rowdy fellows who "couldn't
sleep".
"You guys hungry?" I
asked hopefully, remem-
bering when my children
were babies they usually
dropped off to sleep when
their stomachs were full.
"Yeh!" they chorused
excitedly.
So it was to the kitchen for
toast and peanut butter and
jam and milk - lots of it.
It was really a great op-
portunity to get to know the
kids: for they were eager to
chat about everything from
how their team did during the
regular season to how many
boyfriends their sisters have.
And the kids were actually
quite mannerly and
thoughtful, for the most part
appreciative of a friendly,
homelike atmosphere where
rules were flexible enough to
permit midnight lunchei and
early -morning games of hide-
and-seek.
But it does add yet another
dimension to an already
hectic schedule - complicated
even further by extra bedding
to wash, extra shopping to do,
extra food to prepare. For-
tunately for me, my own
family is just great about
pitching in during that week
by making up beds and cots
and running errands.

But I say again, I'm happy
that YCW comes only once, a
year. Much oftener than that
and I'd be a physical wreck.
Somehow though, much of
it seemed all worthwhile by
just one remark made by a
student at Brookside School a
week or two before YCW
opened. I was out at the
school, visiting some of the
classrooms and answering
questions for the kids.
One young man raised his
hand and asked, "Is Signal -
Star going to be putting out
that daily newspaper during
Young Canada again this
year?"
When I assured him the
paper would be published, a
big broad smile crossed his
face.
"That's good," he said in a
tone which told me he meant
it and would appreciate the
little hockey sheet. •
After all, that's what the
weekly newspaper business
really is .... service to the
community in which that
newspaper is situated.
Judging from the youngster's
comments, we're doing
something right at least part
of the time.

eliminating the static problem brought
up by the officers. Chief King also told
the meeting that a new antenna, which
will improve transmission,, was due at
the local station soon, as was a stronger
radio unit which would boost the signal
output from two to five watts.
Chief King blamed the Bell Canada
salesman who handled the Goderich
account originally for not making local
officials completely aware of several
pieces of extra, and better quality
equipment, which were available and
which might well have prevented the
problems the officers have been com-
plaining about.
