Pierre Trudeau will be eliminateid from lids position in Parliament. • 2. There will be a trip to another planet other than the moon. 3. There. will be no -School next year due to a teachers' strike. 6. Forty percent of the graduate_ students will be married by August 2,1977_ • 7. The drinking age will go up. 8. The seat belt law will terminate. 9. There will be an outbreak of swine flu. The first symptom is an overwhelming sensation to "roll in the mud". - 1.0. Nide and -Dungannon will be joined together to have a city called, "Dunganile". 11..Every swimming pool in Huron County will be in- vaded by frogs. 12. World War III will commence on the Square between the Daring Dogs and the Cowardly Cats. 13. Sonny and Cher will reunite. 14. A new monster will be created called, "Big Mouth". BRAD HAMILTON BRIAN HOWES We predict that Quebec is going to remain part of Canada next year and the remaining years to come. The Montreal Canadiens will v1 r the 1976-1977 Stanley Cup play-off finals in five games. The sale .of razor blades will decrease in the .town of Goderich next year due to the amount of new beards in town. The intelligence of grade 12 students in G.D.C.I. will decline next year. However the intelligence' level of grade 13 students will increase. , We predict that these predictions are all wrong. -- • KAREN POND DONNA FRAYNE Our predictions for Goderich in the corning year in - elude the following: - the population will continue to increase and more in- dustries will locate in Goderich. - the failure to complete the town's arena. - that a mass project will commence to make the town square-asquare, - that if there is no increase in harbour facilities or im- provement there will be no business of interest. Our predictions for other surrounding areas such as Kingsbridge include -the continued success of the newly established Sullivan's restaurant, and the Dalton Dollies" will revenge themselves in the next baseball s season. Scientific discoveries of the next year include an anecdote-fe4Hi-Karate,and a major break through in the prevention of split -ends. There will many solutions to many problems but many more will arise. ELEANOR McMILLAN SHELLEY HILL Within the 1977 various:changes may occur in in- ternational affairs: Our predictions are: ' 1. There will be an iinsiiccessful assassination attemptpn Jimmy Carter's life. 2. The province of Quebec will not separate from anada. 3. The crime rate in Canada will "substantially crease because of a rise in unemployment. 4. There will be a great deal of strife in Africa. 5. There will be a Federal Election in Canada. The Liberals will again form the government but it will be a minority government.. 6. There will be more majorearthquakes likely in Italy, Turkey and Russia. 7. Relations will be strained between Canada and U.S. because of trade disagreements. • (beef, oil, electric, power) 8. Swine flu will not reach epidemic proportions. 9. Arab-Israeli relations will improve in 1977. PAUL O'BRIEN In 1977 a federalist movement will start in Quebec and Rene Levesque will leave politics and buy a tobacco farm in Ontario. CHERYLE RIVETT MANE HUFF Trudeau who is pre eptly ;,deciding the future of Canada may not be in that position for long. I would say Trudeau is more concerned with the french Canadians more than the english speaking Canadians. In the next election we predict that Trudeau will not be elected again, but will be put out of parliment, by most english speaking Canadians. If by chance he is re-elected it may be only the french votes that are counting. We also predict that Trudeau may be slain by someone from the english or french citizens if the conditions do not get better for Canada.., J Quebec may separate itself from Canada and Quebec may become more independent from us. This may happen if Trudeau is allowed to stay in parliment. COLLEEN SPENCE SOAN BENNETT LAURIE BOYCE At Christmas 1977, there will be a devastating storm and power failure and the whole area will be stranded without food, heat or light. And worst of all Santa Claus will miss Goderich because of the black out. After sur- viving this storm the thaw will bring even more turmoil. As the snow melts, it will create raging currents which will carry the homes at the edge of the bank aver the edge and down the drain. We also predict that the areana will not be ready in time for the jubilee festivities and afterwards Goderich will be a welfare case. Lastly a .big rumour about a radiation leak at Douglas Point and panic will strike Goderich, 3 DOUG McCEINCHEY In 1977 the -Ontario marketing board will change to a set price for'all of