Dear• Readers....

home in Goderich to another
one and all the week
before Christmas. The
movers have strict
structions not to lose the
roasting pan. Were going to
have that Christmas turkey
no matter what. -
As I write this on Friday,
December 17 I am in a
complete state of confusion.
With the, Christmas issue
coming out a day early, the
hdusehold in a state of
upheaval, the new house not
quite reacry for occupancy, no
Christmas shopping done, not
a scrap of Christmas paling
completed .,.. a brand new
junior choir under my
direction (well sort of)
making its debut Christmas
Eve plus, all the. general
excitement of Christmas -Ito
boot, I'm a nervous wreck.
But it will probably come
together and go down in my
memoirs as one of the hap--
piest Christmases ever.
Son Randy is arriving home
from school today. That's
always a treat. He will
complete the family circle at
our house and that's the best
Christmas gift I can get.
The family is all getting ,
together in Dashwood again
this year on Boxing Day.
That's always the highlight of

the season for the clan.
During the year, the family
grew a little more and I'm
told that this year's
celebration will also include
several • aunts and; uncles
from the Zurich and New
Hamburg area who want to
join the festivities. Looks like
it will be more than a dinner.
It will be a reunion!
- As Christmas Eve gets
closer, I'm looking forward to
the peace and quiet of the
night. Have you ever noticed
how quiet Christmas Eve gets
out on the streets? I suppose
that's because everyone is at
home with their loved ones.
We'll go to church
Christmas Eve, of- course.
Dear Editor..r.

our townspeople and all
thought it.to be a good idea:
I have mentioned it • to
representatives of our Town's
governing body, to members
of our service clubs and also
to members of our Downtown
Merchants' Association. The
more,' "dream" about it, the
more I think it would be
useful, unique and , an at-
traction that no other small
town has or could have in a
similar setting.• •
Goderich is unique with its
downtown shopping area•
looking. out onto a park used
only in the summertime.
My "pipe" dream is that
some day we would have an
artificial ice surface in the
courthouse park for those
who like to skate and for those
who like to watch skaters,
from tiny tots to senior
citizens. The ice. surface
could be . used for . skating
around the clock with taped
.music from speakers t at
strategic locations in . the
trees, acouple of small
glassed shelters similar to the
bus waiting stations in the
cities, for changing skates.
It is not my idea .that this
ice surface would be a fixed
affair that would mar the •
beauty of. our •park in the
summertime but would be
portable, putup in the fall and
removed in the spring. The,
ice -making machinery could
be housed in a small, low
profile portable building. and
the balance. of equipment
• required to prepare the ice
.surface would be in mats
Which house the pipes and
a pattern through the trees to
allow the skaters to skate in
an endless circuit. The ice
surface does not have to be
rectangular in shape.
No doubt, you and 'many of
your readers have seen
people of all ages at any time
of the day or Right skating on
an artificial ice Surface which

Nathan Phillips v- &pare.,
Toronto. Also the portable ice
surface in front of the ban-
dstand in Victoria Park,
London.
I think we as citizens of the
town, our neighbours in the.
townships and surrounding
towns and villages would
make good use of it. The ice
surface could be a real at -

Dear Santa
But as I come out of the
service, I expect to be thrilled
again by the silence of the
world around me. That's the
way it always seems to be.
That trip home is always such
a tremendous experience.
I pass the homes on the
way, most of them lit up .in-
dicating folks are ht- home. I
traction which we could all be
proud of.
I have not inquired as to the
cost of such an undertaking
blit am sure that with con-
tributions from citizens,
merchants, service clubs,
corporations, etc., that we
could cover the cost. Theme
original outlay for the
equipment is the big thing,
the maintenance . could be
covered by our tax dollar'.
I have written this letter in
the hopes that you would
• publish it and provoke some
• action or reaction from other
• citizens.
Sincerely,.,"

think about the joy inside
those homes .„... the love, the
warmth, the laughter. I think
what a miracle it is that
Christmas does this for a
busy world — that Christmas
makes people stop their dizzy
whirl of activity and be
family units once again, even
for a short while.
And then I think of that first
Christmas family - Mary and.
Joseph and the Baby Jesus. I
think what a glorious plan
God had for. His People ....
and how that plan has af-
fected the world all down
through the ages.
-I think 9f those heavenly
hosts who sang "Peace on
Earth Goodwill To Ail Men"
on that quiet hillside on that
first Christmas and I am
awed • that even today,
Christmas Eve 'still has. that
spontaneous stillness about it.
'And then I think •of.my own
family and -the blessing.of it. I
think what a lucky woman I
am to have a husband who
,cares, three kids who have
grown to love and appreciate
their family and a place to
call home.
But most of all, I'm grateful
to the God who loved me.
enough to send His Son into
the- world to become the
perfect sacrifice for my sins:
I give thanks for the free gift
of eternal life which is made
possible through the birth of
this little baby so many years
ago on an evening much like
this one and I go into my
house filled with the lasting
peace of Christmas.
May you and yours know
this same peacefulnest this
Christmas and all your lives
through. •

CHRISTMAS GIFT STORY
At Rawsons Shop for Men, we do everything we can to keep Christmas
shopping part of the Christmas fun.
Our people will help you select a perfect gift for everyone on your list.
Because they realize how important it is to find exactly the right thing
you care about.
And we can suggest hundreds of things. For instance a terrific new
shirt from our collection of patterns, prints and stripes. A superbly
tailored suit. Or trousers. Or the velvet look by Pierre Cardin and
Christian Dior in lounge wear, dressing gowns. Striped pullovers.
Plain pullovers. Striped sweaters. Rawsons has everything a man
wears,
Remember, too, anything you select may be exchanged. In minutes. So if
Uncle Harry gets five sweaters or half a dozen belts, we'll be happy to
give him a little variety in his wardrobe.
The service we're famous for all year 'round is even more in evidence at
Christmas time. So come shop for men's gifts in the one store with
everything. Including a little of that old-fashioned Christmas feeling.
