Williams remarked on the physical fitness of the Swiss team and how they marvelled at the Canadian players late night tactics. "The Swisstearn went to bed early every night and we sat up at night and drank bud we sure showed them how to play hockey." Mayor Deb Shewfelt paid respects to the team and welcomed them home on behalf of the town. "We now have a world championship hockey team and what a helluva way 41' kick off a birthday party," he, said. ` "We are extremely proud ofthis oldtimer team and they have brought hockey r. back to Goderich." The Oldtimers put on an impressive style of dogged defensive play and allowed, only five goals against in their five tournament games. Team members skated on youthful legs and their gentlemanly conduct and style of play made them a favorite of fans and teams alike. Goderich defeated the Rapperswil Oldtimers in their first game 3-1 and knew from that point they were destined for a medal. En route to the final they defeated Summerside 5-1, Morpeth 2-1, 'and tied St. John 2-2. In the final they defeated Rapperswil for .the second time, 2-0. The team racked up four victories and one tie in winning the gold medal in their' division at the second annual European Inter- national Oldtimers Hockey Tournament in Zurich, Switzerland. There wasn't a single comment from anyone concerning the motion brought forward by the Finance Chairman, Reeve Bill Clifford. The raise at 5.5 percent brings the 'salary for municipal councillors, deputy -reeve and reeve in Goderich to $2850 from $2700 per annum. The mayor's salary increases from $5,400 to $5,697. The increase is effective April 1, 1977 to cover the balance of the current council term, until the end of December, 1978. It will not be retroactive to January 1, 1977. In other finance committee business, the present position of the building inspector, Roy Breckenridge, has been reclassified. Breckenridge's department will• become known as the building and planning department, and Breckenridge will be the building and planning officer. The building and planning officer's responsibilities will include the building in- spector's duties, secretary of the planning board, secretary of the Housing Action Committee and other related duties pertaining to his office. Annual salary for this position will be $12,476 plus car allowance. In speaking to the recommendation, Chairman Clifford said Breckenridge • had previously been doing all these different municipal tasks, but now with the reclassification "it becomes part of the job". PUBLIC BUDGET MEETINGS Council is moving to budget time, and meetings are set to begin Monday, March 28 at 7:30 p.rn. and Wednesday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the council chambers to hammer out the town's expenditures for the year. These meetings are open to the public and citizens of Goderich are cordially in- vited to attend the sessions to see just how municipal dollars are to be spent in 1977. Deputy -clerk Larry McCabe said the school levy in Goderich is up by about $175,000, representing a 24 percent increase over last year. Tenders were opened at Monday's meeting for gravel. The lowest tender was ac- cepted, that submitted by Sandy Contracting for $18,130. Councillor John Doherty asked the property com- mittee if the lowest tender had been accepted for the painting which is currently underway at the town office. He was assured by Chairman Bob Allen and Deputy -reeve Eileen Palmer that the Willie Pederson tender was $200 .5% sai�rse below the next highest tender, and nearly $2,000 less than a third tender. BEACH BOUTIQUE Mrs. Mary Lee James has been granted the town's permission to construct a temporary building on the beach which will be used by her as a boutique. Mrs. James was the proprietor of the boutique in the O'Brien Building on The Square which was burned recently. The building, about 8 feet by 10 feet, will be constructed at Mrs. James' expense with the understanding that she will receive no exclusive vendor's rights as she had requested. She will pay the town $100 in advance, will keep the general area around the boutique clean at all times, and all expenses in- curred on the premises will be paid by Mrs. James. The business will open May 21 and will remain open until Labbr Day. The agreement is for 1977 only. ,Besides the usual boutique merchandise, clothing, jewellery, crafts and souvenirs, Mrs. James will display' tourist material promoting the town, and will make a bulletin board available for this type of news.
