(staff photo) Knights tourney set for April The 12th annual hockey tournament, sponsored by the Father Stephen Eckert Council, Knights of Colum- bus, of Seaforth and District, will take place on Saturday, April 2nd and Sunday, April 3rd, at the Seaforth Memorial Arena. Teams are entered from the separate schools in the district areas and vie for various ,trophies donated by the Seaforth K of C Council. Games will commence on Saturday at 10 a.m. and on Sunday at 12 noon. The following is the schedule: Seniors - 10 a.m. - Mt. Carmel vs. St. Columban; 11 a.m. - Dublin vs. Zuric-h; 12:30 p.m. - Seaforth vs. winner of 10 a.m. game; 1:30 p.m. - Loser of 10 a.m. game vs. loser of 11 a.m. game for "B" trophy; 2:30 - winner of 12:30 p.m. game vs. winner of 11 a.m. for "A" trophy. I • • ••• Ontario Bantam final seri s The Goderich Lakeport Steel Bantams played the first game of the Ontario final against Stouffville, last night after disposing of Sarnia Township in five games. With the scores tied at one game apiece the bantams on a crucial game 7-3 in C4inton last Wednesday. Facing elimination onstheir home rink Sarnia overcame a -two-goal deficit to tie the Steelers 3-3 last Saturday but Were unable to cling to the lifeline and were defeated 5-1 in Goderich Sunday. Goderich won the best of five semi-final series and the right to meet Stouffville in the - final with three victories, a tie and one loss in the five games. In Clinton last Wednesday Goderich racked up five goals in the second period, after a scoreless first period, and added two more in the third en route to a 7-3 victory and a one game lead in the series. Larry Madge provided the offensive punch as he scored four goals and added one assist. Linemate Rob Trebish scored two goals and Dan Maillet added the other goal. Madge opened the scoring with two goals within the first two minutes of play in the second period. Rob Trebish increased the margin to three before Tony Brenders scored a powerplay goal for Sarnia. Trebish replied for Goderich with his second goal just a minute and a half later to regain the •)Steelers two goal advantage. Sarnia fought back with a goal late in the second period but 45 seconds later, Dan Maillet scored a short-handed goal for Goderich to make the Midgets lose final two. The Goderich Green and Parent Midgets finished off their 1977 season dropping two games at the Wingham Midget Hockey Tournament last week. Goderich lost their opening game to Orangeville 5-3 March 18 and were shaded 4-3 by Beamsville March 21 in Wingham. Orangeville broke a 3-3 tie with a goal late in the second period and added an in- surance marker in the third period to beat Goderich 5-3 in the opening game played in Howick. Goderich opened the scoring early in the first period as Roger Lewis con- verted a pass from Team- mate Steve Arbour after just two minutes of play. Orangeville tied the score five minutes later on an unassisted effort by Glen Murray. Arbor put Goderich in the lead again as he drilled in a shot from Lewis, and Paul Helesic. Orangeville then rallied for two goals before the end of the first period and a 3-2 lead. Goderich evened the score two minutes into the second period on a 'goal by Helesic. Mid -way through the period Murray scored the winner for Orangeville on another unassisted play. Neil Anderon scored the -insurance marker in the third period and Goderich was unable to mount an offensive attack. In the second game played in Wingham, Beamsville Suns reach semi-final The Suncoast Suns Atoms took part in the Kincardine Winter Games hockey tournament during the school break. The Suns won their preliminary round game 3-0 over Ripley, but were eliminated by Port Elgin in the championship semi-finals by a similar 3-0 score. Walkerton defeated Port Elgin in the championship final. Against Ripley, Grant Garrow scored two goals. Todd Graham scored the other Goderich goal. Daryl. Madge and Shawn. Rahbek each had one assist!' Goaltenders Terry Bean and Randy Gaynor combined for the shutout in the Suns' net. Terry Chappell scored twice and Mike Prange once for Port Elgin in their win over the Suns. Coach Richard Madge' felt his team had peaked in their. WOAA Atom consolation championship series sweep over Hanover last week, and that fact, combined with -the absence of two players through illness, left the Suns at less than their best on the tournament. "However the kids had a lot of fun, and that is the main thing, anyway", commented the Suns coach. The tournament games were the last of the season for the Suns who played a total of 37 league, exhibition, playoff and tournament games, winning 25 and losing 12. The Suns- finished in second place in league standings, and won the WOAA consolation championship. They also won the consolation championship at the Seaforth Winter Car- nival tournament. With a total of nine players returning next year, coach Madge feels the Suns can look forward to another good season in 1977-78. Beamsville took an early two -goal lead in the first period on goals by Ron Friesen and Dean Scott in the first five minutes of play. Hugh Hanly narrowed the lead with a goal late in the first period after taking a pass from Rick Rawson. Goderich tied the 'game early in the second period on a goal by Steve Arbor with Hanly and Rawson assisting. Beamsville broke the tie just one minute later on a goal by Roger Whitfield but Goderich fought back to tie the game on a goal by Mike -Larkin at 6:43 of the final period. Whitfield broke the tie scoring the Winning goal and his second of the game with less than four minutes left. The loss was the second of the tournament for Goderich and eliminated them from further competition. score 5-2. Sarnia got back in the game in the third period on a goal by Ian Brydges but Madge put, the game out of reach with two goals late in the final period to complete his four goal performance. Sarnia took advantage of defensive lapses in the fourth game scoring two goals late in the second period to earn a 3-3 tie in a game played in Sarnia Saturday. Goderich scored the only goal of the first period and after giving up an early second period goal to Sarnia scored two more midway through the second period for a two goal lead. Goderich relaxed on the two -goal lead and Sarnia stormed back with two goals within a 20 second span to tie the game 3-3. There was no scoring in the third or 10 minute overtime period.. Both teams missed several scoring opportunities, but Sarnia enjoyed an edge in the play in both the third and overtime period. Goderich easily controlled play in the fifth game as they skated and forechecked and racked up a 5-4 victory on the strength of fourogoals in the second period. Play was somewhat scrambly in the first period and Larry Madge put Goderich ahead with the first of his twp goals as in a pass from T Maillet at 5.50 of period.
