He believes that the prOvincial riding of Haron: Bruce can be best represented in ,the Ontario legislature by a Progressive Conservative who is part of the next provincial govern- ment after the June 9 elec- tion. He also knows that one of his opponents in the coming election will be difficult to defeat. Murray Gaunt. The Liberal MPP who has held the riding for 15 years is - -- -considered in many circles as i'• unbeatable. But Sam MacGregor, the PC candidate, has not ac- cepted that, Mr. MacGregor, an energetic self-made businessman has been con- ducting a gruelling earn- paign. He has been putting 12, 14 and 16 hour days into his campaign in efforts to meet the people of Huron -Bruce and give them his message: the riding needs a vigorous Progressive Conservative MPP to sit with, the government. In his major policy statement Mr, MacGregor said: "1 aril seeking office in the 'legislative assembly for the Province .of Ontario because 1 believe that my experience is sufficient to help in the development of our riding. , We all must participate to see the critical times ahead are made less troublesome for the future generations in our province." Mr. Macgregor isn't referring to political ex- perience. He said he has none, during an interview with The KincardineNews. "I believe our province has been represented, as our nation has been represented with a sufficient number of politicians." Mr. MacGregor said he believes that the province has an insufficient number of concerned businegsmen representing it and considers politics to be the biggest business of all. .He said the nation's resources allowed him to become a successful businessman but these resources are now becoming seriously depleted. To find ways of keeping society successful, the province and the country need more businessmen to enter politics. In his'policy statement, Mr. MacGregor asked con- stituents to compare leaders of Ontario's three main political parties. How does he compare them? Obviously, Mr. MacGregor believes Premier William Davis is the best leader. The premier has "talent, energy and a realistic com- mitment." Stephen Lewis is "a wide- eyed ideologist", according to Mr. MacGregor. "I don't the riding. The major concers of the riding of Huron -Bruce in my opinion are far too important not to be con- tinuously monitored and regularly corrected." One of the "major con- cerns' is agriculture. Western Ontario, represented by Liberals, including Me Gaunt, is a major agricultural area in the province. Consumers from urban areas are represented by the party in power, Mr. MacGregor said, and the concerns of the consumers are expressed in the highest circles of government. Opposition members cannot get the support from the ruling party when expressing their concerns about agriculture. A Conservative representing a rural area sueh as Huron -Bruce would have the ear of the govern- ment, Mr. MacGregor assumed of course that the Conservatives would be returned to power June 9. Mr. MacGregor was asked for specific instances about his statement concerning opposition critics but stuck to his general statement. He said in his policy statement.that farmers must be, guaranteed "a fair return on their investment dollar and a fair compensation for their tvork." How would he make this guarantee? There would have to be enoUgh voices on the side -of the government who un- derstand the needs of far- mers, he said, adding, that Ife understands these needs. These voices would insure that proper legislation would be passed by the house without intervention in the free enterprise system. "The farmer today is so busy trying to work. his land, feed his beef, his hogs, his poultry and maintain his dairy herd, so busy fighting ttr survive that he doesn't have time to d anytihing but duck the banker". But the efficiency of a farmer would make an in- „ dustrial or commercial businessman stand up and pay attention, Mr. MacGregor said. Right now, farmers are at the mercy of the food chain. They have to accept the prices offered for their products. Supermarkets use their products for loss leaders and force down prices, he said. Mr. MacGregor said he believes that the Bruce Nublear Power DeVelopment will bring "agricultural and industrial gains" to Huron-' Bruce. He was asked what these gains ,would be. He answered by explaining the economics , of energy in today's terms. BINPD will produce 6,000 megawatts of electricity ata capital cost of $5 billion. The know what you could say loss of energy transmitting about Stuart Smith", that electricity to far away "I'd like people to assess urban areas will be about the abilities of each leader 1,500 megawatts which is a * honestly." . capital cost of $1.25 billion. 0 "I think leadership is a big . - Resources such as farm " issue. A main issue.",,„ products could be more Mr. MacGregor's opponent economically processed close Murray Gaunt, is the Liberal to the. source of energy, he party's energy critic in the said, - legislature. Mr. MacGregor When industries compare said in his policy statement the costs of transporting that opposition critics "lose good S to present urban areas their effectiveness , and to the costs of energy in those become content to look after urban areas they will .realize only p part of the concerns of (continued on page 7A) -LIMITED 1, ALBERT ST.,-CLINTON he once ovei tlz Lusky, one of thIrty.
