Dear Readers...........
The temptation is for mom
to call her friend who just
happens to be the wife of the
personnel manager down at
the plant Or dad to corner his
golfing buddy and push. the
poor guy into talking with his
son.
"It's not what you know but
who you know," Boors and
dad remind the kid as they
push him out the door for the
interview arranged for him.
Not only are mons and dad
risking the friendship of their
influential acquaintances and
lessening their son's chances
for a job ever in that
particular company, they are
doing absolutely nothing to
teach their son about the best
ways to go about lob hunting
letters....... .
other form of protest left to

Council Chamber
Perhaps I should mention
that whenever my reaction is
different from that of my
fellow councillors, •I do not
remotely feel that mine is the
only "right" way_ and that the
others are "out of step' We
simply du not starch to the
same music at times. And if
you wish to hear nine voices
say the same thing nine times
over•, you certainly will not
vote for me next time But I
do not create the difficulties, I
merely react to them.
I have noticed that the
Mayor is becoming a bit
jpctatorial. 1 say this with due
respect to the Mayor's hits
dworking person and his
demanding position. Both of
us have years of council
'experience and 1 feel con-
fident that we have found a
level on which we can fight
for principles and attack
issues, without . reaching for -
.the person behind it. I think
the Mayor will agree that We-
are on good working terms.
spiced by some parting of
ways on some issues and
some methods.
It was this point I'„was
trying to make on Monday,
perhaps clumsily, yet out of
concern for the position of the
council, an office I hold in
high regard and cannot serve
well without independence.

The one looking for work
should get up early that day,
have a shower. put on fresh
clothes which .Ire neatly
pressed. eat a good breakfast
and lease the house with a
positive attitude.
The potential worker
should -go to the prospective
employers appearing to have
some knowledge about their
husi,rtess. For instance, if one
was going to apply for a job at
l)RMCo, it wouldn't be at all
foolish to do a bit of
homework before going to
plant know how long the
firm has been in "sbusiness,
how many employees it has,
what is produced there,
where the company's
niar•kets are located, how
l)RMCo's products stack up
ort the world market.
The person interested in a
job in the welding shop, for
instance, would do well to talk
to the person in charge of that
department. Try to deter-
mine what the job entails,
what kind of person the
company needs, what
previous experience is best
etc. Then when the
op-
portunity comes to talk to the
personnel manager about a
job in the welding shop, It will
he a simple matter to talk
ip,telligently about the
specific job and the special
talents you possess for that
particular job.
If the personnel manager
