THURSDAY, MARCH 10. 1977 Jeff Baechler of GDCI Vikings keeps close watch on a Stratford forward in the Huron -Perth championship game Tuesday. The Vikings hosted the Ramblers in the second end of the series in Goderich starting the game with an eight point edge after winning the opener in Stratford 46-38. Iain Lambert dealt the hot hand for the Vikings in their barn burner at home. Lambert was swishing long, outside shots and led the Vikings scorers with a 12 point afternoon. Dave MacKenzie added another 11 points, three of them from the line, and Jon Barz added three baskets and five free throws to the Viking total. Jeff Baechler scored five. Viking coach Phil Bugler said he didn't feel his Vikings were outgunned by the Ramblers despite being on the bottom end of Tuesday's score. He said his players went into the game with a lead that tended to give them a psychological lift the coach could do nothing about. "They went into the game thinking they had it won and were tending to rest on their lead," he said, "I tried to beat it but you just can't." Coach Bugler regards Stratford Central as one of the better basketball clubs in this part of Ontario and says he wouldn't be surprised if the Vikings faced the Ramblers in W.O.S.S.A. action this weekend. The Vikings head into • the zone finals in St. Thomas and with three wins could have a berth in All -Ontario cham- pionships. They play their first game 5:30 Friday night and if they win they play at 1:30 Saturday afternoon and play the final at 8:30 Saturday night. The Ramblers were up three after one quarter, led by one at the half and had surrendered their lead by the end of the third and were down three. In the fourth they threw caution to the wind and started to push , hard to overcome a five point margin the Vikings enjoyed in the game. The Ramblers started taking intentional fouls to stop the clock and sent the Vikings to the line 10 times in their desperation moves. Viking coach Bugler said he didn't feel his players choked under the pressure despite their missing several easy layups in close. He said the pressure was all on Goderich not the Ramblers. "They had nothing to lose and they started firing everything," he said. "Our boys were trying too hard to sink theirs and were off their game." Despite - their lack of scoring punch the Vikings held the Ramblers in check defensively very effectively.. Greg Beacom, normally a 20 point scorer, didn't get on, the board:in Tuesday's game but did chip in with 11 rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots. Fellow guard Bill Gauley added another three rebounds on missed Stratford shots and Jeff Baechler hauled down four. Dick Newberry led the Vikings drop junior final by T.D. The GDCI Junior Vikings were edged 62-57 in Stratford Tuesday and lost the two game total point Huron -Perth junior boys- basketball championship with the Stratford Central Ramblers 114-103. The Vikings still have a shot at some basketball honers as they head into W.O.S.S.A. finals Friday and Saturday in St. Thomas. The Vikings started the second game down six points after droppingthe front end of the series 52-46 here in Goderich. Despite the deficit Viking coach Lynn Meyers was confident his club could take the undefeated Stratford Central Ramblers if they came up with a strong team effort for the entire game. Goderich stayed neck and neck with Stratford in the second game and led by one at the end of the first half. With nine seconds to go Stratford held a three point edge in the game and nine on the series and grabbed a last second basket to take the series with an 11 point margin. Dennis Donnelly was the big gun for the juniors netting,, 16 points. Andy Moore chipped in with another 14 and Mark Alexander got eight, The Vikings play their first game in the single ERIC CARMAN PHOTOGRAPHY 114 THE SQUARE is pleased to announce "WEDDING COVERAGE i AS LOW AS 90• I i l i j We have added a budget 1 priced album to our complete j line of photographic services with in. and discuss yourdayN. 3L elimination W.O.S.S.A. tournament Friday night at 7:00 in St. Thomas against Petrolia, the number one club from„ the Lambton con- ference. The Stratford Central Ramblers overcame the GDCI Vikings home -court advantage` here last Thur- sday winning the first game of their two -game total -point Huron -Perth junior finals, 52- 46. The game was close throughout, with the Ram- blers holding a 29-26 lead at' halftime. A defensive battle r 1t i$ A developed that was virtually a draw over the course of the game. Offensively, the Ramblers boasted a little more shooting ability than the Vikings, accounting for their six point edge. Going into Tuesday's second game in Stratford, GDCI coach Lynn Meyers anticipated another defensive battle, and felt his Vikings were quite capable of win- ning. The Vikings did hold the lead in the first game until mid way through the second quarter when Stratford took WE'RE HAVING A over and led 29-26 at half- time. Central, which went: 10 straight games without a loss in the Conference's, regular season, was led in scoring by Rick Erb's 20 points- in the first game of -the finals. Dennis Donnelly, with 15 points, and Don Bogie, with 14, were the leading Viking scorers. Mark AIexander added eight, Andy Moore five and Tom Doherty two to the Viking total. The GDCI Vikings grabbed an eight point lead in their two -game total -point senior basketball finals last Thur- sday, with a 46-38 victory over the Stratford Central Ramblers in Stratford. The Vikings got off to a slow start, trailing 8-0 early n the game and 24-20 at halftime, but, as Viking coach Phil Bugler, said, "we started to put it together in the final half." Playing a consistent, team game, the GDCI squad led 32- 31 by the beginning of the third quarter. Rival coach Ian Garner of the Ramblers of course saw the .game in a somewhat different light, explaining, "we started out playing well, tut just didn't.. finish it off," He felt his team was tired as a result of their tough semi-final victory over cross-town rival Stratford Northwestern last Tuesday and the physical game put up by the Vikings. Garnerwas looking for a better effort from his squad going into the second game of the.series. ' "We hope to be better rested by then." said Garner, Viking coach Bugler was taking nothing for granted going into Tuesday's game, saying, "We are half -way there but despite the past record .and our home -court ani point advantage, Tuesday's game is anyone's game." Greg "Stork" Beacom was a tower of strength for the Vikings, controlling the boards and leading the scoring with 20 points. Iain Lambert and Jeff Baechler added 10 each to the Viking attack. Jon Barz, with four, and Dave MacKenzie with two points, rounded out the Viking total. Ron Hall led Central with 11 and John Tepker added 10. Colts set for game Last year's Ontario Hockey Intermediate 'C' semi- finalists, the Port Elgin Sunocos in.vade Clinton Sunday afternoon to battle the Colts at 3:00 in the second game of the best -of -seven series of the Group Four finals. The powerful Port Elgin squad eliminated the Lucknow Lancers in four straight games to advance to the finals while the -Colts were awarded their series against Kincardine! The Kincardine Bulldogs could not ice enough players for last Thursday night's game in Clinton, forcing the O.H.A. executive to decide on forfeiting the series to the Colts. The Colts were leading God ov er e, e r( the series 2-0 by virtue of an opening game 13-5. victory and a 10-9 win recorded in Kincardine. The Port Elgin series opened last night Wednesday in Port Elgin, but no score was available at press time, The Sunocos are headed by last year's Senior Continental scoring leader, Dean Symons, who this year dominated the scoring race in the Inter- mediate loop by winning the. league by 15 points over Fergus' Garnet Rooney. The Colts will enter the series with two serious in- juries to key players. Paul Kelly has been sidelined .for the year with a leg injury while defenseman Derwin Carter is a doubtful starter with a sprained ankle.
