Effective Speaking Contest
held at the Peterborough
Collegiate ,and Vocational
School in Peterborough on
Saturday, May 7th.
Mr. Guy Gibbons of Owen
Sound was the chairman for New phone
the program beginning at 12
o'clock noon. There were 42
contestants, 20 years of age
and under in •the following
four groups, English Girls,
English Boys, French Girls
and French Boys; they
represented the 18 Lions club
districts in Ontario ds well as
those Lions districts from
Quebec and Labrador.
.There winners were picked
from eachgroup to compete
against each other for first,
second and third prizes;'
leaving 12 contestants to
speak again in the evening
following the banquet.
The banquet was held in the
Lions Club Hall and enjoyed
by over 300 people. Alderman
Ed Curtin (representing
Mayor Cameron Wasson)
brought greetings from
Peterborough.
Winners in the English girls
competitions were, Ingrid
MacDonald of Toronto a
Grade 13 student, Marianne
Payne of Guelph speaking on
'The Sixties' , and Janice
Knapp of Brighton speaking
on "Being Distinct and
Determined.'

Senior Handball is the
major event at the inter
mural level at St. Joseph's
school, Kingsbridge. First
round winners in the boys'
competitions are: Ronnie
Austin, Brian Drennan, Tom
Franken, Floyd Courtney,
Tom Forakn, Michael Frayne,
Dean Doherty, Rae Forgett,
and Steven Frayne.
In the girls' competitions
first round winners were:
Joanne Crawford, Donna
VanOsch, Jean Vogt,Sharon

Stratford Music Festival with
their students and it is to be

On Monday, May 2nd, St.
Joseph's school, Kingsbridge
Senior Boys entertained
Brookside school to a game of
soccer. Tom Poran opened
the scoring for the
Kingsbridge team' but
Brookside equalized the score
on a penalty shot. The game
was close and ended in a 1-1
tie. To break the tie each
school took penalty shots, five
for each school. Brookside hit
the bar three 'times but

Arthur Maloney, Q.C„ the
Ombudsman of Ontario,
announces that at 8:00 a.m.
on August 22, a completely
new Centrex telephone
system will become
operational in the Office of
the Ombudsman, to provide
significantly ', improved
telephone service to both the
public calling the Office, and
to staff at four locations,
Mr. Maloney said the public
will have direct access by
telephone to any staff
member without having to go
through the switchboard,
which has proved to be the
bottleneck in the existing
system.
"We realize that due to the
increased volume of cases
over the past six months, the
number of calls has grown to
a point where the existing
telephone equipment often
failed," Mr. Maloney added,
"and we regret any in-
convenience caused to the
public on this account." .
Under the new system,
those who call the general
information number (869-
4000) may be transferred to
any Directorate at 65 Queen
Street West after their par-
ticular needs have been
ascertained. Such calls can
also be transferred to the
MacKenzie and Mr. and Mrs. North Pickering . Hearings
Office on Consumers' Road in

Goderich Tournament to be
played in Goderich- on
Saturday, May 7th.
The Senior and Junior boys
and girls soccer teams of St.
Joseph's school, Kingsbridge
were bused to Goderich on
Saturday, May 7th to take
part in an inter -school Soccer
Tournament, The Senior
boys' games were played at
the Agricultural Park the
Senior girls' games at
Robertson Memorial School
and both Junior Boys and
Girls games were played at
St. Mary's school.
Congratulations to the
Junior and Senior Girls'
Soccer teams of St. Joseph's
Kingsbridge who were
champions and to the Senior
Boys of Kingsbridge who
were defeated by Holmesville
in the final game to win the
runners' up penant. The
Kingsbridge Junior Boys
placed 4th. Teams taking part
were from Holmesville, St.
Mary's Goderich:.;Robertson
Memorial, and Kingsbridge.
