How do you size up oihe
people? Or perhaps, mor
importantly, howare yo
sized up by others?
Are you judged by how
much money you have? By
what you wear? How cleve
or good looking you are?
Yes , I guess we all observe
those things to some degree
when we look another person
over. But when someone is
really sizing you up` he looks
m . ch 'more deeply than just
at the external elements of
`our makeup.
When we are being ap-
praised by someone, he asks
himself, "Can I trust him or
do I detect something
dishonest about him? "is she
sincere or is she shallow?"
"Are the vibes I get from
him genuininely friendly or is
he only feigning interest in
me?"
I recall conversing with a
man a few years ago when a
certain woman's name
came into the conversation.
"I think she must have ice -in
her veins," he commented.
Now, why would he make a
remark like that,? The lady in
question is pretty and
charming, almost like a fine
china figurine. She can carry
on an intelligent conversation
and I'm told she is an exac-
ting hostess, her table always
beautifully appointed and her
house decorated with ex-
pensive good taste.
What, then, made my
friend say she had ice water
running through her veins?
Simply because when you
meet her on the street or at
some gathering or othei,
although she puts on all the
outward appearances of
being friendly, -you're sixth
sense .tells you she really
couldn't care less if you
dropped dead at her feet. She
pretends -interest but it just
✓ doesn'i,come off; the smile on
e her lov,ply face isn't real, it's
u put there for one reason ... to
impress. It doesn't take long
to sizd her up as being shallow
and brittle.
✓ Well, n-iost of us are guilty
of trying to fool people
sometimes and perhaps we
can for awhile but we can't
get away with it forever. Abe
Lincoln said, "You can fool
some of the people all of the
*time. You can fool all of the
people some of the time, but
you can't fool all of the people
all of the time."
Proverbs of the Bible says a
man "is what he thinks" and
what we think shows up in
everything we do. This little
poem says it all.
You tell on yourself by the
friends you seek,
By the very manner in which
you speak,
By the way you employ your
leisure time,
By the use you make of dollar
and dime.
You tell what you are by 'the
things you wear,
By the spirit in which your
burdens bear,
By the kind of things at which
you laugh,
By the records you play on
your phonograph.
You tell what you are by the
way you walk,
`3y the things of which`y"du'
delight to talk,
By the manner in which you
bear defeat,
By so simple a thing as how
you eat.
By the books you choose from
a well-filled shelf ;
In these ways and more, you
tellon yourself ;
So there's really no particle of
sense ,f
In an effort to keep up false
pretense.

"GLORIOUS DELIVERANCE"
In I Thessalonians 1:10, The Apos•
tle Paul, by divine inspiration, as-
sures believers that the Lord Jesus •
Christ has "delivered us from the
wrath to come." He refers , of course,
to deliverance from the penalty of
sin. But in other passages he de-
clares that we are also delivered
from
insow
erof

Co1. 1

13, for eiample, he gives thanks to
God "Who hath delivered us from
the power of darkness and hath
translated as into the kingdom of
His dear Son."
This deliverance, and the glory of
our heavenly position and bleslsings,
we may enjoy experientially now, by
grace. Rom. 6:14 says: "For sin
shall not have dominion over you,
for ye are not under [alb but under
grace-." This does not mean that it
is not possible for the believer in
Christ to sin, but rather that it is
possible in any situation, not to
sin. Thus the same passage in
Romans goes on to say that we
should not yield ourselves as ser-
vants to sin, but to God; who, in
grace has broken sin's power over
His own,
Finally, the believer in Christ
shall be delivered. -even from tits
presence of sin, for -at our Lord's
coming for us "we shall all be
changed" (I Cor. 15;51); Believers
Should long for Christ's coming for
them; not merely because these
bodies of humiliation will then be
glorified, but because from ,that
moment on they shall never again Le
tempted or defiled by sin. What Ia
change that will,bel
The apostle ,includes all three
tenses of the believer's deliverance
in 11 Coe 1:10, where he tells how
God has "delivered us from so great
a death, and doth deliver; in whom
we trust that He will yet deliver."
This is why he could write to the
Philippians about his confidence
"that He who hath begun a good
work in you will complete it until
the day of Jesus Christ" (Phil. 1':6).
Some may not lee/the need of any
deliverance now, but we all need
deliverance from sin and its results.
Why not place your trust in Christ -
who died to "deliver us from the
wrath to come."