the- farmers produce. This will include; Milk, Meat, Crops, Eggs etc. A raise will occur now -and then just like an office workers job. Everyone that wants to get ahead'willuse, and learn the•metric system. Both of these will eliminate all of the Conflicts on the market square. , The prices of all farm machinery will stay stable to the 1976.prices and the farmers will be able-toincrease their crop accuracy. The same will happen with all of the top:: brand cars and trucks. The new methane gas engine will be designed fully to work in allself propelled vehicles. All in all 1977 will be a farmers year and a'year for the; prettiest town in Canada -which will be150 years old. This has been my idea of a cheeper more profitable year for everyone in Canada and surrounding chuntries. B DENNIS WHITE -Who cares about next year. There seems to be mountains of problems coming next year energy shor- tages, earthquakes, wars and increasing starvation. My predictions for the new year are that I don't care. It seems I'm constantly told of these problems but since I have enough of my own I .won't start saving the world until I save myself. .. _- Why don't more people straighten out themselves their. childrenand own problems before they start coming on to me to help them with worldcrisis. Why don't they help -their children and themselves and when thats done, and, I've straightened myself out I'll help too. ti. • But it seems this philosophy doesn't work there's to many Joan of Archs' and. Napoleons. If people would stop playing hero roles and be a hero at home it would greatly increase our well beinand the well being ofthe world. JUDY CRUICKSHANK I believe that the town council will overcome the financial problems of our arena and will make further progress on the issue of the recreation complex if they can stop fighting long enough to get on speaking terms with each other. Although this will take a lot of sacrifice on each member's part, I'm sure that they will be able to do it. DEBBIE SCHULTZ s I predict in 1977 that the energy- crisis will increase. The foolishness of the people this year has caused the gas and oil todecrease in supply. This' means that we will cut down fifty per cent in all the electricity we Use. The lighted billboards on which we advertise on, will have to be either shut off much earlier or not lighted -up at all. -To save our electrical energy we must all cut back! Also during the next year Canada will try to bring their athletes.up to standards, were they will be good com- petition. So, duringall this "building up" 'Period of our athletes, other people as well will become involved in. "participation". This will cause us,not to be ,so out -of - shape. PAUL NORS ;a. ri 1 predict the driyers age will iar; ,a Se, tpr.18 yea'rs,,e,, .. -I predict the drinking age will bkra0ed to 21 yeast:µ I predict:- that President Jimmp .carter will bring lige' factors to the USA which will stop. unemployment. I predict that Ontario's farm produce will be raised to.a higher percentage. « I predict that Cuba is going to have a greater amount of hyjackers. 1 predict that Toronto Maple Leafs will win the NHL's Stanley Cup. - " I predict that the price of gasoline will decrease in price ih the companies. I' predict that their is going ta be a gun law passed to take over the amount of guns which arn't registered in Canada. I predict that the Premier of QUebec Rene Levesque will be asasinated. _ Goderich is goingto have a big -hydro plant made in it. MARY TODD I predict that Quebec will not separate because the province can not support itself. The French-Canadians did not realize that the votes would.bso high and they are not prepared to separate. Quebec is too depended on the Canadian government. . I feel that the world's population will increase but not •as much as usual because people are realizing that the world is too populated and too many children are being born and put up for adoption. Something is going to happen that will cut down the population maybe a war or a disease will wipe out some of the people. It is not very pleasent but something must be doneIt seems that quite a few people have been sick this fall with colds or flus, and some big epidemic will kill off some people. The way the world's disagreeing we may have a war, 8 - BERNIE VAN OSCH Interfial strife willstill trouble Canada in'77.The new govt in Quebec will try with allmeasures possible to separate from Canada over a certain issue. But total separation from Canada will not take place because the people of Quebec will not follow what their leaders have proposed. The trouble -maker who caused