(staff photo) ,j; After three games, 6 minutes in .penalties, five game misconducts, two 10 minute misconducts and one match penalty the Goderich Signal -Star Juveniles trail Byron 2-1 in the best of five OMHA playoff series. • Goderich won the series opener in Byron last ,Thur- sday 7-5, and then lost 4.3 in overtime in Vanastra • Saturday and 5-4 in London Sunday. Goderich scored two goals in the final minute of play in the first game in London to break a 5-5 tie and win 7.5 in a game that was marred by fighting and rough play. The rough play resulted in almost 100 minutes in penalties, three game misconducts and a match penalty. Goderich opened the scoring in the first minute of play as Steve Davey scored Steelers edge Strathroy for quarter final playoff berth The Lakeport Steel Ban- tams will be advancing into the quarter finals of the O'MIJA playoffs after dum- ping Strathroy 10-3 and 9-6. The Steelers played at Hockeyland in London on Friday night taking comp -te control of the game defeati Strathroy 10-3. Strathro were shutout in the first period as the Steelers came on strong. Danny Maillet, who played an exceptional game, opened the scoring for Goderich at the 4:51 mark on a breakaway passfrom Larry Madge. Soon after, Rob Trebish made a connection from Mark Rowe for their second goal. Before the period was over, Larry Madge came through with his first goal'of the game assisted by Danny Maillet for a 3-0 lead. early in the second period but the Steelers came back with two quick ones as Danny Maillet scored on a breakaway and Mike Hodges scored from Jim Costello. Before the period ended each team managed one more goal. Goderich scor-d with only five seconds -ft on a three way pl, as John Clement scor d a beauty from Jim Ctello and Steve Waltzers. Strat . oy appeared to give in e final period as they ca through with only one more goal . while Goderich went ahead with four. Danny Maillet scored his third and fourth goals of the game from Larry Madge and' Mike Hodges. Larry scored his secorttd goal from ' Rob Trebish; and Mike Hodges his second also as he let a blistering slapshot go from the point. Stephen Gallow, who played goal that night for the Steelers, came up with some outstanding saves for the 10-3 victory. .On .Saturday night,. Strathroy came to town determined to win and one. might have thought they were going to as Strathroy popped in three quick ones after only four minutes of play. Goderich's first goal came at the 7:46 mark as Danny Maillet and Larry Madge combined on a power play. Two minutes later, John Clement picked up a pass from defencemen Ken Reid and Mark Rowe and made no mistake. Before the end of the period, Strathroy went ahead 4-2. The Steelers came on strong in the second period as Ken Reid came down the ice on a breakaway and just caught the corner of the net to tighten the score 4-3 with less than three minutes remaining in the period, Rob Trebish tied it up as`he received a well set up pass, from Danny Maillet. This was the spark the Steelers needed and with only seconds left Danny scored the go ahead goal from Rob Trebish and Ken Reid. The Steelers had the lead for the first time. The game could have gone either way in the final period as both teams were flying. Rob Trebish scored from Ken Reid after only 19 seconds of play for a 6-4 lead. Strathroy soon scored atain but then so did Goderich as Rob Trebish got his hat trick assisted by Danny Maillet and Larry Madge. Before the game. ended Strathroy had managed one more goal while Goderich went ahead with two. Larry Madge scored from Danny Maillet and Mike Hodges ; and Danny Maillet S received his hat trick with g only seconds left to go from h Larry Madge and Rob 2 Trebish for a final score of 9- 6. m The Lakeport Steel ` Ban- t u on a pass froze BOA 'W"orseln. Byron tied the -.game four, minutes later, only to. have Pete Crew put Goderich ahead on an unassisted effort. Through a'confusing and penalty laden' second period Byron scored three goals, two of them by John Kuchta, . to hold a two -.goal lead going into the final period. Bi11 Walters narrowed the margin three minutes into the third period and then Walters • and Bill Lewis scored in •a 30 second span to give Goderich the lead with four minutes remaining.ti Byron ed the score with two minutes remaining in the game but _ goals by Ed Courtney and Paul Schaefer in the last minute .of play insured the win. Goderich lost a thriller in Vanastra Saturday as Byron was-forted'to tie the game in the third