Bantams win
The Goderich Lakeport
Steel Bantams completed a
phenomenal season that was
capped with the Ontario
Bantam BB championship
following their victory over
Stouffville Tuesday.
The Bantams lost few
games during the regular
season and proved worthy of
that record with .an even
more impressive record
during the playoffs.
En route to the final series
the Bantams disposed of
Strathroy in three 'straight
•games and despite losing the
first game of the best -of -five
series to Glanbrook, the
Steelers rebounded with three
victories to enter the semi-
finals.
The Steelers experienced a
little more difficulty with a
stubborn Sarnia Township
team in the semi finals as the
series went five games. After
Goderich won the third game
to take a 2-1 lead in games,
Sarnia tied Goderich in the
fourth game to force a fifth
and deciding game which the
bantams won in Goderich and
earned the right to meet
Stouffville in the final. -
The series opened in
Goderich last Wednesday and
it took Goderich a period to
get untracked. Stouffville
held a one goal after the first
period but Goderich rallied
for two goals in the second
period and added three more
in the third period for a 5 -land then Mailiet scored three
victory. minutes later from Madge
After Stouffville captain
Ted Waite scored in the first
period Goderich got second
period goals from Larry
Madge and Dan Mailiet for a
one goal lead after two
periods. Mailiet then added
the insurance goal early in
the third period on a pass
from Trebish.
Goderich captain Mike
Hodges increased the margin
to three goals as . he `Beat
Forrester after taking a pass
from Jim Costello. Hodges
returned the favor later in the
period as he assisted on a goal
by Costello who beat
Forrester on the long side
after winning a battle for the
puck in the corner.
Goderich grabbed a two -
game lead in the series as
they skated to 4-2 victory in
Stouffville Saturday night.
Larry Madge opened the
games scoring with a goal 10
minutes into the game.
Mailiet and McDonald
assisted on the play. Stouf-
fville tied the game less than
a minute later on a goal by
Robert Gierkink.
Goderich enjoyed a
prosperous second period as
they increased their lead to
two goals on markers by
Madge and Mailiet. Madge
scored his second of the game
from Mailiet and McDonald

Stouffville narrowed the
lead to one goal in the third
period as Ted Waite beat
Goderich goaltender Steve
Gallow at 10:37. Madge then
scored the insurance marker
and his third goal of the game
with the assist going to line
mate Rob Trebish.
Facing elimination in the
third game Stouffville rallied
from a 2-1 third period deficit
with four goals in the final
period and a 5-3 victory.
After a scoreless first
period, Madge gave Goderich
the lead with a goal two
minutes into the period.
Waite tied the game for
Stouffville minutes later
before" Maillet again gave
Goderich the lead with a goal
at 9:13 of the period.
Down by one goal in the
third period and facing
elimination Stouffville
carried the play to Goderich
and scored four goals to send
the series into the fourth
game,
Stouffville scored three
straight goals within the span
of two minutes mid -way
through the third period to
take the lead for the first time
in the game, 4-2. Trebish got
one goal back just seven
seconds later as he took a
pass from Mailiet and beat
Forrester to bring Goderich
• within reach. Jim Chilvers
then scored the insurance
goal for Stouffville with five
minutes remaining in the
game.
Despite faltering in the
second period Tuesday night
the Bantams played strong
hockey during the first and
third periods to win the
championship 4-2.
Goderich's defensive style
of hockey flustered the
Stouffville offense and at the
same time created scoring
opportunities. Rob Trebish
scored two first period goals
"'and Dan Mailiet added the
other for a three goal lead.
Stouffville took advantage of
Goderich penalties scoring
two goals in the second period
to narrow the lead to one goal.
Trebish completed his hat
trick early in the third period.
to regain a two -goal lead for
Goderich. The Steelers
forechecked Stouffville
constantly and when they did
manage to get near the
Goderich net Steve Gallow
stopped them cold.
The series was a fine
exhibition of hockey and the
bantams got a total effort.
from all team members to
bring another Ontario
championship to the town of
