succeed in the tournament.
"I just can't say enough
about these guys and the way
they played all week,"
Williams said. "They skated
like they have never skated
before, they checked and
everyone played his best to
win the tournament."
The team recorded four
wins . and one tie in winning
the gold medal in their
division, and won their final
game 2-0 over Rapperswil,
Switzerland, the same team
they defeated 3-1 in their first
tournament game.
Williams remarked on the
physical fitness of the Swiss
team and how they marvelled
at the Canadian players late
night tactics.
"The Swisstearn went to
bed early every night and we
sat up at night and drank bud
we sure showed them how to
play hockey."
Mayor Deb Shewfelt paid
respects to the team and
welcomed them home on
behalf of the town.
"We now have a world
championship hockey team
and what a helluva way 41'
kick off a birthday party," he,
said. ` "We are extremely
proud ofthis oldtimer team
and they have brought hockey r.
back to Goderich."
The Oldtimers put on an
impressive style of dogged
defensive play and allowed,
only five goals against in
their five tournament games.
Team members skated on
youthful legs and their
gentlemanly conduct and
style of play made them a
favorite of fans and teams
alike.
Goderich defeated the
Rapperswil Oldtimers in
their first game 3-1 and knew
from that point they were
destined for a medal.
En route to the final they
defeated Summerside 5-1,
Morpeth 2-1, 'and tied St. John
2-2. In the final they defeated
Rapperswil for .the second
time, 2-0.
Gold medalists jubilant on return

Town councillors quietly
voted themselves a raise
Monday evening. There
wasn't a single comment
from anyone concerning the
motion brought forward by
the Finance Chairman,
Reeve Bill Clifford.
The raise at 5.5 percent
brings the 'salary for
municipal councillors,
deputy -reeve and reeve in
Goderich to $2850 from $2700
per annum. The mayor's
salary increases from $5,400
to $5,697.
The increase is effective
April 1, 1977 to cover the
balance of the current council
term, until the end of
December, 1978. It will not be
retroactive to January 1,
1977.
In other finance committee
business, the present position
of the building inspector, Roy
Breckenridge, has been
reclassified. Breckenridge's
department will• become
known as the building and
planning department, and
Breckenridge will be the
building and planning officer.
The building and planning
officer's responsibilities will
include the building in-
spector's duties, secretary of
the planning board, secretary
of the Housing Action
Committee and other related
duties pertaining to his office.
Annual salary for this
position will be $12,476 plus
car allowance.
In speaking to the
recommendation, Chairman
Clifford said Breckenridge •
had previously been doing all
these different municipal
tasks, but now with the
reclassification "it becomes
part of the job".
PUBLIC BUDGET
MEETINGS
Council is moving to budget
time, and meetings are set to
begin Monday, March 28 at
7:30 p.rn. and Wednesday,
April 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the
council chambers to hammer
out the town's expenditures
for the year.
These meetings are open to
the public and citizens of
Goderich are cordially in-
vited to attend the sessions to
see just how municipal
dollars are to be spent in 1977.
Deputy -clerk Larry
McCabe said the school levy
in Goderich is up by about
$175,000, representing a 24
percent increase over last
year.
Tenders were opened at
Monday's meeting for gravel.
The lowest tender was ac-
cepted, that submitted by
Sandy Contracting for
$18,130.
Councillor John Doherty
asked the property com-
mittee if the lowest tender
had been accepted for the
painting which is currently
underway at the town office.
He was assured by Chairman
Bob Allen and Deputy -reeve
Eileen Palmer that the Willie
Pederson tender was $200
.5% sairse
below the next highest tender,
and nearly $2,000 less than a
third tender.
BEACH BOUTIQUE
Mrs. Mary Lee James has
been granted the town's
permission to construct a
temporary building on the
beach which will be used by
her as a boutique. Mrs.
James was the proprietor of
the boutique in the O'Brien
Building on The Square which
was burned recently.
The building, about 8 feet
by 10 feet, will be constructed
at Mrs. James' expense with
the understanding that she
will receive no exclusive
vendor's rights as she had
requested. She will pay the
town $100 in advance, will
keep the general area around
the boutique clean at all
times, and all expenses in-
curred on the premises will
be paid by Mrs. James.
The business will open May
21 and will remain open until
Labbr Day. The agreement is
for 1977 only.
,Besides the usual boutique
merchandise, clothing,
jewellery, crafts and
souvenirs, Mrs. James will
display' tourist material
promoting the town, and will
make a bulletin board
available for this type of
news.
