rules were changed so that a competitor cannot win both classes
during the same contest.
Ukrainians love music and Al never forgets it. He always thinks of
them when he plays a concert and manages to include a few rousing
polkas or sad and haunting ballads in his concert repertoire.
