This area is bounded by the west side of Victoria Street on the east; the north side of Elgin Ave. en the south; the east side of Waterloo Street on the west: and the south side of ,Nelson Street on the north. The study is being carried out in conjunction with the local branch of the Ontario Heritage Foundation. - Goderich Town Council Briefs Budget time for Goderich Town Council is getting near and at Monday evening's meeting, town administrator Hal Walls said work should begin in earnest on the budget by the end of the month' "By that time we should have a rough picture of where we are headed," he said. He also urged council to work towards collecting the nelct installment of taxes earlier than last year. "We need the cash flow'. Walls said. +++ 'Road conditions throughout the town were the topic when Public Works Foreman Stan Meriam appeared before town council Monday evening with his monthly report. Councillor Stan Profit questioned him concerning South Street, south of Bennett Street. "It is virtually im- passable", said Profit. Meriam admitted the street was in bad shape, but said the works department had dumped 15 loads of gravel on it earlier in the day. "It is about all we can do".; said Meriam who reminded Profit the street is slated for improvements. - Meriam said the winter had been hard on the roads in Goderich and added the crew was doing its best to make them as good as possible under the prevailing con- ditions. + +"+ William Mclsaac, Goderich, has been " the successful applicant from among 25 persons .who ap- plied for the job which `will provide six months em- ployment at the marina and six months employment at the arena. His salary will be $10,000 per an um. There will be a six . hs 'probation period after which, if satisfactory, his salary would be increased by $500 per annum. Councillor John Doherty asked if his probation period would extend over a trial at each job, but he was told this wouldn't be the case. + + + + In perusing the minutes of the Goderich Tourist Com- m ittee, ommittee, Councillor Elsa Haydon wondered if the town would be in for another "flashing monstrosity" during the summer festivities.. She referred to a decision by the committee to look into the possibility of renting mobile lighted flashing signs to ensure the most effective detailing of special Jubilee Three events to the motoring public. Chairman Mac' Campbell is to look after the matter. Mrs. Haydon felt signs should be erected on the town's boulevards only in consultation with the traffic committee, and in the town's parks after consultation with the parks committee. "I'd hesitate to approve this, knowing the parks chairman's closed mind on the matter," said tCouncillor Stan Profit. (Councillor Haydon is Parks Chairman.) "I'm sure the tourist committee will act in a proper manner," said Profit. 'Councillor Haydon 'said there had been. a "public outcry" two years ago when a flashing sign advertising the gaol had been erected on Highway 21. Councillor Don Wheeler said it was his understanding these would be portable signs erected for "special" events and for that day". "They are not permanent signs that should foul up anybody's jurisdiction," said Wheeler: +++ fhe following are council briefs intended for last week's edition: New parking regulations in some areas of town were approved by town council. Parking will be prohibited on the west - side of North Street from the north edge of the alley leading to Church Street' to the south edge of Nelson Street; on the north side of Napier Street between Victoria Street and Cambria Road; on the north side of Newgate Street between Hamilton Street and Victoria Street; on the north side of St. David Street from Kingston Street to a point 37 feet easterly. Traffic Committee Chair- man John Doherty dis- played a chart:: kept by Police Chief Pat King which ; ;1'; I. showed the location of 'ac- cidents on The Square during the past few years which had been caused directly because of vehicles backing from parked positl ns on the outer circle into the traffic lanes. "The majority of these accidents occur in close proximity to the streets radiating from The Square," the report stated. "The Square is the only area where vehicles are allowed to park within 20 feet of an -in- tersection. "The vehicle parked in the first position to the right of any street intersection with The Square doers constitute a potential, hazard, in thatit increases the chances of a vehicle turning onto The Square, being struck by a vehicle reversing from'Qne of the angle parking positions," the report went on.
