The year 1977 will indeed be .long remembered. An :interesting "wrinkle" however has been .drawn to my attention via a brochure with a somewhat -less -than - accurate map style diagram of the core area of Goderich . which is being distributed to visitors. Any tourist who attempts to use this "diagram" will, indeed, "make Goderich (their) own home town for a )W ,7-8 ct. tE RCE ?, 0i .SH >OYNT EACH Iders anxious to -form ociation of tradesmen I area home builders ated tradesmen met k in an initial attempt lish a local chapter of Ontario Builders tion. ximately 25 builders desmen met with the of establishing a ch and District 5, Association,• to lCover the area- of ounty. "The objectives of forming the association are to keep abreast of building codes, practices, standards and new products available." The group will hold its next , meeting on April 18. Bruce power plant exceeded expectations Total unit energy cost df Ontario Hydro's Pickering nuclear generating station, east of Toronto, was 7.8 mills a kilowatt-hour in 1976. This is approximately one-half the cost of operating Hydro's most energy efficient -coal- fired generating station. A mill equals one-tenth- of a cent. Bruce Heavy Water Plant "A" exceeded all ex- pectations last year by few (perhaps not so golden) days this year" just trying k) figure out how to get where! - If I may be permitted a little tongue-in-cheek description of tourists using this diagram..-- _ AROUND THE WORLD FOR A SHORTCUT Betty and Bennie are residents of Ridgewood Park who send a copy of the diagram to their friends Jack and Jill who live in Windsor and who are not familiar with Goderich. Come and see us, Betty and Bennie wrote to their friends. "We live on the north shore of the Maitland River. Use the diagram to get here". Unfortunately, neither Betty nor Bennie studied the diagram before sending it to Windsor. Jack and Jill approached Goderich from the south on Highway 21. Jill (navigating) to Jack (driving: "Betty said that we would have to drive through town along Victoria Street. The diagram says to continue on Bayfield Road until we reach Elgin Avenue, then turn right for one block, then turn left and we'll be on Victoria." Jack continues to drive until he arrives at a "T" intersection ' at which the. street sign reads: Britannia Rd. and Bayfield Road. Jack (somewhat annoyed) : "Drat it Jill, Can't you read a map? This street is Britan- nia, not Elgin!" Jill (equally annoyed): The diagram says,Elgin!" Jack' must now make a decision. His choices are threefold : 1. Continue with deter- mination straight ahead through the houses in front of him until' he finds the depicted Elgin Ave; • Make a left turn and then appear dumb because the diagram clearly shows Victoria Street to be to the right _ of their present position; 3. Assume that an error has been made in naming the streets on the diagram - that the Elgin Ave. on the map is in reality Britannia Rd. (cursing the map -maker throughout). Jack assumes the latter choice to be correct and, to the blaring of the horns of the twenty cats .now stopped behind him, he confidently turns right in his quest of Victoria Street. Twenty minutes later Jack and Jill arrive at suburban Holmesville. Jack and Jil (together): "Somebody goofed." Not to be defeated, Jack and Jill turn the car around and head back to Goderich and arrive safely,. They continue on Highway 8 until they find the missing Victoria Street. Having some time on their 'hands before their an- ticipated arrival at the home of friends Betty and Bernie, Jack and Jill, who were Jehovah's Witnesses, seek the local Kingdom Hall. Jill (confidently): "This should be easy Jack. Just drive along Victoria Street until you see Judith Gooderham Pool. Turn right and continue for one block and the Hall will be directly east of the pool according to the diagram!" Needless to say, .resident friends, the Kingdom Hall was not to be found at that location by Jack and Jill. Still not to be defeated by the difficulties of the diagram, our visitors next attempted to find the location of two of their favorite sports activities; lawn bowling for Hill to seek seat Amid Liberal and Con- servative criticisms, Gordon Hill,° former president of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture announced Tuesday that he intends to run as a candidate of the New Democratic Party in the next provincial election. Hill, a Varna farrier, what stepped down from the 23,000 -member Federation last December, will contest the Middlesex riding of Progressive Conservative Robert Eaton, parliamentary assistant to Agriculture Minister William Newman. Liberal and Conservative Jack and , roller skating for J 111. Jill (less confidently): I think those sites should be easy to find. The lawn bowling place is on Elgin Avenue just across from the Pentecostal Tabernacle and the arena is probably just a little further south along Waterloo Street. Did they find their destinations? No way! Jill (confidence shaken): "Perhaps you'd better navigate Jack. I'll drive." Jack (confidently): "Good idea. I have more experience at navigating than you have anyway!" We still have some time on our hands. Let's check out the airport and the harbour. We go over to Victoria Street and drive north until we come to North Harbour Road. The airport should be visible on the floodplains of the river just north of the golf course." Did they see the airport across from the golf course? Nope! Jack (less confidently) : "Oh well, we can continue along north Harbor Rd., cross the river and we'll find the harbour and the salt mine on the north side of the river - and that should be right near our friends' place, right? (The salt mine north of the harljour? Both features north of the river?? North Harbour Road crossing the river??? Jack: "Oh Jill!" Jill: "Oh Jack!" Jack and Jill (both with confidence ' destroyed and weeping profusely) : "Betty and Bernie have moved too! Let's go up the hill and get some water!" G. R. S.
