T1'IE OLDEST MASON.
The Mel and Empire ,recently* re-
por! ted the death of Thomas Jefferson
Winship of Montreal at the age of 82,
reel the claim. «vas ,made thathe was
prior to hide dearth the oldest Mason
Le Canada, beg a member of the Or-
der for nearly siXty years. The St.
!Marys Journal -Argus states that this
is ari, ything but correct as Mr. H. F.
Sharp of St. Marys, in his 84th year,
has been. a lfason for 62 years.
The Advocate wishes to state that in
Exeter we hav one who has been a
Mason for 62 years, and is in: his 84th
year. We rerer to Mr. .elichael. Eac-
rett, who was made a Mason in 1959,
at \Cythevalle, Virginia, United States,
He atfiliated with Lebanon Forest
Lodge, Exeter, elarch 10th, 1861, and
in 1865 he was Worshipful Master of
the Lodge. From that time to the
present he 'has been very .active in
Masanirc: work, and what is most re-
markable is that although totally blind
for thirteen years he es able to give.
all the ,work of all three degrees, as
well as the whole of the Installation
ceremony word perfect. The latter
ceremony he ;learned from dictation
four years ago and retains it perfectly,
He ."posts' praci'ticaliy all the candid-
ates of th's lodges. Mr. Eacrett in all
these years has seldon missed a meet-
ing, and in the old days used to walk
to Stratford to get the work, some
thirty miles. It will thus be seen that
it is only a matter sof months as to
which, Mr. Sharp or Mr. Eacrett, is
the oldest Masan; in Canada.
