Deichert, the Holmesville Public school junior girls
der, found out that soccer can be a game of inches
ay morning in a GDCI feeder school soccer tour-
s played in Goderich. Carol went high after this shot
t. Joseph's Denise Connelly barely got her fingers on
the ball slowing the shot down. Realizing the ball was
headed for the net she raced after it but recovered it inside
the goal. The score was the only one in the game and
Kingsbridge went on to beeome the junior girls champs with
a i-3 win over Victoria. (staff photo)

although there was some
confusion as to who had ac-
tually "done the deed", I
finally got the straight goods
and it was ole "Ready"
hisself ... Jed De Jong. Way
to go, fella! This half ended 2-
1
But the last 45 minutes of
the game really belonged to
United. The team came on
strong and hustled the entire
time .. They had to cause if
they stood still for one second,
they'd be frozen to the spot or
blown to high heaven! Lordy,
it was cold and nobody envied
the team their "brief" at-
tire ! ! They were very
patriotic for Jubilee - three
and turned blue for us!! (cute
trick, guys!)
On with the game . . .the
checking was super -steady in
this period and it paid off with
another goal for Goderich, by
none other than Jed De Jong
(again) Really love the
limelight eh, Jeddy? With the
game tied up, United cer-
tainly put their best 'boot'
forward, but another goal
was not forthcoming even
with the wind in our favour.(it
only works for sailors,
anyway!!) The 90 minutes
concluded with the score 2-2.
Some exceptional soccer
was played by George Gould,
so . the "Player -of -,the -day"
award goes rightly to him. He
was truly a "heavyweight"
on the Field!! Ya did good,
George!
"Sportsman -of -the -game"
is "Ready Jeddy" who was
forceful and doubly en-
thusiastic. "The Sly Fox"
goes to "Sweet Pete"
Herlufsen who was par-
ticularly strong and super -
crafty in the second half. Way
to beat the 'feet, Pete! ! The
entire team supported each
other and ' gave assistance
whenever and wherever
needed and really deserved to
win this one. '
The second game was even
colder and tougher! If the
wind wouldn't have blown
•your mind, the "linesperson"
'would have! Where do they
dig these people up? It's so
hard to get "good help" these
days!
In more ways than this
though, the game was fated to
be below par, It began
d"uspiciottsly enbugh with that
cute little "dude", Dave Graf
scoring a fast and snappy
goal within, the first ten'
minutes of the game. This
always seems to mean more
gung-ho action, but such was
not the case. Mind you, the
guys triad, their darndest to
gain control and territory, but
they trie,d too hard and it
•ended in a slight case of
"overkill".
They over -reacted, over-
ran and mistimed quite a few
plays. And that wind left
everyone "winded" and out of
"puff"! (the puns are getting
worse - have you noticed?)

GODERICH SIGNAL STAR, THURSDAY, MAY 12;1
Familylife program to
be exten
By Wilma Oke
The Huron -Perth County
Roman Catholic Separate
School Board approved the
extension of the Family Life
program in the next school
term to the pupils in Kin-
dergarten, Grades one, two
and three, at a meeting of the
hoard in Dublin Monday
night.
The program was started
first in the spring of 1974 with
Grade eight pupils at -St.
.lames School in Seaforth,
then to all Grade 8 pupils in
the separate school system
and this year to the Grade
seven pupils as well.
Ronald Gladding of
Stratford, co-ordinator of the
Family Life program, said it
was started with the older
pupils," to meet a particular
and immediate need' but now
he said it is the opinion of
most educators that the
logical and most effective
area to begin with is the
primary grades. The pupil at
this level is assuming more
responsibilities in the home
and can learn to understand
his contribution to family life
and the significance of family
living, he said.
"Many opportunities arise
in primary grades that allow
us to help children learn
about their bodies, emotions,
and the differences between
boys and girls", he stated.
"We learn best by following
a logical progression. with
concepts building gradually
on one another. If we can
begin in the primary grades
to guide the children ac-
cording to Christian prin-
ciples, then we can provied a
firm base for the child's
growth," he went on to say,
He concluded, "In the
primary grades we would like
to concentrate on the three
areas of family, growth and
relationships, In sharing
ideas and feelings on these
topics, hopefully we can
develop and strengthen
positive attitudes in the
children towards their own
self-worth and towards un-
derstanding and respect for
others".
The board gave Gladding
and the Family Life Com-
mittee (composed of parents,
grabbing two ties
field, therefore United was
hard put to keep up this
dizzying pace and produce
any, first-rate plays. Most of
this 45 minutes was spent
trying to take possession of
the ball, but it was elusive to
the. point of near non-
existence! In their ear-
nestness, Goderich
repeatedly ran into in-
terference and flak they
really needn't have. They
tried desperately to corn-
pensate for lack of ball
control and as- a result, gave
themselves a very heavy time
of it.
First -of -the -season jitters
and lack of unity . ..it's un-
derstandable but provoking
when you're out there putting
your heart and soul on the
line.
Towards the end of this
period, St. Thomas sneaked,
in a quick goal and thus the
score was 1-1.
The second half had us with
the wind in Goderich's favour
(hut not in their corner!) It
proved to be every bit as
wretched and irritating as the
first. More shots -on -goal were
attempted, but to no avail.
The guys tried every trick in
the book (and some not in the
hook!) and even that didn't
help.
But if Goderich wasn't
getting anywhere, neither
was the opposition! It was a
Mexican stand-off (whatever
that is!) Finally, all the
agony (and none of the ec-
stacy!) was over and the
team creaked off the . field
sutisfie'd that they had at
least held on 'til the bitter
end.
Much as the team tried to
get it 'together, there still.
wasn't much to commend.
\lthr'urgh Clare Sager wasn't
as proficient as he can be.and
has been: still he was on top
of the situation and effected
several crucial moves that
determined the play to our
'dubious' advantage. , a

"Player -of -the -day" goes to
a new man, Henry Martens
who was in tight control and

some adept passes and

"Sportsman -of -the -game"
is "the Dude" who is a good
man in anybody's
estimation!! He's alert and
fiercely determined. He
provided his teammates with
numerous opportunities to
command the situation and
he proved to be valuable
defensively. David Graf
never does anything by half!
Next Saturday, the 'B'
team plays in Strathroy at 6
p.m. and the 'A's play on
Sunday in Oakridge at 5 p.m.
