The Juveniles managed an overtime win in Vanastra Saturday night winning 4-3 and went to Byron Sunday to clinch the series 8-6 and a birth in the next round against Flamboro. With less than five minutes left in their post season action Goderich overcame a one goal deficit to send the fourth game of the series into overtime. Byron had a one game edge going into Saturday night's action and carried a 3-2 lead into the final five minutes of the game before Goderich started back. At 11:20 of the third Steve Davey finished off a play put together by Bill Walters and Paul Schaefer and tied the game. , In the first overtime period Davey „ notched his hattrick and the winning goal taking a pass from Paul Schaefer and beating Byron netminder Terry Foxton at 4:38 of the fourth period. Byron got on the board first with just over two minutes played in the game. Jeff Zapfe pushed the puck past John Page on a play set up by 977 Mike Daly. At the 12 minute mark Goderich tied the score for the first time on Steve Davey's first goal. Defen- sman Ed Courtney, who payed a standout game despite a separated shoulder, sent Davey on his way. Byron went ahead three minutes later on an unassisted goal by Cam Souter and took a 2-1 lead to the dressing room. Goderich tied the game a second time when Scott Kennedy picked up a pass from Dennis LeBlanc and beat Foxton with 6:03 gone in the middle period. Steve Chase also got an assist on the goal. Byron took the lead again with one second left in the peyiod. Jeff Hesley scored at 14:5.9 of the second with help from Mike Watson and Byron was one period away from winning the playoff round. Steve Davey was the hero of the hour in the third period and first overtime period. Souter put Byron back up with two just over two minutes later and gave his club a 3-1 lead to take to the dressing room after one period. The second period belonged to Goderich and they took over on a powerplay goal by Scott Kennedy. Byron net - minder Dave Hare picked up a two minute delay of game penalty and Kennedy turned it into an unassisted goal with 5:07 played. Mike Cummings set up Mike Andrew less than. Merchants close in on playoff berth The Goderich Merchants fought back from a 2-0 deficit and doubled Thedford 9-2 in South Huron Hockey League Intermediate "D" action at Vanastra. Playing in their second from last game of the season the Merchants made their playoff hopes a little brighter with the win. In a fast, clean first period Thedford jumped to a two goal lead. Only one penalty, a two minute minor to Mer- chant Barry Bloch for in- terference; marred the opening 20 minutes. Bloch went off at 4:20 and although the Merchants held off the Thedford powerplay they couldn't stop the momentum Thedford had and at 7:41 Bill Fraser picked off a pass from Jim Laird and pushed the puck past Merchant net - minder Doug Fisher. Tom Carruthers also assisted on the play. • Just over five minutes later defenseman Pete Thayer fed, Norm Stewart a lead pass and Stewart made it 2-0. Mark Ryan cut the Lead in half in the final minute of the first scoring the first of two goals. Frank Hagan and Paul Corriveau set up a play Ryan finished off with 54 seconds left to go in the first. The Merchants tied the game at 8:27 of the second - period when the same trio connected on a play. Corriveau and Hagan set Ryan up a second time and the newcomer made it a new game. Seventeen seconds into the period John Kuchta scored unassisted and with 6:02 left to play Mike Sharde got his second of the game and tied it all up. Goderich had a two game lead and Friday night lost a home game to Strathroy 7-5 forcing the fourth game to be played in Strathroy. The midgets were having decent success against Strathroy but were stung Friday and forced to hustle for the win Saturday. Tony Bedard came up with a strong performance in goal for Goderich and his forwards and defensemen skated hard and constantly backchecked to protect their own zone. Goderich jumped into a 2-0 lead after a scoreless first period. Hugh,Hanly broke the tie with a goal 2:34 seconds into the second. Steve Arbour set the right winger up for the n n first goal then 34 seconds later grabbed a goal himself. Paul Dougherty got an assist on Arbour's goal. With 14 seconds left to go in the second Rick Nydam broke Bedard's shutout record with an unassisted tally that proved to be his club's only • - "; score. Hugh Hanly got his secohd of the game with help from Paul Dougherty, and then the two switched roles for their club's fourth goal, Dougherty scoring and Hanly getting an assist. Jerry Wunnink grabbed the final goal of the game getting help from•Gary Peters. In Friday night's game Strathroy jumped to a 4-0 lead and never •looked back winning 7-5 to keep their hopes • alive. Mike Reynolds played the first period for Goderich giving up two goals and Tony Bedard took over the final two stanzas giving up an additional five goals. Bob Scott scored twice for Strathroy and Mike Lalich and Ronn'Frank each chipped in one to give their club a 4-0 lead that held until 4:14 of the second period. Mike Larkin put Goderich on the board with a goal assisted by Roger Lewis and Larry Daer but Scott came right back for Strathroy getting the hattrick and pushing the lead back to four goals. Goderich got right back in the game with three -goals in just over a minute and a half" to cut the lead to 5-4. Paul Dougherty started the spree with help from Hugh Hanly and Dale Duncan. Joe Rychel scored an unassisted goal just over a minute later to give Strathroy a two goal edge that held into the third period. Goderich got back to within one on a goal by Steve Arbour. The Electrics are now waiting for the winner of the Hanover - Walkerton series to play for the league championship. The league winners will then play for the, WOAA grand championship. In the 8-1 game the Elec- trics got gal production from all three lines combined with a strong defence paved the way for the victory. Dave Telford and Dave Jewell each scored three goals with Ron Chapan and Darcy McGee meeting singles. Assist went to Scott Garrow with two Dave 'Jewell . 'Kevin Talbot Jeff Scott and Steve Schutz with one each. The Electrics led 2- 0 at the end of the first 4=0 at the end of the second then the locals fired four in the third to ' clinch the win. In the 9-3 game the Elec- tric's had to first battle• the Weather to get to Listowel for the game but this didn't seem to bother their nerves as they 'went out and took a 7-0 lead after two periods. In the third they wandered a little and this cost them three goals. Dave Jewell led the offence with four goals and three assists. Single goals went to Dave Telford, Steve Schutz Kelly Allin, Todd Jeffrey and Kevin Telford. Assists went to Port. EIgin drops Suncoast Atoms The Suncpast Suns Atoms lost their best -of -three semi- final playoff series to Port Elgin, two games to one, when,they were defeated 3-1 in the deciding game at Vanastra Saturday. The game was tight, play- off hockey all the way, with the teams tied 1-1 at the end of two periods. They battled on even terms in the third until, with less than five minutes remaining in the game, Mike Chennette banged in a rebound in a goal -mouth scramble to give Port Elgin the lead. Chennette came back two minutes later with the in- surance marker, his third of the game. He had scored the opening goal of the game midway through the first period, before John Thom- pson replied with the Sun's only goal, near the end of the period. "There were no penalties in the cleanly played, fast -skating contest. Port Elgin now goes on to the league finals against the winner of the Hanover - Walkerton semi-final series. The Suns move into the consolation final series against either Hanover, Walkerton or Listowel. While they are waiting for the . winner of the other consolation semi-final series to emerge, the Suns will be. playing exhibition games.
