The big news in local
curling this past week was the
victory of two rinks from
Goderich in the Division 13
playdowns of the Silver
Tankard Competition in
Meaford on March 20, 1977.
The rinks of Cam Bogie with
Ron Klages, Jack MacKinnon
and Denis Lebrun combined
with Tom Jasper's rink- of
Don Tremeer, Jamieson
Ribey and Bill Finlayson
defeated two rinks from
Wiarton 16-12.
These curlers as winners of
Division. 13 will meet the
Divisional winners from
Zones 19, 15, and 16 to
determine the regional
representatives in the
Provincial finals. The
regidnal playdowns will be
held in Wiarton on March 25,
and the finals will be held in
Gravenhurst on March 26. .....,
In the regional competition
two games are played. If a
team wins both their games
they advance to the finals. If
they lose their first game they
enter the Tankard Secondary
Competition for the Burden
Trophy and if they win their
second game they advance to
the finals in this competition.
Winners of their first game
and - losers of their second
game are out of both, com-
petitions.
BONSPIEL NEWS
The highlight of the week
for the Ladies Curling was the
Art's Landscaping Bonspiel
held op March, 16, 1977.
Everyone participating
received a plant from Art's
which was appreciated by all '
cprlers.
The winner of the first draw
was a Goderich rink•of Sylvia
Bolan, Jean McGee, Naitcy
MacLennan and Marg deBolt.
Second place went to the
Goderich rink of Phyl Durst
with .Lois Vanstone, Bernice
Moore and Eleanor Fisher.
Third place went to Joan
Ritchie's Stratford rink and
fourth place went to Win
Marshall's Exeter rink.
The winner of the second
draw and overall winner was
Doris Paquette's Goderich
rink composed of Eleanor
Erskine, Lynn Edward and
Kay Duncan. Second place
was won by Sheila Taylor's
Kincardine rink, third place
by LQis Hayter's Seaforth
rink and fourth place by
Evelyn Seamon's
Southampton rink. The draw
for an Afghan won by Donna
Krueger from Mitchell,
Ontario.
The Ladies Curling Section
would like to thank Art's
Landscaping and Nursery for
sponsoring this , enjoyable
event. A great time was had
by all.
On March 19, four Goderich
Men's rinks travelled to
Vanastra to compete in a
bonspiel sponsored by Green
and Parent.
Winner of the first draw
Curlers hunt for _playoff positions
With only one week left in
the regular season just two
playoff positions are settled.
There is a strong possibility
of two three-way ties for the
remaining six teams.
The Assessment Team
increased their first place
record to 15 wins and only two
losses, both to the DRMCo
plant squad, by defeating the
Financial Office 9 to 3. Vice -
skip Greg Hanson curled
expertly for the Assessment
men especially in the late
going. Jim Be11, Ken Fagan
and skip Dennis Lebrun were
all sharp and are looking
forward to the hunt for
trophies in the playoffs.
Financial skip, Larry
McGrath was not upset by his
defeat since his team is in
fifth spot an, ._is a good bet to
win the "B" Division of the
playoffs.
At the other end of the
scale, the surprising and
ever-changing Kinsmen
Team upset the second place
Victoria and Grey team 10 to
8 in a wild game that
produced two five -enders.
Kinsmen skip Cloet was
outstanding as he led the
threesome of Arnie Parker,
John Schneiker and Doug
Bundy to their third victory of
the season. Once again the V
& G team showed their class
as they fought back from a 7-3
deficit to take a temporary 8-
7 lead and then lose it in the
eighth end as the Kinsmen
scored three big ones. Brenda
Fisher, Mary Weatherby,
Hugh Doggett and Steve
Williard .made up the V & G
team.
The powerful DRMCo.
Plant team won their seventh
game in a row defeating
Teacher No. 2 Team 8-9. This
excellent string of victories
moves the Plant team into a
hunt for second place and sets
up a classic showdown next
week between V & G and
DRMCo. Plant for that
position with Teacher No. 2
team holding the final playoff
spot in the "A" Division. Skip
Glen Falkiner had a fine
evening for the DRMCo.
Plant team but the best man
on the ice was Charlie
Crawford as he shot and
swept his .way to a superb
night of curling. Teacher skip
Bev Lindsay had a few bad
breaks in the early ends and
then the precise shooting of
the surging DRMCo. men
kept their victory streak
intact.
In a very close match it is
usually the skip who makes
the difference between vic-
tory and defeat. DRMCo.
Office skip, Bill Hayward
demonstrated this axiom
Thursday night as he curled
an excellent tactical contest
which resulted in an 8-5 extra
end victory for his team over
the Teacher No. 3 team.
In the extra end, teacher
vice -skip :.Diane Verhoef
made a super take out and
freeze shot and it looked like
the slumping Teacher No. 3

Saturday was won by the team of five shown above, I to r: Ted.Flemming, Stratford K of

team might squeeze out a
win. Unfortunately for the
teachers, Skip Hayward had
last shot and he finished off a
sensational night with a first
rate shot which counted three
extra end points and clinched
a well deserved triumph for
the Office gentlemen.
Hayward had excellent
support from Dave' Million,
Barry Page and Jim Bolan
while Del Almeida was
outstanding for the unlucky
Teacher team.

draw.
In the second draw Gerry
Walter's , rink of Don
Tremeer, Des Cassidy and
Don Taylor lost a heart-
breaker . in an extra end of
their third game which
denied them first place and
they had to settle for third
place. Good fortune did not
follow the fourth rink of Jim
Hawkins, Ivan Rivett, Tom
Moore and Fred Crawford as
they failed to place in the
prizes.
On March 12, a Mixed
Team from Goderich com-
posed of Len and Eileen
Bowman with Tom and Betty
Moore won first place in their
draw in a Bonspiel in
Seaforth.
