Board won't admit
4.
child before deadline
The Huron County Board of
Education stuck by its guns
Monday afternoon and
refused to entertain thoughts
of allowing a Woodham
couple's daughter early
admission into kindergarten..
The board received a letter
from Mr. and Mrs. L. Taylor
of RR I, Woodham, asking
that the board allow a child to
enter kindergarten although
her birthday is three days
after the board's December
31 deadline in the year of
enrolment.
The couple asked for
special consideration
claiming their problem was
more severe than that of most
parents. The child in question
was born January 3, 1973 and
another child was born to
them December 4, 1973. The
couple pointed out that the
timing means that the
children will attend the same
school,in the same class,
with the same teacher.
The parents feel that the
situation will "cause a.,very
intense competition between
the two". They admit that a
41ittte eotnpetition never hurts
anyone but feel that this scale
may cause "very serious
problems not only at school
but at home".
Clinton Trustee Dorothy
Williams said the situation
could be an advantage to the
children recalling an instance
in Clinton where two children
helped each other out both at
home and in school.
those selected for the trip
were notified. Helen Brindley
of Colborne Township was
chosen to represent Huron
County and while she wasn't
successful in being chosen for
the six weeks trip to the
British Isles, she received
special mention for the
splendid presentation she
gave. A girl from Haldimand
County was chosen as the
representative.
While congratulations are
certainly in order to the girl
from. Haldimand County,
Colborne says
congratulations to Helen too
for even being selected to
present a slide presentation
and talk and the splendid
showing she made and even
getting to this rung of the
ladder.