period and then scored in the overtime to edge the Stars 4-3 and :tie the, series. Mike Cummings put Goderich into the lead with an unassisted effort early in the game but John Kuchta tied the .score with one of his two goals just two minutes Iater. Schaefer regained the lead one minute later on a pass from Bill Lewis:, _ Byron fought back to tie the -- game again in the second period and midway through that same period, Tom Sager put Goderich into the lead for the third time. Byron scored the only goal • of the tl~tird period to force the overtime. The teams played seven and a half minutes into the overtime period before Mike Daly scored the winner. In the third game in London unday, Byron scored three oals in the first period and ung on to win 5-4 and grab a -1 lead in the series. Goderich was hampered by anpower disadvantages in he third period and were nable to rally for the tying tams will now advance to the quarter finals where they will,: meet Glanbrook. They will be playing a three out of five series with the first game in Vanastra on Saturday: night at 7 p.m. and then down. to Glanbrook on Sunday at 4! 30`: Good Luck Steelers! Electrics lose to Seaforth, The Graham Electrics were edged 4-3 by Seaforth on Saturday, then came back on Sunday with a 9-2 win over Milverton in novice action. In the Seaforth game, some line juggling seemed to confuse the Electrics which in turn affected their skating and checking. The Electrics had many scoring chances but only Dave Jewell was able to turn the red light on, notching a hat trick. In Milverton, all lines were re -united and everybody seemed more comfortable and it showed with their effort on the ice. The line of Kevin Talbot, Dave Telford and Scott Garrow was hot as Talbot and Garrow notched two each and Telford one. Each of the three also had three assists. The line of Dave Jewell, Todd Jeffrey and Ron Chapman notched three with Jewell doing the hat trick for the second night in a row and Jeffrey and Chapman each picking up assists. Defenceman Steve Schutz had a single goal in the scoring efforts. The line of Kevin Telford, Darcey McGee and Jeff Scott came close a couple of times that could have made the score higher. The forwards were greatly helped in the offensive drives by defen- cemen Schutz, Shawn Larder, Daren Connelly and Kelly Ailin as they broke .up Milverton's drive and head - manned the puck. Goaltender Jay Williamson made two key saves, in the first period to help the Electric's along. Goaltender Shane Worsell who was hot•on Saturday, played in the third period for the Electrics. The midgets won the first two games 4-2and 4-1 and host Strathroy in Vanastra for the third game on Friday night. The series opened in Strathroy and the midgets used two goals in the final five minutes to break a two goal deadlock and win the game. Strathroy opened the scoring midway through the _first when Al Brabendtole the ck and wentin unmolested sli pirug the puck past Go erich netminder Tony Bedard. Just over four. minutes later Steve Arbour set' up Rick ' Rawson and the game was tied. Both clubs. squared off in the middle period and Goderich used a goal in the third to take a, short lead. • At 7:44 of the final period Dale Duncan put one away on a play put together by Paul Dougherty and Hugh Hanly. Twenty seconds later Strathroy tied the game when Barry Donohue set up Mike Lalich. With 5:24 left to go in the game Randy . Stoddard notched the winner with help from Mike Lapaine and Paul Dougherty scored the in- surance goal 30 seconds later. Hugh Hanly got an assist on the final goal. At home in Vanastra Monday night the midgets blew the game open in the third period with three unanswered goals breaking a one goal tie. The teams played tight hockey through the first period and Strathroy drew first blood seven seconds into the second when Rick Nydam unassisted goal on Goderich netminder Gerry Gaynor. Goderich finally beat the Strathroy defense for the equalizer with 20 seconds left in the second period to take a tie into the dressing room. Mike Larkin took John Vandervelden's shutout away at 14:40 when he finished off a play set up by Larry Daer and Roger Lewis. The line scored again early in .the third period when Larkin scored his second after . two minutes of play. Larry Daer and Roger Lewis combined again to set up Larkinand he notched the winner. Daer got credit for one goal with just under nine minutes left and Mike Larkin picked up an. assist. Gary Peters- also helped out on the goal.
