Homes Atoms travelled to
Hanover on March 23 to
cotnpete in the Atom House
league tournament. In the
first„ game Goderich dropped
a close 4 - 2 decision to Owen
Sound. Goderich opened the
scoring midway through the
first period on a goal by Paul
Brenner assisted by Brent
Williamson. Owen Sound
came back to tie the score,
only to have Paul, Brenner
give Goderich the lead again
with an assist going to Lee
Frisby. Owen Sound then
- came back with three
unanswered goals to give
them their margin of victory.
The locals played a strong
third period, but were unable
to get the equalizers.
Scott Ross got the third
Goderich goal late in the
game. He stole the puck from
Kincardine's Dave Zim-
merman and beat Emmerton
high to the glove side for the
score.
Goderich had a power play
at 12:00 of the period and
tried to get through Tim
Emmerton, but Kincardine
defencemen held them at
bay. Kincardine finished the
game leading 5-3.
MacDonald working against
clock in chess club playoffs
Last week the 1977 play-offs
got underway with the
possibility of some upset
victories taking place.
In Level I Chas. MacDonald
has found • himself in the
toughest spot he has been in
,.all season.! Chas. has got the
clock working against him
with only five minutes left
after 24 moves! To make
matters • even more serious
Louis Stadelmann has a
tremendous attack un-
derway! Louis has got a very
good chance of making an
upset 4iictory in this game but
he will have to be very careful
as Charlie is notorious for
squirming out of these
situations and coming up with
come from behind victories.
In the other Level I series

Dennis Little has a slight
advantage over Dave Weary.
Going into the end game
.Dennis has a one pawn edge
but will have to play
flawlessly to come up with a
victory as the game appears
tohave great drawing
possibilities. Once again
Dennis is going to have to
play very cautiously as . an
error can give Dave a vic-
tory.
In Level 2, Sam Hassan,
unfortunately, found himself
unavailable for the play-offs
due to business obligations.
Sam, therefore, forfeited his
series to Doug Brindley
rather than hold up the play-
offs. It is unfortunate this had
to happen as Sam was a
strong contender for the
second level, however Sam's
good sportsmanship shown in
these circumstances is
certainly appreciated. In the
second level semi-final series
Bob Dick and Brian Miller
• were to start their, first game;
onr The < weeken+dwhile Jim*
Kingsley managed to win the
first game against Doug
Brindley.
' In Level 3 semi-finals Kirk
Lyndon came up with a
victory to take a one game
lead over Don Bogie. No other
play-off games were played
in Level 3 or 4 due to heavy
absenteeism caused by
people travelling on the
winter school holidays.
The play-off standings as of
Mar. 23 are as follows:
In the second game,
Goderich Glen Marks came
up against a team from
Mount Forest and defeated
them 5 - 2. Paul Brenner
notched the first four goals
with Randy Chapman picking
up the fifth. Assists went to
Lee Frisby with two, and
singles to Dave Smith and
Mike Brenner. Mount Forest
made it hot for Goderich in
the second when they
narrowed the gap to 3 - 2, but
two short-handed goals in the
third period- slowed them
down.
By defeating Mount Forest,
Glen Mark Homes advanced
in the tourmament against
Seaforth. In this game
Goderich used six first period
goals and six more in the
remainder of the game to
gain a 12 - 0 shutout over
Seaforth.
Jeff LeBeau earned his
shutout by making -a good
save on a penalty shot in the
third period. Point getters for
Glen Mark Homes were Paul
Brenner with five goals and
two assists, Brent Williamson
with three goals and two
assists, Mike Daer with two
goals and, one assist ,and
bandy Chapman and Mike
Brenner with one goal each.
Tim Bakker picked up four
assists, with David Almasi
and Dave Smith with one
assist each.
The boys returned Thur-
sday and came up against a
team from Walkerton.
Walkerton came from behind
to tie Glen Mark 5 - 5, but then
went on to win the game on
GDDERICB SI:GNAI.>STARr T,
bows to
penalty shots. Paul Brenner
led the offence by getting all
five, goals. This was Glen
Mark's strongest game of the
tournament so the whole
team worked hard.
In the fifth and final game
Glen Mark ran out of steam
as they were defeated 2 - 0 by
7
a rested Monkton team. This
was the goaltender's game as
there were numerous saves
at both ends, but penalties
probed costly .to Glen Mark.

Township adopts recreation
budget
Goderich township council
accepted the recom-
mendation of the township
recreation committee at the
last meeting and adopted a
$3,550 budget set up by the
committee. The budget
allows $1,500 for ad-
ministration, $1,000 for figure
skating, $550•for hockey, $200
for crafts, $200 for softball
and $l00 for a picnic.
In other business council
denied a request by Mr. G.
Smith to have part of Plan 4 of
the township secondary plan
rezoned to permit a rural
residential development. A
presentation for Smith was
made by the engineering.firm
of Kiar and Ross and
requested council to pass an
amendment to the plan to
permit the use.
Road superintendent Joe
Potter was instructed to
apply to the province of
Ontario for subsidy on the
extra costs the township was
burdened with for snow
removal this winter. A
ministry memorandum was
sent to the township to
calculate the subsidy and is to
be completed by Potter.
Council filed a request by
M.J. Driver to have his
trailer camp licence renewed
and that _he be allowed to
increase the number of sites
in the camp. The request was
filed pending an amendment
to the existing zoning order. •
of $3,500
filbert Brall requested
permission to erect a
residence on.his property and
commence his fish farming
operation later. Council had
earlier accepted Brall's plans
to make a viable income from
a small section of land by fish
farming and allowed him to
sever the land and put-up a
permanent residence. It
instructed him to commence
his operation before building
the house however and stood
by that decision when Brall
asked that he be allowed to
build now.
Building permits vee
issued to Hugh Lobb for a
house addition., Ed
McPherson for a garage,
Donald Duff for a mobile
home and Harold Kirkconnell
for a house addition. A
request, by Frank Graham to
build a house was held pen-
ding approval of the health
unit.
The council instructed the
township road superintendent
to call tenders for the supply
and spreading of ap-
proximately 16,000 cubic
yards of gravel to be spread
by June 15. Tenders are to be
opened April 4.
