AUBURN AND DISTRICT NEWS
Water, water and more
water was the complaint of
most households in the village
on Saturday night as most
basements were flooded.
Some furnaces were out
before the residents knew
they had water in their
basements.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas
Haggitt returned last Sunday
from a bus trip to Florida for
two weeks.
Several from here attended
the Broomball dance at Blyth
last Saturday at the new
Blyth arena hall.
Mrs. Harry Arthur
returned on Sunday from a
two week's bus trip to
Florida. he was ac-
companied by her parents
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Keller of
Dublin.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert J.
Craig of Lucan visited on
Sunday with his father Mr.
William J. Craig and his aunt,
Mrs. Bell Allen.
Congratulations to Miss
RUth Peck, a student at the
University of Western
Ontario on being the winner
of five scholarships. Ruth is
the daughter of Mr. and Mrs,
Robert H. Peck and is a third
year student in actuarial
mathematics last year.
Among the awards she has
won are the Edna Jeffrey
scholarship' ' for computer -
science, the International
Timken Fund scholarship for
mathematics, a Huron
County scholarship, the
London Life Actuarial
scholarship and the Board of
Governors C-o-ntinuing
scholarship. She has written
her first exam and has one
more year to go to complete
her course'. When finished she
will pursue a career in the
insurance field as an actuary.
Mr. and Mrs. Peck are well
known, in the Auburn area
having moved here from near
Windsor last spring.
Mrs. Kenneth McDougall
visited recently with her
brother, Mr. Stewart Toll,
Mrs, Toll, Warren and Terry
at London.
Relatives and friends from
this community attended the
Golden Wedding celebrations
for Mr. and Mrs. Wilmer
Nicholson in Goderich last
weekend. Congratulations to
the Nicholsons who were
formerly Auburn residents.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Johnston
and Jennifer of London
visited her parents Mr. and
Mrs. Wilfred Sanderson on
the weekend.
Over 20 ladies attended the
Quilt course last Monday in
the Auburn Community
Memorial hall and all enjoyed
the first class. Another class
will be held as soon as more
books come.
The Pancake Brunch put on
by. the Members of the
Auburn Snowmobile Club was
a success last Sunday. Due to
the sudden change in weather
no other clubs could attend on
their machines.

euchre party held in the
Auburn Community
Memorial hall were Novelty -

that Bob Powell was able to
come home last Thursday
after being a patient in

Hospital, Goderich.
Mrs. Dorothy
returned home last week
after several weeks holidays
spent in the Southern States
and Mexico.

4-H CLUB
The third meeting of the
Auburn 1-4-H club was held at
the home of Mrs. John
Hildebrand. The president,
Kim McDowell opened the
meeting with the Pledge
followed by the minutes read
by, Carol Seers. The roll ,call
was answered by giving one
-.point to remember when
cutting and marking a fabric.
Sherry and Nancy Verbeek
were named the telephone
committee. The girls named
their club -Bobbin Bumblers
strikes again. Mrs. Cart-
wright and Mrs. Hildebrand
demonstrated and the girls
worked on their samples of
seams.

• MISSIONARY SOCIETY
The March meeting of the
Auburn Presbyterian
Women's Missionary Society
was held last Wednesday
evening at the home of the
president Mrs. Wilfred
Sanderson. She opened the
meeting( with the call to
worship followed by the hymn
- All Hail the Power of Jesus'
Name. She welcomed all and
Miss Winnie Wagner was in
•charge of the devotions.
The scripture lesson,
Psalm 46 was read followed
by a meditation on House
Plants as related to the
scripture passage. The roll
call was answered by quoting

'Mrs. Wes Ironed
a Bible verse containing the
word - Praise. The minutes
were read by the secretary
Miss Minnie Wagner. Plans
were made to attend the
London Synodical to be held
in St. Andrew's Presbyterian
Church Stratford.,en April 12
and 13. An invitation to attend
the Good Friday service at
Knox United Church was
accepted and a card of thanks
was read from the Wagner
Family. A donation was made
to the Knox Presbyterian
Church Memorial Fund in
memory of the late William
Wagner.
The study for the evening
was taken by Mrs. Frances
Clark. She chose a pre -Easter
message - the meaning of
Lent, Ash Wednesday and the
challenge it holds for all
Christians today. The
financial statement was
given by the treasurer, Mrs.
Frances Clark, and the
meeting was closed with the
hymn, 0 Lord how happy we
should beand the benediction
VILLAGE COUNCIL
The Village Trustees of
Auburn met in the Town hall
last Saturday evening.
Chairman Warner Andrews
presided.
The matter of dogs running
at large in the village was
discussed and reports
received in the process of
dealing with them. The
surrounding Townships are
cooperating in this problem.
The Trustees will receive 20
cents per mile for the use of
their cars in looking after
Village business. There will
be no allowance for personal
time and work for the Village.
There was a report that
some of the village drains
were not working properly,
and these will be in-
vestigated. It was passed that
the bill of $1250.00 for the
Blyth District Fire Area, be
paid. Some progress was
reported in the matter of
changing the street lights.
The investigation will con-
tinue. Anyone having any
suggestions for these, please
pass them on to the Trustees.
UNITED CHURCH WOMEN
The United Church Women
held their annual Family
Night last Friday evening in
the Sunday school room of the
church. Approximately 75
persons enjoyed a pot -luck
smorgasbord supper with
Unit Two Ladies in charge.

entertainment commencing
with a sing -song of old
favorite songs led by Mrs.
Earl St. Jean.
The Young People
presented a humorous skit.'
Those taking part were
Marilyn Wightman, Anita
Hallam, Sherry Verbeek,
Paul Ambrose, David Durnin,
Greg Hallam and Andrew
Koopmans. Crokinole and
scrabble games were enjoyed
making an evening of fun and
fellowship for both young and
old.

Married 45 years
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Walter, RR 4 Goderich, celebrated
their 45th wedding anniversary February 27 at home.
The couple have five children, including three sons, Bill
at home; Roy and Alvert at RR 4 Goderich; and two
daughters, Mrs. Bill (Irma) Phillip, RR 7 Lucknow, and
Mrs. Keith (June) Camplin, Collingwood.^There are 10
grandchildren. Joining the family for the celebration was
Mrs. Walter's sister, Mrs. Ethel Stewart, Goderich.
