'The Huron Historic Gaol
opens its doors to a third
season of visitors on May 22.
Visitors will be greeted by a
number of extensive changes
and additions to the facility:
• Raring, the winter months a
variety of projects aimed at
the eventual restoration of
the building have :been un-
dertaken. Foremost among
these is the major refur-
bishing of the Governor's
.House. •
Pave McMillan of Goderich
received the Canadian
Command Award from the
Royal Canadian Legion in
recognition of 50 years of
service with the legion. The
• presentation was made at an
inter -club gathering last
Thursday.
A resident of Meneset Park
claims that constantly low-
flying aircraft are causing
undue and undesirable noise
in ;the .park area. A letter, to
the Goderich Airport Com-
mittee said • that many
families of the area are an-
noyed with the noise of planes
that Jly in a never-ending
path over the park. •
Twelve' residents of Sun-
coast•Drive in Goderich have
petitioned town.. council to
"proceed Without delay" in,.
curbing and paving Suncoast
Drive.
Although the ratepayers
from that part of town
recognize the • "funding
restraints" faced by council,
they feel that since the .
project was planned for 1975
and later ' rescheduled for i
1976, it should go ahead this
year.
The Goderich Area Plan-
ning Board adopted ' a new
format for processing sub-
division plans, amendments ,
to the official plans and
changes in zoning bylaws than
should speed up the process
considerably. At the'' . same.
time it should make effective -
deci•sionsby the board easier.
The 'format; prepared by
county; planner Gary
Davidson, requires
developers submitting
requests to the planning ' b•
board toe more thorough in
their presentation and
'requires planning board
members to acquaint
themselves with the request
prior to the meeting. •
• MAY 27
Th matter of raiducing
count, -council inembers was
- discussed only briefly at their
last meeting. The entire
discussion was tabled until
the June meeting when it is
hoped a full council may be
prepared to debate the issue
from every angle. But that
'session should show a wide
variety of viewpoints, judging
from the smattering of
'comments voiced this month.

I think the current ban on smoking in many places is #prig.
overdue, and l'm all for it but I don't thiftk•it's gone far enough.
Why isn't a law passed which prohibits the sale of cigarettes to
children? .
It makes my blood boil every el ewitness such a sale being
made to. youngsters, and I thin that it's high time that
thoughtless and greedy storekeepers should be punished.
Such a law does exist, and the stores you mention are breaking
this law, if, allis, as you say!
Under Ontario's Minor's Protection Act, it is an offence to
furnish "cigarettes, cigars or tobacco in any form" to children
under 18 years of age. A person doing so is liable to a °fine cf
between $2.00 and $50,00 upon conviction.
Howevetr it is NOT considered an offence if.the child presents
the store keeper with a written note or order from his (or her)
parent or guardian requesting the purchase of "tobacco in any
form.'.'"

An- advertisement was published in a newspaper, (NOT
OURS) a few:weeks ago, advertising six foot sofas for $38.50: We
phoned the store that ran the ad, and they said that it was a
misprint on the part of the newspaper, and that it, (the ad)
should have read $338.50. •
Could we have made this firm sell us the sofa for 538.50 if we
had insisted?
NO WAY! In the law of contracts, an advertisement such as
this is not an offer which you can accept to form a contract...
Rather itis termed an "invitation to treat." A valid contract
would not be formed unless the merchant offered you the sofa at
$38.50 with the intent to form a contract of sale.
Generally, in a retail situation, the obligation to sell at a
-certain price is only arrived at in the store when the sales slip or
order is made out and signed by the customer.
