o smoking law
The county board of health
has acknowledged the need
far non-smoking areas in
public places and urges the
immediate designation of
such areas, county council
was told last Friday.
Noting that 58 per cent of
the population are non-
smokers. the hoard says
there is growing pressure for
-legislation. and govern-
mental directive`` .to
designate non-snioking areas
in airplanes restaurants,
stores and other liublic
places.
Government legislation
passed in the United States'
provides for summary fines
of five dollars to 'f25 for
smoking in such areas, it was
pointed out.
The board also proposed a
Joint committee with Perth
County to disc44s sharing of
services and consirjer ad-
ministrative amalgamation
of the two health units.
Several councillors voiced
objections to the idea of a
ioi•nt health unit. Reeve
William Elston of Morris
'township told the board he is
disappointed more money is
not spent making the Huron
health unit work better in-
stead of studying a joint
committee.
He likes the idea of the
health unit being controlled
by the county, he said, and
feels a joint unit is un-
necessary.
Food outlets watched
Dr. G, F, Mills, medical
officer of health for Huron
County, says all food
premises within the county
must comply with the
requirement of the Food.
Premises Regulation under
he Public Health Act or face
the possibility of legal
prosedut ion.
Dr. Mills, in a recent
memo, stated that the
majority of food premises in
^the county are of excellent
quality, but there are a few
premises in non-compliance.
He said these premises must
be taken to task for their non-
compliance,
He cited as an example the
case of Mr. A. Kauk, owner
and operator 'of the Manor
Hotel in Wingham, who
pleaded guilty on April 27 to,•
charges laid by the Huron
County Health Unit underAhe
Public Health Act, Food.
Premises regulation.
The first charge laid was
failure to provide multi-
service articles such as
glasses, that do not exceed
100 bacterial colonies, the
acceptable level. Under this
charge, a fine of $300 was
imposed,
The second charge laid was
failure to ensure that all
employees wear suitable hair
restraints which confines the
hair. Under this charge, a
fine of '+:'00 was imposed.

CB gets wolf
A CB radio call from Dale
Sterling sent Joe Storey his
son Jim, of RR 3, Clinton and
Bob Sterling in pursuit of a
wolf last week.
The incident, which oc-
curred on April 27, took the
Men to the Bayfield Line in
Goderich Township where a
wolf was chasing a dog owned
by Dale Sterling. When the
men arrived, the wolf was
running into the bush, but
when the animal was shot at,
it turned and ran towards
them. The animal had been
frightened of the shots which
echoed in the bush,
Joe Storey fired the third
shot which killed the animal
and the brain was then sent to
Toronto for rabies tests.
Linda Cunningham from the Auburn 1-H club and Doreen
lefferson from the Donnybrook club "received County
Honors#at the 1-H Achievement Day in Blyth on April 30.
