Goaltender John Page got
hot and the Goderich
Juveniles roared back from a
one game deficit to win their
best of five playoff series with
Byron, three games to two.
The Juveniles managed an
overtime win in Vanastra
Saturday night winning 4-3
and went to Byron Sunday to
clinch the series 8-6 and a
birth in the next round
against Flamboro.
With less than five minutes
left in their post season action
Goderich overcame a one
goal deficit to send the fourth
game of the series into
overtime. Byron had a one
game edge going into
Saturday night's action and
carried a 3-2 lead into the
final five minutes of the game
before Goderich started back.
At 11:20 of the third Steve
Davey finished off a play put
together by Bill Walters and
Paul Schaefer and tied the
game. , In the first overtime
period Davey „ notched his
hattrick and the winning goal
taking a pass from Paul
Schaefer and beating Byron
netminder Terry Foxton at
4:38 of the fourth period.
Byron got on the board first
with just over two minutes
played in the game. Jeff
Zapfe pushed the puck past
John Page on a play set up by

Mike Daly. At the 12 minute
mark Goderich tied the score
for the first time on Steve
Davey's first goal. Defen-

payed a standout game
despite a separated shoulder,
sent Davey on his way. Byron
went ahead three minutes
later on an unassisted goal by
Cam Souter and took a 2-1
lead to the dressing room.

up by Bill Walters and Paul
Schaefer to tie the game and
with 4:38 played in overtime
Schaefer set up Davey again

Despite six goals scored
against him Sunday af-
ternoon in Byron John Page
kept his team in the running
and was - one of the main
reasons Goderich won the
series on n 8-6 decision in the •
final gam. Byron came out
flying in e first period and
with' jus over' a minute
played had run up a 2-0 lead.
With 1:30 played Cam Souter

Merchants close in
on playoff berth
The Goderich Merchants
fought back from a 2-0 deficit
and doubled Thedford 9-2 in
South Huron Hockey League
Intermediate "D" action at
Vanastra. Playing in their
second from last game of the
season the Merchants made
their playoff hopes a little
brighter with the win.
In a fast, clean first period
Thedford jumped to a two
goal lead. Only one penalty, a
two minute minor to Mer-
chant Barry Bloch for in-
terference; marred the
opening 20 minutes. Bloch
went off at 4:20 and although
the Merchants held off the
Thedford powerplay they
couldn't stop the momentum
Thedford had and at 7:41 Bill
Fraser picked off a pass from
Jim Laird and pushed the
puck past Merchant net -
minder Doug Fisher. Tom
Carruthers also assisted on
the play. •
Just over five minutes later
defenseman Pete Thayer fed,
Norm Stewart a lead pass and
Stewart made it 2-0. Mark
Ryan cut the Lead in half in
the final minute of the first
scoring the first of two goals.
Frank Hagan and Paul
Corriveau set up a play Ryan
finished off with 54 seconds
left to go in the first.
The Merchants tied the
game at 8:27 of the second -
period when the same trio
connected on a play.
Corriveau and Hagan set
Ryan up a second time and
the newcomer made it a new
game.
Thedford picked up their
scoring spree and assisted on
the ty :ng effort by Hagan.
John Hoy pumped in the
winner at 11:06 in the third
getting help from Ron..
Whetstone and Jim Hayter.
Merchant netminder Doug
Fisher was named the
Goderich star of the game
and Dave Burch received
identical honors for Thedford.
