The Goderich Signal-Star, 1977-01-27, Page 4- • , Ith, Memorial. Arena fund raising, goal has finally- been met. It took. close, to seven months, but the money needed to bring. the arena roof UP: i to standards has finally been gathered up. Certainly there are many folks In and around this town who will be heaving a great sigh of relief. Now that it is all over, a few things should be said in retrospet. First of alt, the indiviciu I citizens ot Goderich who dug irito their pockets for _hard, -cold ash during_ the canvass Jest summer should have the commendation of the entire coM- munity. These are the men and Women- - the families - who cared enough for their town to help when the chips were down. Sadly, there weren't too many Goderich and area citizens in this class. A good many chose to keep -their billfolds zippered, offering instead criticism and- cynicism as the cam- paign dragged on. getOndiiie Ng* go to thfikfpAr$ area the Refort#111i Ober* who colors. / kAair.90.Deb 19.PCgi91; er"!14141S 111'funsdt i:4reefear44e•Krilii lin :d In' t1*Ith flying s been quoted as sayingthat cornrnunjty spirit In Goderich Can ,be.Afeasb*Iby the enthuslasmf he terylCe Clubs here. Their assistance 'has been' • recorded by the fund raisers With much gratitude. „ To all whO helped in any way, thank you. It' is because 'or you that the Goderich Memorial Arena will func- tion again soon.- SJK Another look Huron County Council members are still debating about which day to have their meetings. It has been suggested that Fridays are bad days for .urban businessmen elected to county council but when it came to a show of hands at the last meeting, only nine county councillors out of 45 indicated their support for the Thursday meeting „suggested as an alternative to Friday. Thirteen members voted for a Friday session and the rest of council probably was unconcerned. The debate was initiated tate in 1976 when the county administratior Bill Hanly suggested to council he'd heard some comments that Friday meeting dates made service on county council almost impossible. for urban • businessmen, while it has never been established just how many urban -type businessmen are already on county council, it does seem that the majority of the county elected officials are • perfectly satisfied with the Friday sessions. interestingly enough, this newspaper has been pointing out for years that , because of the nature of county • meetings - their time in particular - many, many citizens are prevented from aspiring to county office. The county's habit ,of day -time meetings, immediately hampers working people from serving as a reerib or a deputy - reeve in his or her municipality. One must be Self-employed or retired .to give full attention to county matters. Now it appears that even some of the self-employed residents of Huron are unable to serve because the meetings fall on Friday, heavy business days as everyone knows. That makes selection for county office so much more restricted. Huron is basically an agricultural county, of course, and by far the greatest majority of the membership on county council comes from the townships. While' farming is the. --foremost industry- in - the -countyr-and- - farmers are certainly businessmen in the real sense of the word,. county representatives from the rural areas may not see the need to switch to meeting times which are -more con- dutiveto the person making a living by working eight hours a day, five days a week in an urban setting. With five towns and five villages in Huron- County having a total representation of 15 member there is reason for the county's e ye, committee to take a serious -lc •-riot only the days on which meetings are held, but the hours at which they are conducted: in the interest of the best possible county government, it may be prudent to consider whether the greatest needs of al) the people are being me,t when so many_potential candidatet-for office are swiftly, and' surely cut from the ballot.. because meeting times are unsuitable. SJK Safety first Last week this newspaper carried a story about a Goderich youngster who suffered a broken leg when he darted out from between two snow banks into the path of a car. This week's news has another story, this • time from Dungannon, involving a little girl who was injured when she darted out from between two parked cars into the path of an oncoming vehicle. Drivers at this, time of year are, of course, reminded to be especially Careful on 'the road. Weather con- ----ditions-being-What-ther-arordriiiing becomes' more of art ordeal and stopping quickly becomes more of a challenge; More than this, though, it is par- ticularly important .for parents to caution their children about the dangers of playing or walking in the - snow-covered, slippery streets'. Children should be shown - actually • • given a demonstration of how difficult it is to stop a car in a great hurry to avoid an accident. They should have it explained to them how drivers can be, alert and careful and still unable to prevent a collision if something moves quickly into their path.
