In regards 'to Selective
Traffic Enforcement studies
in Huron County, it has been
found that between October
sand May that the offence of
"Following Too .Close" has
been directly or indirectly
yinvolved in 70 percent of the
accidents reported,
A more shocking statistic
was realized in the summer
months. Between May and
October it was calculated that
the offence of "Following Too
Close" has been directly or
indirectly involved in 80
percent of all reported
collisions.
"HOW IS YOUR
FOLLOWING DISTANCE?"
The Highway Traffic Act
reads,:
ectlon 105(1) The driver or
operator of a motor vehicle
shall not . follow another
vehicle more closely than is
reasonable and prudent
having due rega%d for the
speed of such vehicle and the
traffic on and the conditions
of the highways.
For Trucks(2) ` The driver
or operator of a commercial
motor vehicle when driving
on a highway outside of a city,
town or village shall not
follow within 200 feet of
another commercial motor
vehicle, but this shall not be
construed to prevent one
commercial motor vehicle
overtaking and passing
another such vehicle.
Something I think all
drivers should keep in mind
closely may.hurry,
in order to reduce your
chances of being involved in
this type of collision is to ask
themselves, "If that vehicle
ahead stops, will I be able to
stop in time or will 1 become
part .of his trunk equipment?"
Always drive defensively
and be prepared for the
unexpected.
The Safety League of
Ontario estimates that if you
leave a minimum of one car
length or 20 feet for every 10
mph while following another
vehicle on a highway you
should be reasonably safe. (A
Highway is any road used by
the public).
For those truckers who like
to follow within the 200 foot
legal following distance
beware. If that truck ahead
stops suddenly, you may be
driving a coffin.
The fine for this offence in
Huron County is a minimum
of $28.00 and maximum
$103.00 and a demerit point
total of four.
If you are charged with
careless driving the fine is
"x108.00 minimum fine and six
demerit points. This section
generally fits a rear end
collision as the section reads
as follows:
Section 83 Every person is
guilty of the offence of driving
carelessly who drives a
vehicle on a highway without
due care and attention or
without reasonable con-
sideration for other persons
using the highway and on

suspended for a period of not
more than two years.
Check your following
distance and speed.
Watch out for that careless
driver. Drive defensively.
Don't become a statistic.

Can't Canada
offer something
better to women
The Alliance for Life, the
national co-ordinating body
for the pro-life movement in
Canada, called upon Federal
Health and Welfare Minister
Marc Lalonde to resign if he
was unable or unwilling to
reverse his ` department's
flagrantly pro -abortion
policies.
In a letter to Marc Lalonde,
dated March -7, Alliance
President '3we'n Landolt
pointed out that in his recent
statement outlining what the
government intended to do
about the Badgley Report,
only policies making abor-
tions more easily acceptable
were given while none of the
serious abuses of the law
were even mentioned.
She cited in particular his
plans to pressure the
provinces into . creating
abortion clinics, thinly
disguised as "women's
clinics"; his intention to hand
over large sums of money to
affiliates of the notoriously
pro -abortion Planned
Parenthood Federation of
Canada, which i deeply
involved with abortion
referral; his hints that he
intends to pressure hospitals
into doing abortions even
when it is, offensive to the
hospital and its staff; and his
inclusion of abortion coun-
selling as a "family planning
service".
She noted that this made
nonsense of Mr. Lalonde's
own statements that the
government did not regard
abortion as a birth control
measure.
Mrs. Landolt went on to
point out that Mr. Lalonde
had not discussed or proposed
any remedies for the flagrant
abuses of the law uncovered
by the Badgley Report, in
particular the fact that some
hospitals rubber stamp
abortion applications by
accepting a use of the term
"danger to mental health".
Another problem on: -
covered by the report, the
lack of protection rights of
doctors and nurses who
refused to do abortions, was,
similarly of no apparent
concern to Mr. Lalonde.
Finally, Mrs; Landolt noted
that Lalonde has made no
statement indicating any
intention on the part of the
government to provide more
support Mt • women with
problem pregnancies who
wish to carry their children to
term.'
Said " Mrs. Landolt,
"Instead of financial, social
and psychological support
women are offered the cheap
and dehumanizing "solution"
of abortion. Is this the best
that the Government can
offer the women of Canada?"