most of the trouble between Canada and Quebec will step down from office. Pierre Trudeau will resign from office and Mr. Clark will become the new Prime Minister. After these two problems are solved, foreign investment in Canada will again increase but the Canadian dollar will notbe. higher in value than the U:S. dollar. Premier Davis will propose a . bill in -Parliament and the gov't will be defeated, leading to an election8and new leader. More. moneyywillbe spent on development of natural resources and many 'newcommercial uels will be found or developed. g investment, will lead to ed, This, along with for ggnn to an increased standard of livingin Canada. The govt of Ontario will follow the lead of the U.S. and Quebec, in allowing thepurchase of alcoholic beverages and beer to be sold in independent stores. This will lead to less government, involvement in the retail industry. The L.C.B.O. will be obliterated and small business will again be on the par with the large supermarket. By Shirley'. Keller And a very happy new year to all of -you, too. Thankfully, the first few days of ✓actuary have been considerably better, weather wise, ---than. the last month or so of the old year. Maybe we can really look forward to bigger and-- better things dtirin n 1977.,Let's hope so. Gc ..;erich Town Council got off n a fine start Monday evening. Unfortunately, ndt many citizens bothered to get down to the town hall to wish their elected officials a successful': term of office. Only:, about 'a half-dozen persons not connected with elected members were in attendance, including former mayor Harry.Worsell;and two members of last: year's council Jim Peters and Leroy Harrison. Actually, it was a rather impressive •occasion. ; The council table was centred_ with a_ bouquet -of red - an white carnations (coin- . pliments of Mr. and Mrs. Beth Haydon). The press table was even decked oht with ' an arrangement of yellow roses, this writer's favorite flowers (also corn- - pliments of the Haydons). • 'c DEAR irta:ADERS Many of the ladies were attired in full-length gowns, for councillors and their spouses :.were laterguests of. the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch I09,for an evening of relaxation and enjoyment. Harold Walls, the town's administrator, administered •the oath of office to Mayor "Deb Shewfelt who in turn administered . the oath - of office to council members. This .being a Christian. country, each council , member took...the oath while touching a copy of the Holy` Bible. Following this, the mayor went around the table, signing/ each member's paper and personally welcoming each one to the council table. The Rev. Robert Crocker of St. George's Anglican Church suitably doted this was a rather -historic/ occasion, ince this council was being orn in during the town's squ"lcentennial. ' Mr Crocker, although new to Goderich, was,,, able to tie himself into the history of the town by saying that a former rector of St. George's from _ 1911 to 1917, the Rev. J. B. Fotheringhadi, hadalso been one of his professors at Trinity College in Toronto when he was studying for the ministry. alluded to the fact that even in this, one could see God's marvellous direction. He spoke about his"calling" by God to Goderich •in this particular time ' and ' then proceeded to say that he trusted that each and every member .of Goderich Town Council had been _ called, perhaps even by God, to his or her role at this particular time. Mr. Crocker urged council to seek God's guidance during the coming term and he told. them: "God is well able to redeem where council goes astray:" It was truly a thought- provoking moment, for councillors as well as for, anyone else who heard ,theI brief remarks of Mr. Crocker. Traditionally of " course, councils are .officially =inaugurated by a minister frpm the community. Always, council members and guests bow in quiet.' reverence as the pastorleads in prayer and speaks his words of wisdom. And then, as the inaugural meeting closes and council members get down to the 4ht .obtr•ftb SIGNAL -STAR -0 The Couhlr Town Newspaper of Huron -0- 1 Founded' in Ina and published every' Thursday at God erch i h CWN and OWNA. Apparently Mr. Crocker hasa good understanding of human weaknesses and human failures. He, may even know full well that these weaknesses and failures carry right over into the performances of elected officials, as one would expect theywoult1` But how many times do council members Yes, even citizens of a com- munity....really call.on God to guide the affairs - of their municipality as is so often agreed upon at inaugural meetings?
