RF:N',RALPH KING North Street United Church WORSHIP AND LIFE? Read John 12. 1-8 It is the nature of a great love to express itself in unexpected ways. Mary loved her Lord deeply. She came into the room where the guests were reclining at the table and poured the entire contents of a hux of expensive spikenard on Jesus' feet: and with it she brought the devotion of her heart. What a beautiful act of worship! For this is worship - to bring ones treasure, one's affection, the best that one has and is, as an offering to the Christ. The record tells us that the house was filled with the odor of the ointment, and through the centuries the fragrance of Mary's deed has been wafted into evey part of the Christian fellowship, in- spiring the devotion of many another since that day, Certainly, this should have been no occasion for dispute, and yet a dispute there was. It was Judas who objected, "Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and •given to the poor?" Whether or not he was really interested in helping the poor is another question. But it was certain that he was 'disparaging worship in the interest of practical duties. To his mind (if he was sincere in what he said) it was much more important to feed the poor than to express devotion for the person of Jesus Christ. And perhaps, on first thought, we tend to agree with Judas - especially as we think of the many instances of Jesus' own concern for the sick, the outcast and the poor. But .1 esus commended Mary's act, and in so doing offered a stinging rebuke to Judas' object ion. And we need to understand that Jesus was not expressing a lack of compassion for the needy. What he was trying to un- derscore is the primacy of worship as the focal point of a life of discipleship, and that it is from worship that we.move out in response to God's love in Christ to give ourselves in service to others for his sake. According to Jesus, then, worship is the first duty of a Christian: and many since .1 udas have failed to recognize this point. Worship is the means whereby we attach ourselves to his Person, and attachment to him is the fertile ground out of which spring all Christian graces • including the sharing of what we have with those who know real physical want. "As the branch cannot hear fruit of itself except it abide in the vine, no more can you except you abide in me." If I had been pour and friendless in those days. I would have appealed every time to the devoted Mary rather than to the coldly calculating Judas. He who Spoke so disparagingly of pure worship under the guise of his interest in the physical needs of his fellow citizens, a few days later sold his Master and his own soul for thirty pieces of silver. To slight worship, public and private, in the professed interest of what is '•prac'tical" is to have the spiritual life go dry at it source. .ludasmistaken theory of worship and its relationship to a full and meaningful life survives today. We absent ourselves from public wor- shipfor business engagements, for recreation, for the need of a rest, or for any one of a dozen other reasons. And those, of us who neglect public worship are likely the same ones who neglect private ;worship too'. 11c excuse r I V t'S by saying, "Jesus says it doesn't matter so much how or when we worship, but how we live," But Jesus didn't say that! Judas said it. Jesus said that the way we worship deter- mines how we live. In this matter, some who call themselves Christians may really he followers of Judas rather than of Jesus.
