MARCEM: 9t t • 11 Aircraft promised for '77 festivities A delegation from the Goderich Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion recently visited the Canadian Warplane Heritage Foun- dation Museum at Mount Hope, Ontario, and as a result museum officials have promised aircraft for the Jubilee Three air, show this summer - Exhibits at the museum actually fly under Transport Canada certificates of air `worthiness. Military aircraft currently flying from their collection include a B 24 Mitchell bomber, a `Fairey Firefly, Harvards, a Tiger Moth, and a Corsair made famous to a new generation by the television program Baa Baa Black Sheep. The foundation recently obtained status as a Canadian Government Foundation Museum and now con- centrates on Canadian built warplanes. This type of flying museum is unusual as there are only two other in.the world, one in England and one in Texas. Canadian builts, at present flying, are four Harvards and one Tiger Moth. Under restoration at various stages are a Canadian Avro Anson, a Fairchild Cornell, a Lysander, a Bolingbroke and a Hurricane of which there is only one other in'the world. Currently the museum is Dip and dive Swing your partner. The Grade 3 pupils of Victoria Public school entertained the Grades one and two classes last Friday afternoon with a sampling of country dancing. (staff photo) sx Costly transition to offset Few newspapers printed at home When residents of rural, or small town, Western Ontario pick up their local weekly newspaper chances are that the publications has travelled a good many more miles than that reader might think. The edition may be 'hot off the presses' but that press was not likely located in the community where the newspaper is published. Publishing, and actual printing, have become two distinctly different processes with the advent of web -offset printing. Gone are the days of the ink -smeared back room at the local newspaper housing a sheet fed press on which the local journal was produced. The news is still gathered and written in that office, the advertisen\ents sold and designed there, and the pages are even composed there, but actual printing likely takes place in one of four modern plants in Western Ontario. Community Impressions Limited at Durham print nine community newspapers including their own Durham Chronicle; Signal Star Publishing Limited in Goderich prints about 25 weeklies including the Goderich Signal Star; Webco Limited of London print another 25; Sheldon Press in Shelburne print six different weeklies; and Fairway Press Limited of Kitchener serve 15 weekly newspaper printing customers. The 'vastly improved quality of production offered by web -offset technology started the move away from older methods in the early 1960s. In a very few years that dribble of papers trying to improve their quality became a tide flowing out to larger printing plants. Primarily the cause was economic. According to Signal Star Publishing Limited production manager John Buchanan the cost of up- dating, all investment necessary to maintain a competitive stance, was "astronomical". The installation of new presses, and all the related equipment needed to make them work, became 'a multi- million dollar deal. The press at Goderich is valued at about $230,000 and, while large, is no record setter in terms of size, capability or cost. Most local newspapers did invest in new compositing equipment to set their type, Pro -Life concert planned for Mar.17 The Goderich and District Pro Life Group met at the former St. Elizabeth School on February 22. President Gordon Crabb chaired the meeting. • One of the main items on the agenda was the St. Patrick's Variety Concert. This will be presented at Goderich District Collegiate Institute on March 17. The committee members in charge of the event are Gordon Crabb, Mary Clare, Pat Howard and Connie Osborn. Performer and M.C. Seamus Doherty promises a wide variety of events suitable for the whole family. It was decided by the Pro Life Group td obtain a copy of the Bagdley Report which has recently been made public. The Bagdley Committee was set up after the historic event on May 29, 1975, when over one million signatures were Perform a death -defying act. Give Heart Fund. Give Heart Fund 1? f 1 Phone W. J. The petition asked that the pre born child be given the same protection by legislation as any other person. and in line -cameras to prepare their publications for the big plants. A large enough investment at $15-$20,000 but not nearly so large as having to buy the most expensive component, the press itself. So, gone are the days of hot lead type; here are the days o of cold type and photo composition. Ther ult has been a better produc better service , to newspaper readers, and a time saving for newspaper publishers. A web -offset press can turn out . an average weekly newspaper, folded and ready for mailing in about 30 minutes. With sheet -fed presses that same newspaper would be 14 to 16 hours in the printing stage and would then, in many cases, have to be folded forI-nailing by hand. The local newspaper can leave its home -office, travel to the central printing plant and return in printed form in less time than it took to print it at home. In Huron Bruce, the majority of the newspapers are printed by Signal Star Publishing in Goderich. These include the Brussels Post, Blyth Standard, Clinton News Record, Goderich Signal Star, Kincardine News, Lucknow Sentinel, Mildmay Town and Country Crier, Huron Expositor, Teeswater News, Walkerton Herald Times, Wiarton Echo and Wingham Advance Times. The Chesley Enterprise is published at Durham, the Hanover Post is one of the few papers still operating its own shop, the Kincardine Independent is printed in Durham as is the Paisley Advocate, the Port ' Elgin Reporter, and the Tara Leader. The Zurich Citizens News is printed by Webco in London.
