United Soccer is back
Tally -ho! "Ns spring and all
my young men's fancies have
turned to thoughts of... yup!
you guessed it... good old
Soccer!! The maroon and
white can again be seen,
flashing around the Goderich
green(! (Is that talent?? I
can rhyme at the drop of a
hat, or anything for that
matter. Not great poetry,
mind you, but colourful!
Eeek, p.uns so early in the
season!)
I guess I should bid a
cheery hello to all of you
faithful Goderich United
soccer fans and friends, who
have persevered throughout
the years. despite „f my
column, my "witticisms' and
my underwhelming sports
acumen, and stuck by both
teams. We have most of the
old faces (and legs) back with
us and a few new ones who
look promising (on the soccer
field, of course!) .
Also have the same old, old
coaches (sorry John and
Wally, just being cute! !) and
the same old "groupies"... in
fact, we're all too old for this
stuff but we delude ourselves

s
into believingwe can move
and groove with the best of
them! What dreamers we
are! (actually, it's more like
a nightmare!
Now, to the "big
business"... the guys and
their game. They've been put
to the test already with a
couple of exhibition games
(and what an exhibition!)
I tell you, you never saw so
many players get whipped
into shapeso fast in all your
days! They not only "glowed,
perspired and sweated"...
they puffed, panted and,
passed out 'for good
measure!!
Most of the fellas play
hockey and -or ski over the
winter and they figure they're
"in shape" 'til they clomp
onto the soccer field; then
they find out the grass really
.is.greener on the other side!
Ah, but they looked as cute
as ever in their uniforms,
even though they were too
pooped to primp!!
Well, back to the reporting
rather than the gossip, in-
teresting though it maybe.
Last Sunday was our first
league game and the "B"
team who play 3rd Division,
came out winners against St.
Thomas •'B's", 2 - 1. Not a
had opener, eh?
The first half was played
very aggressively by United
and their persistence in
holding back the St. Thomas
defense paid off.
"The Toe" was in there like
a "dirty sock". (I can't help
it! !) He was here, there and
everywhere with assistance
and inventiveness. He ran
interference and made some
terrific moves and passes as
'good as I've ever seen. (but
then again, what do I
know??)
The wind was a persistent
factor in this match and time
after'. time, the Goderich guys
would take a shot on the net to
have it carried over, around
or away, but never into the
goal,,
Goalie Mark Alexander
didn't see too much action in
this half,' but he handled
himself with effectiveness.
After Goderich had made
repeated attacks on the
enemy zone, we finally
succeeded in gaining a goal
from an excellent throw -iii by
George Gould, The St.
Thomas defense fluffed it,
the goalie goofed up and little
old Jed de Jong slammed it in
the net -for the initial goal of
the game. That's what I call
"reflexive retaliation"! Way
to be ready, Jeddy!
With only a very few
minutes remaining in this
half, United held onto the
game with confidence and
zeal.
During the last half, the
players flagged a'bit, but they
still managed to remain a
threat to the opposition. They
were headed towards a shut
out when Eric Mitchell ef•
fected a sly pass over to Mike
Sully who,• after great
deliberation (and I mean '
great deliberation"!) sent
goal number two reeling into
the net! Michael, that foot
needs talking to!!
St., Thomas buckled down
and doubled their efforts to
gain some control along with
some points and eventually,
in spite of deft defensive
maneuvers from United, they
stole our shut -out .and
snapped in their only goal of
the day.
The game remained pretty
much the name with some
heavy checking from "Lean
and Mean" Mitchell (most
notably or noticeably!)
amongst others, until the
final whistle from the referee.
So people, fora first league
encounter, I think we
presented ourselves
reasonably well. There were
plenty of great 'plays and not -
too -bad tackling and
checking,
Larry Donnelly, George
Gould and .Mike Sully were
stalwart and steady, par-
ticularly in the second half.
Pete Teichert was noticeably
strong and skillful and Eric
Mitchell was definitely an
added factor.
"Player -of -the -day" has to
be Rick "the Toe" Fisher who
performed at his peak. He
was clever and his footwork
was fast and fancy! Foxy
loves machismo!!!
"The Sly Fox" award'goes
to Rolf Gottschalk who has
presence of mind and is a
calming and steadying in-,
fluence on the defense and
knows how to use his
knowledge for the best ,ad-
vantage.
Sportsman -of -the -game"
is Mark Alexander who.,
although fairly untried and
inexperienced at goaltending,
shows great promise and
strength of character.
"A Foxy Special" for Larry
Donnelly for a job well done.
Right on, United! Let's have
a fantastic season! Rah!
Rah! Rah! (Every now and
then the cheerleader in me
sneaks out!! According to the
guys it happens too often ! ! )
-Next week we have two
home games, starting at 4
p.m, on the Sunday. So,
boogie down and catch us
doing our number.
We'd appreciate your
continued support and en-
thusiastic interest for us and
our game. Okay? Remember
to have a good life 'cause you
deserve it, But most of
Foxy loves ya!,
