Five teams played in the t. Goderich lost their final game to Clinton, 2 - first BY RONNIE VARGA Howdy:do, folks! Hope your holiday weekend was a happy and carefree one. Goderich Uniteds' was 'busy, dizzy and fizzy!! Our first Annual Tournament turned out to be quite suc- cessful. The teams were friendly and played some good soccer. Throughout the day from 10 a.m. until mid- night, there was plenty of action going on! The gals from the club ran the kitchen and the bar, and they was "wunnerful" ! They were on their feet fetchin' and runnin' and they looked like a pack of ballerinas gone bananas! The very capable and good-natured Johanne Gottschalk headed up the kitchen staff; if they didn't toe the line, they were punished by being prevented from eating any of the "goodies" they were ser- ving!!! er- ving!!! ( (Oh, she's a vicious slave-driver!!), _This area was popular throughout the entire tournament. The food went down well with everyone;. so congratulations to Jo for a well-prepared menu and tasty, hearty "cuisine". (there's my 'class' GODE RICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, MAY 26,1#77,—PAGE 1; United tournumentI O comin' through again!) The girls in the bar weren't so slave -driven as Johanne's girls! Things seemed more relaxed in there and business was steady. (sometimes we even served a custotner or two! !) But seriously, folks... things went like clockwork both inside and outside. • Our thanks to everyone who gave a helping hand (or two) and to all those who par- ticipated in the games. Thanks also, to the fans, who attended. For a first try at 'this, sort of thing; we, didn't fare too badly and we ap- preciate this fact. I didn't get one spare moment to get outside (Johanne again!) and catch a game, but from alt reports, the action was hot n' heavy! United won their first game 2-0 against St. Mary's. Lee Arbour and Tony Mennen scored these beauts! ! Our second game against the German -Canadians was a bust. We lost 2-1 but I hear it was pretty suspenseful. It was a tie until the very end when the opposition scored against us. Good try, United! (It's tacky to win your own tournament any ways(! ) The Overall winners of the day's proceedings was St. Columban. They were pitted first against Clinton and won 2-1. Next, they played the London Lions and topped them 2-1. Their final game was with the German - Canadians and the outcome was to their favour. The trophies were provided by Labatt's and they were very generous in choosing. I'm certain St. Columban is a very proud and happy team and well -deserving of this honour. The Tournament com- mittee should receive a pat on the back for their continuous work throughout the year to get this "baby" successfully launched ! Thanks to Stan Profit, Mer,v Witter, Bev Doll and Evert:_Middel. Ya done • good, gang!! This Sunday we have two home games. One at 4 p.n,. and another at 6 p.m. If you can't make both,.try for one, okay? After all, what's a sport without fans?
