The Suns won the opening
game in Hanover last Wed-
nesday night by a 3-1 score
and then squeaked out a 4-3
overtime victory in game
two, played at Vanastra

Lions roar into YCW semi-final
by Randy Hardlsty
It was the battle of the
goalies in a game between
Goderich and Mooretown
Saturday afternoon with
Goderich coming out on top.
The score was two to one
for Goderich but it could have
been Mooretown's game had
it not been for the spectacular
performance of Jeff
Denomme, the Goderich
goaltender.
Goderich opened the
scoring at 1:25 of the first
period when Darrell Graham
ptook a pass from Joey
-Morrissey. Graham faked a
shot which drew the
Mooretown goalie out of the
net and he put a wrist shot
into an open corner.
Mooretown tied the game at
8:34 of the period when Dave
Jackson rifled the puck past
the Goderich defender. Mark
Hillier picked up the assist on
the only shot to get by
Denomme all day.
Denomme constantly made
key saves throughout the
remainder of the period to
keep Goderich in the game. •
The winning goal for
Goderich came at 2:49 of the
second period when Scott
Ross got a breakaway. The
Mooretown goalie came out of
the net to cut down on the
angle and Ross slid the puck
underneath the goaltender.
Colin Alexander got the
assist.
The fans weren't too
pleased when Goderich got.a
goal that was disallowed but
the official's whistle had

shot that the Mooretown
players could get on hime.

hard hitting, non-stop game.

figure on the ice for his team
was the goalie, Jeff

victory. 0
Following the game, the
Victoria and Grey Trust
trophy was presented to Sun's
captain Daryl Madge by the
company's local manager, Al
Weatherby. This is the second
year in a row that the Suns
have been consolation
champions of the WOAA. Two
years ago, the Suns were
Grand Champions.
Hanover was a tight one,
despite the three game sweep
by the Suns, as each game
was up for grabs right 'til the
end. The two teams had
finished with an equal
number of points in the
regular schedule, but
Goderich took second place
.Jby virtue of a better, won -lost
record in games between the
two teams. The Suns took
three of their four regular -
season meetings with
Hanover.
Last Wednesday in
Hanover, the Suns skated
hard and passed the puck well
enroute to winning the series
opener. Grant Garrow had a
goal and two assists for the
Suns and John Thompson and
Daryl Madge each scored
singles for the Suns, who led
3-0 late in the third period.
With only two and a half
minutes remaining in the
game, the puck bounced off a
Goderich player in front of his
own net and trickled into the
corner of the goal for
Hanover's only tally. The
goal was credited to Hanover
captain Chris Ahrens.
Saturday's victory came on
the strength of an overtime
goal scored by the Sun's John
Thompson, after Ahrens had
prolonged the game with the
tying goat late in the third
period. Goals by Thompson
and Daryl Madge had .given
the Suns an early lead before
Brent Long got -one back for
Hanovekr, just before the end
of the second period. Madge's
second goal of the game
restored the Sun's two goal
lead but Phil Corkin scored
for Hanover, setting up
Ahrens tie -maker. Scott
Stokes and Trevor Erb each
assisted on one Goderich
goal.
On Sunday, the Suns out-
scored Hanover 2-1 in each of
the second and third periods,.
following a scoreless first
frame. Daryl Madge had
three goals and an assist in
leading the Suns to victory.
Grant Garrow scored the
other Goderich goal. John
Thompson and Rob Gibbons
had assists for Goderich.
In the lineup for the con-
solation championship -
winning Suns were Daryl
Madge (captain), John
Thompson and Steve Sinclair
