South River
By Liz Turcotte
Point Edward- moved into
the C division consolation
finals, by humiliating South
River 6-0 in a Saturday
morning game.
Mark Whitlock gave Point
Edward a 1-0 lead at 5:14 of
the first period, with an
unassisted goal. He skated
around South River's
defencemen and backhanded
his own rebound into the net.
Both teams skated fast and
checked each other closely.
End to: end rushes were not
uncommon and both goalies
had to keep alert to stop any
shots that came their way.
At 6:57 of the period,
Whitlock scored another goal
for his team. He faked the
goalie out -of the net and
backhanded the puck in
behind him.
Peter Hall and Roy Wager
played a strong period for
South River and seemed tobe
in- front of the Point Edward
net when they weren't
carrying the puck down the
ice. They had the opportunity
of scoring, but Joey Barnes in
net, foiled those plans.
With only 52 seconds gone
out of the second period,
Whitlock scored his third goal.
of the game. He jammed the
marker in under the pads of
South River's goalie, making
the score 3-0 for Point
Edward.
Captain of thg Point
Edward team, Craig Morgan,
sent the next point into the
South River net. Morgan
moved in on the goalie, who,
was coming out of the net to
stop him. He then moved
around and backhanded the
puck in behind the goal line.
South River had many
scoring opportunities, but the
difference was the,goalten-;
ding. Joey Barnes, the Point.
Edward goalie was alert and.
quick kicking them out with
his pads and catching them in
his glove.
Both goaltenders made
some excellent saves in the
third period also. The pace
was fast and each team was
• forechecking effectively.
Point Edward's lead in-
creased to five goals at 2:50 of
the period.
Mark Robichaud passed the
puck across the goalmouth,
and David Barr was waiting
to tuck it in behind the goalie.
Craig Morgan got his
second goal of the game while
his team was shorthanded.
He took a quick wrist shot and
neatly placed it in the left side
of the net,
Final score of the game was
6-0 for Point Edward.
