The residents of Maitland Manor, Pinecrest Manor and the
Goderich Nursing Home were treated to a St. Patrick's Day
puppet show by the group, No Strings Attached, at Maitland
Manor last Thursday. No Strings Attached, funded by a
provincial grant, performs for nursing home residents and
school children in the Huron County area. (staff photo)
FROM INE MINISTER'S STUDY
BY TRE REVEREND
ROBERT J. CROCKER,
RECTOR, ST. GEORGE'S
CHURCH, GODERICH
During this season of Lent,
the stress is on
'giving up" something.
Traditionally one is sup-
posed to fast (go without
eating for certain periods)
nd abstain (omit certain
ods such as meat when one
does eat). So . Lent has
become a season for dieting,
and giving up habits that fail
to contribute to one's health:
such as smoking, over-
indulging in alcoholic
beverages, or becoming
angry.
This is all very healthy
particularly ifit extends
beyond the 40' days of Lent
and becomes a new and
better life -habit. And it is
good for one's spiritual life,
too, providing it is not done
for the sake of appearances,
and is done for the Lord's
sake (St. Matthew 6:17 and
Colossians 3:17)
The whole Lenten program
is intended to parallel the life
of Jesus. He spent 40 days in
the wilderness. He prepared
for the sufferings of Holy
Week, of which ours are
normally such a pale shadow.
His death and rising to life
again marks our death unto
sin and return, to a life of
righteousness. '
tie has brought good out of
evil and has redeemed the
world: and we are partakers
of that life and that redem-
ption. He has told us that, to
be His followers, we must
(1)d deny ourselves, (2),take
up our cross, and (3) follow
Him. (St. Matthew 16:24)
We would pray that our
Lenten self-denial begins to
fulfill the first requirement.
And, if our self-denial is
directed toward solving our
personal problems, it is a
start at "taking up our
cross".
But surely "our cross" is
not just our personal
problems. It is also the
problems of our world and
includes all areas of "man's
inhumanity to man". It
means that, as we attempt to
follow the steps of Jesus
during this' Lent, we should
make our Lenten productive
for others as well as our-
selves.
The money I save from
dieting I can give to help feed
the world's hungry through
my Church World Relief and
Development Fund. In
changing some of my bad
habits into better ones, the
money I save can be shared
with others less fortunate.
than I, through the many
Christian and humanitarian
programs available.
And I must judge how much
of my "recreation" time is
really "re -creative", and
plan to use it in more
productive ways in improving
my own life, and other
people's, spiritually and
physically.
So, "giving up" things for
Lent means doing more for
Christ. It can mean a fuller,
more productive existence
for all of us. Itfollows 'Jesus
into the "more abundant life"
which He brings. (St. John
10:10)

Author Joyce Landoll tells
,the story of a little boy
showing his friend the
doormat in front of his house
with "Welcome" written on
it. Pointing to it, the little
fellow says, "That's the first
thing I learned to read,. It
says, 'Wipe Your Feet!'
It reminds her, -she says, of
all the times we say one thing
but communicate quite
another.
For instance we may tell
our child, "Pick up your
clothes; , your roam is a
mess!" What we are com-
municating is, "You're so
dumb! How long am I going
to have to tell you these
things?" We can say, "Hello,
how are you?, but com-
municate by our tone, "I
really don't have time to
listen." Or, we can purr,
"Darling, you do it this way,"
when all the time we're
saying,"Stupid!"
Some people claim only
seven percent of what we
communicate is verbal: The
rest lies in such • things as
vocal pitch, inflections and
facial expression.
To be a good 'com-
municator' takes a lot of
practiceand serious thought.
A few weeks ago, I sat in on
a seminrr on Communication
and we were told there are
three parts to com-
municating: 1. talking, 2.
listening and 3. un-
derstanding. •
Many people like the
'talking' part best and about
the only time anyone else
around them gets a chance to
speak is when they stop for
breath. The sad thing is that
most of these compulsory
talkers go on and on without
saying anything very im-
portant.
We must train our tongues.
St. James likens the tongue to
a bucking bronco or wild
ood µcam
mu11ic
horse Out, of control or a shark
that can starta mighty fire
leaving only carnage in its
wake. We can build people up
or tear them down with our
tongues. We can wound or we
can soothe.
The listening part of
communication is just as
important and just as much
work as talking. We are told
we hear only about 20 percent
of what is said to us. This -is
because we 'don't really
listen. We need to learn to
talk less and listen more.
Someone has pointed out God
gave us two ears and only one
mouth!
'. Sensitive listening is ac-
tively caring about, w hat
another person is saying and
surely this is one of the most
important things needed in
our society. Perhaps, like
King Solomon, we need to
pray for 'listening hearts'.
Which brings up the third
part of communication:
understanding. We need to
train ourselves to took behind
the thought expressed in the
words people say to us. Our
seminar leader stated, "We
must stop being so prickly
and instead of becoming
defensive about something
someone has said to us, we
need to look beyond at what
the person is really saying
and why."
I imagine 99 percent of us
would say we want to com-
municate with those around
us and yet, we constantly set
up roadblocks to hinder it. We'
don't allow people to share
their feelings often because
we can't take the risk of
having them expose them-
selves. We become defensive
and put others down. We
provoke guilt in people by L.
saying such things as ""It's all
your fault..." We can*snake
communication difficult by
trying to keep the peace at
any pride and thus build, up
resentments, Some of us are
great at second "guessing
others (especially our
spouses or children) ' and
finish .their sentences for
them. And, as stated before,
we can dominate the whole
conversation and thus
hamper communication.
Another block to com-
munication is anger. There
are three ways in dealing
with anger: Suppress it and
get ulcers; express it end
give other people ulcers and
confess it (to God and the
other person) and get it out in
the open where it can be
aired.
This brings us back to the j
beginning to Joyce Landorf's
story. It would probably be a
lot better if instead of saying,
"Welcome';
read, Please
Feet', Because;'
loving honesty
